I would love to hear how everyone progressed from 2 channel stereo to the latest fromats. How many receivers/ preamps have you gone through.
I started 15 years ago with an Adcom GFP555? preamp, Adcom GFA555 amp, and Polk RTA11t's.
Then I added a Yamaha prologic processor. Added Bose (sorry) 301's for rears and a Cerwin Vega center (again sorry)
Then I got a Pioneer DD receiver.
Then a Denon AVR-85 receiver and replaced the rears with Velodyne LD2 and an Advent subwoofer (awful).
Replace the Denon with a Fosgate 3a preamp and Technics DD?DTS decoder. Added another Adcom 555 and an Audioosource Amp3. Added Polk monitor 5's for rears, moved the Velodyne LD2's to the side speakers. Added a Sunfire MKII sub and CS400 center.
Replaced the Fosgate with a Citation 7.0 (sweet preamp) added second set of RTA11's to rears and moved the Monitor 5's to sides.
Purchased a Signature 2.0 preamp. Put the Monitor 5's in the closet (no 7.1). Added Polk RTA15tl's to mains. Put RTA11's in closet.
Purchased a Lexicon DC-2. Added a pair of Carver tfm-15cb's bridged for mains, move Adcoms to side and rears, and bridged the Audiosource for center. Purchased a CS1000 for center. Purchased RTA8t's for sides, moved the RTA11t's to family room.
So now I have Polk RTA15tl's up front CS1000 center, RTA11t's for rears and Polk RTA8t's with a Yamaha and a Eosone sub for the sides.
I think (hope) I am don for awhile. I kind of sucks though because you are always thinking of ways to improve the system.
I can't imagine ever replacing my old Polk's

Man, now that is some SERIOUS hardware!
Actually, my progression has taken me from HT to 2ch.
I started with a crappy Technics rack system then added in order:
RT7 fronts, Denon 1800 receiver, Paradigm PDR-10 sub, cs245i, R10's for rears, upgraded to cs400i, added carver m1.5t for fronts, m0.5t for center......
I also in that time frame assembled the garage rig: marantz 2215 receiver, Pioneer CS-88's
About 6 months ago I decided that I wanted to assemble a 2ch rig which I have all the parts for now, except a good cd player. It will consist of Adcom SLC-505 preamp, Carver m1.5t amp, Denon CD player (old and dying), Dahlquist DQ-10's or the RT7's
As far as the HT rig goes, I am for all intents and purposes done with it. 5.1 is all I aspire to, I play a movie and I am sufficiently entertained. Pretty much anything I aquire will now revolve around the mancave and 2 ch rig.

started with car audio, then when the car was gone all i had was the stereo out of the car, so a friend and i built my car audio into home audio. bought a 120w to 12v converter to run my 6 disc alpine changer (which i used until about 3 years ago as my only cd changer, it had a remote and worked great, y not), 2 ppi amps, phoenix gold 2 way/3way electronic x-over with low pass leveler, audio control eql. then built towers, housed in each tower was: 1 lanzar 10, 1 kicker 8, 2 altec lansing 5 1/4's, 1 altec lansing liquid cooled tweeter. the system rocked. sold it all and bought an onkyo dpl rcvr with the bose am7's up front and am3's for rears, it was alright but i still need more, some thing was missing. then i heard my friends polk rt16's, and relized what i was missing..sold off the whole set up and purchased a new onkyo dpl rcvr and polk rt10's and a definitive powerfeild 12, then a year later added the polk cs350ls and rt f/x surrounds. bought a dvd player and needed a digital rcvr sold the old onkyo bought a new onkyo 777. woke up my system from the old dpl 80x3, 25x2, with 105x5 with the new 777, then about a month ago upgraded the rt10's with some clearance rt800's and woke up the system again. now i want a new amp!!!!it will be awhile, i am going to get a part time position at a electronics store for the discount on toys.... today i am running onkyo 777, onkyo 6 disc changer, proscan dvd, rt800's, cs350ls, rt fx, definitive pwerfeild 12 pwrd sub, and a definitive pro cinima 100 pwrd sub..Speakers:

