Good Bye MNF, it's been great!

Sure MNF will be back next year on ESPN and I'll finally be able to see it in HD, but part of me will miss the tradition. 36 years of football on Monday nights on one channel is not something that is not easily dismissed or forgotten. So I'll say a fond farewell to the folks at ABC by recalling my fondest MNF memory and invite you all to do the same.

I remember watching Steve Atwater (Denver Broncos) not only stop Christian Okoye (KC Chiefs) at the line of scrimage, but actually knocked him 2-3 yards backwards after Okoye got up to full speed as he burst through the offensive line. The great thing about the play was that Atwater had been "Miked" before the start of the game and the replay with the sound of the hit was one of the most impressive sight/sound combinations I've ever seen or heard.

The fact that I'm a Broncos fan really has nothing to do with it, it was all about the hit. A good clean hit between two incredible players.

I too am sad to see MNF go to ESPN. Like you said, after so long its kind of tradition now.

Same with NASCAR. It was the Winston Cup for decades now its the Nextel Cup??

The game is still the same, who cares. Same game, same time, different channel. Whooptie do.

The only thing that mildly annoys me about it, is the fact that the old timers, less fortunate, etc with the rabbit ears and/or directional antennae can't just pull the game in for free anymore from their local ABC affilliate.

    Cheers,

I dont think theyre perfect but I kinda like the "Chase". Its like having a playoff or post season in NASCAR.

I think they should award more points for winning though.

    s

Sunday night football is moving to NBC next year, so a national game will still be on a local affiliate.

Agreed on the rest. Honestly I hate ABCs football coverage. Waaaaaay too much fluff, not enough effing football. Madden and Michaels talk about EVERYTHING but football for half the game. They seem to forget there's even a game on sometimes.

The saddest thing about next year's changes is that it means the end of "NFL Primetime" with Chris Berman and Tom Jackson. Ths show has been on the air since 1987, and has always been a good wrap-up of the day's games and a lead-in to the Sunday Night game.

Due to the lame-assed new contract put together by the NFL, NBC now has the sole rights to show football highlights up to midnight on Sunday nights.

Bob Costas doing football highlights. Lovely.

My biggest **** about MNF is there are more comercials than there is football!!!

My God man! Do they really need a comercial between every play?

+1... Could Costas make up, "Proel shampoos his way into the endzone?", I don't think so...

Second biggest shame is ESPN dropping Paul MacGuire from the broadcasts. Not only is the guy funny, but he keeps Theisman in line and that takes some doing.

What else, but in the 4th quarter of an Oiler blowout (as in getting blown out), the lone fan, slumped in an Astrodome seat giving the one-fingered salute to the camera and Dandy Don deadpanning, "We're #1".

    Close Second...
Alex Karras on "Otis Sistrunk, University of Mars."

MNF is one of those cultural phenom's like SNL. While neither has been great in a good while, both retain some importance if only because of what they once were.

I was not fortunate enough to attend the first MNF game in Cleveland (Jets at Browns), but did attend the night the '72 Dolphins came to town... and beat the Browns of course. A great time despite the loss. If you've never seen a MNF game live, they are very special.
    More later,

Haha, Berman's name play cracks me up every time.

I gotta disagree with you about Paul MacGuire though. That Sunday night team is just TORTURE to listen to. They're like a bunch of old hens, bickering with each other.

The most I can say is at least they tend to stick to the topic of football.

Sure they do Brett. Actually you'd make a good 'tight end'.
