upgrade?
I am debating whether to upgrade my surrounds (7.1 system) or replace my entire system. I have vintage polk all around except for sub. L/R are LS50's, Center is a CS350 and I have MIII for sides and rears. Sub is a Klipsch SW10II.
I am wondering if I were to upgrade just the surrounds, what would be a timber match to the Mains?
I have a new Denon 4806 and the room is about 20x20 with vaulted cielings (albeit low vaulted 8-13 feet). Will this system be enough to fill this room? I suspect the sub may need to be either replaced or supplemented with a second one.
This is used primarily for home theater with maybe 15% music.
Thanks,
Ron

If you like the sound of your speakers, just buy a separate 7 channel amp & plug all the speakers in to it!
You will then have plenty of power to fill your room.

Thanks for the reply. It wasn't very clear in my orig post, but my M3II surrounds(not MIII - sorry) seem to be the weak point. I am wondering if there is a timber matched surround in the current Polk line that I could use with my R/C/L?
Would the FXi5 match? would they be appropriate for the LS50's?
Would the FXi3's be a better match?
I could fit either.
Thanks

The best matches would be vintage surrounds with the trilaminate tweeter:
LS f/x
RT f/x
FX500i's are a little newer and also have a similar trilaminate tweeter. I'm using these with my LS90s and they match well.
All of these pop up on eBay every once in a while.
Anything newer than the FX500i's do not have the trilaminate tweeter and are moving farther away from an ideal match.
However, many feel (self included) that getting an exact tonal match for the surrounds is not as critical as for the front channels, so the FXi3's or 5's will work fine if you can't find the older models. Both of those will probably match better than your current surrounds.5.1 and 2.0 ch Basement Media Room: Outlaw 975/Emotiva DC-1/Rotel RB-1582 MKII/Rotel RB-1552/Audiosource Amp 3/Polk LS90, CS400i, FX500i/Outlaw X-12, LFM-1/JVD DLA-HD250/Da-Lite 100" HCCV/Sony ES BDP/Sonos Connect. You have an excellent receiver, why not go with a full new rti series home theater package? Replacing the rears you could do and probably improve over the damn M3's.I never really liked them fro rears anyway.
The new rti series polks are nice and would make for a ery nice replacement speaker package.
Good luck.

Adam and Dan,
thanks for that info. I was afraid that the newer surrounds would not be timber matched, not that the M3's were very close anyway. I'll see what I can find on ebay and other used equip sites.
How are the rti's compared to the LS series? I haven't heard them. I was trying to avoid getting into a new set of speakers because I don't have much spare time to audition them.
May do that in any case.
Many thanks for your input,
Ron
