Should I go with LCD or CRT??

I'm debating whether or not to get a flat panel LCD or another, larger widescreen HD tube tv.

I can get a 32" flat panel or a 34" tube for the same $$$. The convenience and the style of the 32 would be nice, but it would only be a 2" upgrade over the 30" ws hdtv I have now and have had no problems at all with. I'd get a 37" if I could talk the wife into the $$$ difference ($600).

The 34" ws hd tube would be a 4" upgrade and the advantages of the tube out weigh the depth and weight issues, imo.

Anyways, the lcd is a Westinghouse, which I'm sure is made for them by someone else. The tube is a Toshiba. I'll be upgrading a Philips, it will end up in the bedroom, I guess. The living room entertainment center will not hold it.


So, if the size and weight issue aren't as big of an issue as they are to most people, which way would you go?

Please remember.......I'm not a big HT hobbyist, it'll be used for sports as much as movies and such.

If size and weight is not a difference I think I would go with the tube over the Westinghouse LCD. I think you will end up with better reliability and repair possibilities. On the other hand, I don't know if I can say that because in warranty they would fix the tube set (big hassle) or replace the LCD and after warranty you wont want to pay the going price for repair of the tube set anyway. Repair costs are outragous and the smallest thing could cost you a $100 trip charge, a $120 parts cost and $150 repair charge. That would be $370 maybe and you probably wouldn't pay it anyway because over a year later you would find a better tv for $370. I guess I just ended up thinking the LCD would be a better choice. Another plus of the LCD is that if it goes through life with no problems then it will be easy to put anywhere in the future when you decide to upgrade.

Edit: For sports watching make sure if you go with the LCD that it doesn't blur when the camera pans. Some of the older slower ones had this problem.

Nd, I sure you know but a recent Sound and Vision reviewed a Westinghouse LCD. Not sure which size( mag is at work) but it may be worth looking up. Happy Hunting

If you like picture quality, go with CRT.

I've leaning towards the tube, mainly because of the extra 2" screen size. I'm gonna work on the wife to let me spend the extra for the 37" lcd. It's a Westinghouse too, but it's the new 1920x1080p model. Over 2 million pixels.

I have a problem w/ the lcd's. they can't keep up with the faster motion. IMO, CRT all the way...

Noel, I would also go with the CRT. I have read about so many problems with the newer tv's that to me, it just is not worth it.

You will most likely have the CRT for eons & never have to get it repaired, whereas a LCD ect. is a complete question mark, with a big helping of hope thrown in that it lasts.

Go CRT, outstanding picture with excellent reliability!

why not get a projector, which will probably cost about $500 and a $100 screen? That's what i did and now i have an 85" picture in my small room.

tube... it's what everyone is hot for right? tube pre, tube amps... tube CDP.. now get your **** a tube TV.

JK! you really can't beat the picture quality of a CRT. colors, brightness, contrast. etc.. CRT's have been around for ages.. I think they've pretty much worked out all the kinks in em by now. go for a 36" or larger if possible.

The largest widescreen is 34" in a tube. I wish they'd make one in the 40" range, but I don't even think they are looking into it. Actually Samsung has come out with a slim line, which is not as deep as the norm, but they've priced them too high imo.

I thought that RCA had made a 38" widescreen a few years back, but I can't find any now.

I just did a search and RCA did make a 38" HD Widescreen. You want to talk about salty. :rolleyes:

Most TV manufacturers are moving away from crt's and just subcon them to China. A lot of the newer Sony tube TV's have defects with their flyback. Flat panels will be the mainstream in a couple of years so support for crt's will diminish over time.

Newer generation lcds can keep up with the 'action' nowadays.

Look at the Westinghouse LCD in a store, to see if you can live with the color. I saw one at BB, it had pinkish reds (you might be able to adjust it to look better).

The Westinghouse 1080p LCD is very interesting if you are going to hook it up to a PC.

We've got a 34" WS CRT in the attic with the video games hooked up to it. Friggin nice TV.

yeah Noel, be like everyone else and get a CRT, or try a Lcd and be done with it.. small screens, heavy **** to move with a tube tv, we have a RCA big screen and we want a 42" plasma or lcd widescreen and recover some living space, they look cool and the ones ive seen in stores look nice to me.

Aww screw it!!! I'm just gonna keep waiting and spend the money on the Stang instead.
It's gonna need some tires, a window motor, flush, wheel bearings, etc, etc. Just some TLC, all minor ****.

I'll get a tv when they come down some more. That 37" is what I really want and they are half of what they cost this time last year, so they'll keep coming down. Maybe by the time that my tax return comes back, they'll have gone down another few hundred.

Personally I like LCD's best of all. I really like their pictuire quality and the fact that you never have to worry about burn in. My favorite is the Sony LCD. Their 32" goes for $1700 right now at CC. That would be the one Id get if I were in the market.

Never seen a LCD to rival my 34HS510, only thing that comes close is the sony 40in xbr lcd. Then again I've spent over 30 hours tweaking this thing in the service menu, so I am quite satisfied with the picture to say the least

I've got the MMC6500s that I had in the Chevy. I didn't let those or the amps and sub go. I've got my car audio guy getting me a price for the SRs. He got me the Momos for $225 installed, which I guess was a super price. Maybe he can get me the Srs for $400-450.

Tires are being put on today. It already has a decent head unit, KW KDC-X615, Excelon series. Hopefully I won't need to change it out. Then I'll have to decide on going with two 10s or one 12 in the trunk.
