I'm trying to decide on a sub. So many darn choices in life!
My modest system includes:
Onkyo 6.1TX502
4 R30's
CS200
I also have some R15's i could use one as a back speaker.
Was thinking of Polks 303 or 404 but they are a little pricey and more than i paid for all of the above? I listen to music mostly yet the "music" subs appear to be for high end systems.
I have a small apt. right now, my listening area is aprox. 18' x 14' w/ an attached kitchen area aprox. 18' x 8'.
I don't want to under spend and be disappointed at the end of the day. I plan to keep this system for a year or so before i upgrade. Though the rti4's or 6's sure look nice.
Your advice is appreciated.

Decided to keep things affordable... going with a Dayton Sub-120 for now.
Let you know how it goes... while the HSU, LM1 and 2 were very tempting I'll wait for my upgrade to 7.1 with seperates.
Thanks again for your recommendations..

I think this is the new dayton right? Their old ones are discontinued.
These have a slightly different look. I think most of the specs are the same. Let me know how it goes...my brother is possiably in the market for that sub in a few months

Trying to decide on my next sub. I now have a 12" downward firing that is powered with a 200 watt amp. Its lifeless!
Considering either a PSW12, or a PSW 505.
My sys is on the old side with a pair of RTA 11Tl's, powered by a Yamaha RX-1100U. -
I'll definitely let you all know what i think, though i'm green in the world of audio. I decided to order two as they were inexpenseive at partsexpress.com and a buddy of mine is interested should i decide not to stack them.
Not sure if they are the 'new' versions or not. 120.00 p/sub. including shipping. Parts express changed the availability date from 1/5 to 1/12 after i input my order. If their b/o runs too long i may cancel and find something else.

My two dayton120 subs should arrive monday sometime... having difficulty finding their main website.
I don't know what type of inputs are on the back and would like to pu: the cables this w/e if possilbe. Anyone know their site so i could look at the back of the unit?
My Onkyo 502 has an lfe output that i could fit w/ a "Y" connector then run the cable to the subs. Do you use two wires per sub or just one.
Then all this stuff about crossovers in the sub, my receiver, etc... hope the manual is good..
Any input is greatly appreciated.
T"There's a lot of places driving up and down I-95 that smell like ****" F1Nut -
using a y will give you +3 db of gain i believe.
partsexpress.com for the dayton?
site of what? Onkyo?
the dayton should have a LFE input. I'm 99% sure of it.
I would run one single RCA then split it, instead of fitting a y connecter to the onkyo then the 2 sub cables then the sub. I would just run a sub cable to a female to 2 male rca y cable and plug that into the back of your sub. That should save you some wires.

Got sub 120 yesterday, haven't had time to really test it yet.
Hookups on rear are line level in and out (RCA), use right input for single RCA connection, and High level in/out (spring clips).
There is a thread on this unit at AVS forum:

SChris22- thx. for the input on running the wire, yes i picked up two 120's at P.E., i was looking for a site that would show a picture of the back of the sub so i knew what i was dealing with. Does p.e. make the dayton?
//
bigc, welcome! No dig cam at this time.. though will post/forward when possible.
//
brijenjas, thx. for the info. and the link on the thread, let us know what you think once you have your sub up and running...

Any suggestions on which SPL meter to purchase? I know i need one though still to green to say i've ever used one! I'm pretty tight on the budget and my rig is definitely entry level.. just don't wan't to underspend for something which does not measure accurately enough.
//
Wing, just saw your "obsession"... sweeeeet!
Thx. again,

I'm not sure...I'm pretty sure they do though. Either that or a partnership.
They sell dayton titanic kits/subs as well as a lot of their other products
buy an analog SPLmeter from radioshack should be 30-40 bucks

Starchaser.
Got an SPL meter today, set all the speakers & the Dayton sub-120 with my DVE disk.
For the $120.00 I paid for this, I am completely satisfied.
I had my doubts about this unit at first when I tried setting it by ear, seemed to lack volume and sound muddy. After settiing it up with DVE and a meter, it does not lack volume, I threw in my I Robots DVD,had to turn down the sub volume.
It will shake the house.
Doing frequency sweep with DVE started to hear sound at about 25-27hz, so this goes pretty low for a $120.00 sub.
As for music, I don't have a much that has a lot of low bass.I mostly listen to music in two channel. I played Santa Abraxas and the bass guitar sounded pretty good, nice and tight.
All in all, a nice upgrade from my old BIC V-8 60watt. -
glad to hear your set up brijenjas!
i took a late lunch and jetted over to my house to see if my subs arrived... nope... not yet.
had to work till almost 8 and was anxious to see two big boxes on my porch! all i had was a little piece of paper from ups indicating "signature required"... 2nd. attempt after 5pm tomorrow... yet... sounds like a good reason to get out of the office EARLY!!!
the way this week started i may not have cables/time to set up until the w/e.
what kind of spl did u go with and from whom?"There's a lot of places driving up and down I-95 that smell like ****" F1Nut -
if the ups distribution office is nearby, then you can pick it up after the 3rd try
or they send it back i forget =P
don't worry you'll get it soon!

Poor girl didn't have a clue what I was talking about when I asked her for the meter(she just started there last week) so I just handed her the printout I got from there website. She couldn't thank me enough, wouldn't give me a discount though. lol.:o -

6.1 alas my friends...! Truly had no idea what i was missing.
I'm awed, i'm feeling it... i'm happy!
lotr is making my apt. tremble.
Ran one wire from each of my dayton 120's (red low level input) to a y splitter into my lfe output on my receiver.
Does it make a difference if i connect to the red or white low level input?
I don't have a preout on my Onk 502, yet seems to working quite well as i indicated. Instructions are not clear to me, maybe a call to p/e would help.
Any suggestions?
Also, when using an spl meter (picked up an analog at rack shack) i really had to turn up the gain on the subs to get the readings any where near the same. Just didn't seem right so i backed them off a bit.
Have to tweak speaker placemnt a bit and clean up my wires. What a mess! receiver on the floor wires everywhere... but i have nice lazy boz right in the middle of it all...!
Any advice on the above appreciated.
T"There's a lot of places driving up and down I-95 that smell like ****" F1Nut -
Glad to hear you are enjoying your new subs.
The instructions do say to connect a single line level input to the red input, so you are ok there.
What did you use to generate a tone for yor SPL readings?
As for calling PE for advice, I haven't talked to them myself, but from what I've read their support is good . -
I don't have a test tone cd so i just used the speaker calibration setup on my receiver and used my spl on that... was surprised my ears were off that much. working on finalizing my shelving and wiring this w/e.
i'm looking forward to spring, i figure i can use the super junk wire i bought initially..." becasue it was good enough for now..." to hold up my tomato plants
Today is Mozart's b-day.. 250 years and still going.... not bad! Listening to the live mozart concert now, wish i could record it.
