He had 20 years worth of appeals so he had his shot. More to the point, he had 20 years more than the 4 people he brutally killed in cold blood had.

I can't believe anyone is against this decision. A cold-blooded murderer who is responsible for teh forming of a gang responsible for dozens if not hundreds of other deaths. Yes he deserves to die. I actually had an argument wiht a friend of mine earlier today, her insisting that since he's "reformed" he should not only be spared but let free.

This is why women don't r un the country....

Reformed? Funny how they (criminals) all reform or find God a few feet away from the chair, the rope, or the needle. Guess they should have looked much harder a long time ago. I've heard all the arguements against the death penalty and I say "Hang 'em anyway!"

The death penalty won't stop people from commiting crimes.

Just as I am not against the death penalty, I've no issues with the extended appeals process its imposition initiates. It should be hard to execute someone. Yes, even a killer, if for no other reason than to ensure that he/ she is a killer.

I know little of the details of Williams' trial, so since those appeals have been exhausted, I have to conclude that he is guilty. Yet I am troubled...

Gov. Schwarzenegger wrote, "Without an apology and atonement for these senseless and brutal killings, there can be no redemption." Personally, I can see the atonement in Williams' anti-gang writings. So all that should be missing in the governor's mind is the apology Williams chose to withhold.

So why would a person facing execution withhold an apology that should save him? To that Williams, said, "I've been proclaiming my innocence for the longest. So for me to express remorse or an apology, that would, as I stated before, connote culpability, which I'm not. In fact, it would be disingenuous on my part."

Death is a hell of a way to maintain your innocence...

yeah i know. but i read today in the Times that many local preachers are discouraging rioting. I think that will count for something.



As far as Tookie's writings and books are concerned, I think it's possible they can benefit the public, especially when the public sees that no one is above the law.

Seriously, i've heard/but don't know for sure that Williams' books provide young black children a positive message. Doesn't erase his murderous past and doesn't give him the right to clemency, but at least he didn't use the past 21 years assaulting guards and committing gang rape in the showerooms (or maybe he did who the hell knows)

I wouldnt waste the money. Young black kids should take their positive messages from Dr Thomas Sole or Walter Williams or Condi Rice or the like. Black men and women who rose from modest upbringing to earn great success not some low life thug that was too lazy to work so he ran around killing and robbing people and only decided to become a good guy when he was on death row. The time to change wouldve been right before he fired that sawed off shotgun into the face of that convenience store employee. Then it wouldve mattered. Now it doesnt, at least not to me.

i just saw a live shot outside the place of Williams' execution via CNN. Doesn't look violent at all, looks more like a vigil. Hopefully it will stay this way. I think it will.

SAN QUENTIN, Calif. - Convicted killer Stanley Tookie Williams, the Crips gang co-founder whose case stirred a national debate about capital punishment versus the possibility of redemption, was executed Tuesday morning.

Williams, 51, died at 12:35 a.m. after receiving a lethal injection at San Quentin State Prison, officials said. Before the execution, he was "complacent, quiet and thoughtful," Corrections Department spokeswoman Terry Thornton said.

Some witnesses said the nurse who delivered the injection appeared to have trouble finding a vein in Williams' muscular arm. At one point, he uttered something to the nurse and offered to help, said Steve Ornoski, the prison warden.

"He did seem frustrated," Ornoski said.

Sorry Cathy. But you have to admit women tend to be more forgiving and liberal than men on the average. Whether that is a good thing or bad thing depends on your views, I guess...

There is something that Williams was able to deliver that the others you listed can't. I have not read his books (only seen the movie made of him, which was pretty decent) but there is something in a message from someone who has done wrong. Would Condi be as creditable in telling how gang violence is wrong? Of course we adults can take his reform with a grain of salt and wonder if that would have happened if he had not been convicted.

I do give him credit for the work he did to prevent gang violence but I also give him full credit for what he did prior to that. Now that he is executed, he has received credit for both.

I can't answer for most women Bobman. All I can tell you is that I am pretty liberal & believe in live & let live. However, DON'T MESS WITH ME!!! I promptly can become your worse nightmare & bring some friends along to help me out.

Let me put it to you this way, if I had been president during the first Gulf War, there would have been no need for us to be there now, cause I would have take out the main protagonists & then made it clear to the rest of the country to finish cleaning their own house or suffer the consequences!

I'm sure a good many of you married fellas have come across your wives limits & then found out the hard way that it should not be crossed ever again!

In some ways I think we are far more dangerous than men when provoked, & not the slightest bit interested in forgiving when that happens.
