Yeah...I only come here when i'm bored. I first came in the *shudders* "Dilehma" thread. :D
10" Pioneer TS-255C, ported tuned to 38hz with 25in^2 port area.

    Run off Profile CA1200 (900w@4ohm)
this would create a "sledge hammer" effect and a terrible localization of bass. lets say we downfire the sub... not only would it be localized, but the reflected bass waves would shoot right back at the cone and probably cancel out a lot of the sound... whereas the conical "normal" sub would allow these waves to bounce all around.

Doesnt seem like either an obtuse statment or one concerning the entire line.

Ive been on this board for over 2 years and havent been in a major brawl with anybody and Ive been in several heated debates on the HA side with no ill will or major flaming. But you post maybe twice a week and have managed to get into it with every single member on this forum.

Dont you find it curious that everybody is always misunderstanding you and thinking youre being a dick? Maybe its not everybody that has the problem. Maybe you are just being a dick. Like my pappy used to say, "If one guy calls you an **** ignore him. If 10 guys call you an ****, buy a saddle."

So what you guys are trying to say with all the arguing is that the IDMax is an upgrade over the Eclipse. Cool thanks:)

I don't think ALL alum subs are bad, but I haven't heard an Eclipse sound good yet. I don't doubt that I'd like an SVS... but hopefully they treat the metal so it doesn't resonate.

Doh, just thought of another option, a 15" RLP Soundsplinter. TC design just like the eclipse but a little larger so I can get back those few spl from moving to a larger car. Decisions decisions.

do you live anywhere close to the Kansas City area? I'll meet you if so, otherwise I won't take a trip just to hear yet another mobile system.

you have hit on my goal, though - to NOT be just another mobile system, so if i do ever achieve that, i'll let y'all know

The IDmax is one of the finest woofers in the world.

You will, however, be required to not be stupid with them.

    - Don't drop one, even a few inches (they're heavy, so this is more possible than you may think).

    - Do not exceed 1,300 watts rms.

    - Do not use bass boosts (the normal +1, +2, +whatever on your deck is fine, but adding 18 db's at 40 hz via the little knob on the amplifier will not be good at all).

    - Periodically check the voice coils... push in as straight as you possibly can on the center of the dustcap. If it scratches an itty bitty teeny weeny, pull your power back a little... or just watch how high you put it - if it scratches excessively - send it back for RnR and take alook at how you're doing things (lower the gains, get rid of the boost etc etc).

... I had two of them with roughly 1,300 on each and was insanely pleased. They will not really do anything until you put about 900 at least to them. They're 92 db efficient, but they still need lots of power. I was running an MTX 81000D to each - birth sheets at about 1200 @ 12.5 volts for each of them.

They will be one of the finest audio experiences you ever have, but they are like babies, you have to take care of them and feed them properly, or they'll take a **** on you. They're all hand built - and as such, each one is a little different in its attitude... one might be a little stiffer than the other and require a longer break in period to loosen up the suspension and soften up the surround. Don't get me wrong, they're all the same sub - they all sound the same, but when you first get them going one may very well sound different than the other because it takes less or more time to break in than the other. run them at about half power (500 w rms) for maybe 2 weeks... i know its a long time, it's aggravating, but you gotta do it. the other option, if you have dual 4 ohm voice coil ones... is to put both subs - all FOUR voice coils in series -- that'll be 16 ohms... use 12 gauge wire and plug it into the wall outlet (110V AC) you'll get roughly a 60 Hz sine wave through them at about 750 watts rms. it's higher than the 500 or so you'd want, and its a little risky, but when i got a replacement for a defective one (they used the incorrect surround on the speaker), and i didn't want to wait for the one to break in, that's what i did... left it on there about 5 hours. Be careful where you do it, you'll draw about 7 amps, so don't put it on the same line as like an air compressor or any high current **** or you'll kick the breaker.

Kind of ironic how a sub that good sounding could be so delicate. I hope ID gets their quality control issues taken care of, Im a big fan of theirs and would like to see them do well.

the non-compliant surround was a one-shot issue that was a couple years ago - one of their engineers, named RJ was fired because he took it and other minor issues too lightly.

as far as delicate - any precision piece of equipment is delicate. the higher end you get, the more delicate you get, because tolerances become tighter.

for example... a modern 5 litre motor can put out 300 horses with ease, the bearings have sick tolerances, sometimes as tight as 0.5 / 1000 th of an inch. the least little screw up in crank geometry will destroy those bearings and the crank... going with even a slightly thicker oil (say 10-30 versus 5-30, or 10-40 versus 10-30) can murder that motor in cold blood. 20 years ago, 5 litres was lucky to produce 150 - 175 horses... and tolerances for main bearings were between 1 and 3 / 1000 ... between 2 and 6 times that of modern engines. motors called for 10-30 and 10-40 and minor imperfections in the crank were to be expected.

long story short - as you push the envelope with equipment, your tolerances become tighter and tighter... room for error becomes so small that its ridiculous. with high end stuff comes high dollar and high 'care'.

both of which are worth it in most cases... if the equipment is in the area of something you're passionate about.
