Good news. I decided to build an infinite baffle sub in the basement of my townhouse (shhh!) and am working on it right now. I'm taking pictures and hope it will be done by Friday. I'm taking nearfield and farfield measurements as well, and will post all those before and after EQ.

    Be prepared! :D
Maz, if you don't mind, can I take a listen sometime? :D

I picked up a used REL Strata I which blends in very well. I cannot tell where the bass is coming from. As for HT, it's enough for me. The windows can rattle upstairs, which I do not want, if I crank the volume

Definately. One problem I'm having, and you may remember from when you came over to see the X1, is the tennants before us finished half the basement and did a pretty piss poor job. It's taking me forever to figure out the best way to install this thing without making it look like crap. If this were my own house, I'd probably devote 5x more time to this IB, making sure it was absolutely perfect. Since this is only temporary, maybe a half-assed job is in order :D

I don't know. I guess it blends well due to many control options so you don't hear the crossover between the mains and sub, it doesn't turn acoustic bass into electric bass, it isn't "one note" bass and doesn't detract from the soundstage? At least that is the stuff I'm thinking of.

Infinite Baffle is THE BEST SQ you can get, PERIOD. It takes the box colorations out of the picture, which you're saying, make subs sound better.................Do yourself a favor and check out this site. Also check out the "Direct links to our reference pages" that shows up at the top of the site. You will need to register before being able to view:

Thanks for the link Mazeroth! I think you MAY have solved my sub issues.

I am very interested to see pics of yours. Also have you ever heard an IB that was not on the front wall behind the mains. In my room I would only be able to put it to my side vented into a large utility room. Just curious if you think this would seriously harm SQ.

Thanks Again, and good luck with the build.

Cool, thanks! Good luck with the install, wish I could do one myself...

Sorry for the derail madmax, but I've got to agree with Maz, from what I've read NOTHING competes with an IB in the bass departement. The only thing that might be as "musical" is a dipole sub. At least that's what I've been told.

One way I could describe it is that you just cant tell it's there. Before with all my previous subs you could notice it was there, they just all sounded to boomy. I can be playing something in 2ch & switch my IB on with almost no change in the soundstage other than a much more noticable amount of depth & clarty. Any other sub I've had or heard makes itself noticeable in some way or another.
Everyone always says bass is non directional, but so far almost every boxed sub I've ever heard I could point out in a room without a problem, My IB OTOH I couldent come close to telling you where the manifolds were at if I didn't know beforehand.

Well, I got the IB installed last night at 2:00AM and fired her up. VERY NICE!

This morning I did some measurements and the lowend extension on this thing totally annihilates my old dual Shiva 3ft3 sealed sub. I'm up over 15db from 10 to 18hz, and by the time the IB reaches 30hz, it's pretty much on par with the dual sealed Shiva. I have it running off a single channel of my Panasonic XR-25 receiver and I got 106db at 10hz before I turned it down, in fear of my neighbors getting mad. This was at my listening position, about 15 feet from the sub :D The Panny was only at -20db so I know it was only getting a handful of watts. Still, without any sort of suspension behind it, it was probably reaching 3/4 xmax and I didn't feel like bottoming any subs today. It's good to know she's going to be flat down to 10hz, AND be able to reproduce those notes well over 100db!

I took pics and before and after measurements, and still need to EQ it. I'll post all the info when I get it done, which should be mid-day tomorrow, if I'm not hung over from partying tonight :D

You'll know it when you hear it.

One-note bass sounds horrible, but I didn't realize that until I heard bass from a better sub (initially from a Hsu VTF-2). Bass should be much more subtle than most people are accustomed. For instance, think about the natural sound of a kick drum compared to how it sounds on a boombox or in your car. Very different. A "musical" sub provides a more realistic presentation of bass, not the thunderous, boomy effect that most of us are familiar with.

I know that SVS and music don't seem to go together but I really like my PB12 Ultra/2 with music. My prior SVS sub (PC+) was not so hot with the tunes.