I started 10 years ago (when I was 14) with a JVC Pro-Logic receiver, matching JVC components (cd/tape), Yamaha 3-way NS fronts, JBL 2-way rears, and no center for a while. I eventually got a Bose center. Had all of that stuff up untill a month ago. It worked great for my apartment livingroom and 27" TV.
I just recently got a pair of R40's. This started me on an upgrade/I just wanna get new stuff movement. Last week I picked up some R10's for the rear, a cs175i center, and an HK AVR-510 receiver was purchased just 2 days ago. It's a bit of overkill for my 920 sq. ft. apartment, but it sounds great.
Next is a HK DVD50, a PSW250 or PSW350, and a new TV. At that point I'll probably want to upgrade the R40's etc. heh
I'll probably just stick with most of this untill I can get a real room for music/HT. -

this will test my memory but I will take a crack at it.
in the late 1970's I got my first Technic's turntable.A Technic's receiver and speaker's.I love spinning my Grease, Beatles, and Saturday night fever record's.
Then I got into 8 track also went with Technic's, they were the household brand then.I added it to the system.
Cassette came the folowing years, early 80's,My first was an Akai professional.
I played Guitar since 1979 and devoted alot of my money into that(paper route and bike store kid job money).
Then Home theater became dolby surround and Pioneer released receiver's on the market.I bought one.It started out with Panasonic Thruster's I picked up and for rears I used the Technic's that I replaced all the driver's in ( I blew them many times)My first bedroom VCR was a JVC 4 head hi fi.I was killer,And then CD came into my life with the purchase of a 500.00 Pioneer pdm-60 6 disc cd player(which I put away for nostalgic reason's and it still work's).I upgraded my speaker's to Advent Baby 2's.
I loved that system.
I then upgraded the VCR to top of the line JVC s-vhs when that came out.Killer stuff then.I also upgraded my speaker's to Pinnacle sub sat system, one of the first of it's kind.Passive sub.
I at the time upgraded my Akai to a Pioneer dual tape deck(the last one I owned).
Polk's always caught my eyes and my familt owned them since the earlt 80's.Yamaha was also a house hold name in my family.
I had to have this combo as I love going over my uncle's house and listening to his Jazz collection on Vinyl.
I owned a newer Technic's at this time as my dad picked my up a killer table and cartridge by shure with a diammond needle.
TV was a old Mitsubishi 19 inch.
I moved out on my own and wanted a new tv.Sony 27 inch was the best picture then(and still now)I had to have the new big tv.
I got into Polk years later I really wanted the rt16's but I couldn't find a pair as I waited to long to buy, the new rt series came out and I bought the rt1000p's with a Yamaha rxv992.The old Advent's where in the rear and a cs300 was on top of the tv.
dVD came next with a pioneer dv414, it was the hot ticket that year it came out so I bought it and was in awe how good it was.
I soon got into a pair of rt35's for rears.Super good system.I thought life couldn't get any better.Add in all the Monstercable and straight wire and I was in heaven.
The bass was lacking and I found the center couldn't keep up with the system. The I series came out and the cs400i was bought, and a pair of rt35's.The fx/500 followed close behind.
Pioneer Elite pdf-19 was out and i just had to have it, it sounded killer and with m950i's from Monstercable, 301 disc the old Pioneer 6 disc went into a box and put away.Pioneer Elite vsx26tx was the hot neww receiver and I was loving it, so I bought one.The psw450 was comming out as well and I was ready for it.It hit the streets on Tuesday, and I bought the very first one sold.I tested it against the Velodyne ct120(which I thought was a good sub for the money)and liked the Polk better.I wanted the psw300 but i hated the way it sounded.Panasonic came out with a superflat TV and at 32 inch it was lookin fine,I bought it.Satellite was picked up in all that mess and cable box was dropped.
I bought so many thing's over the last 2 years I would type forever .
here's what made it.
Sony 36 inch XBR
Phillips tivo/dsr6000 combo dss/tivo
Mitsubishi HSU746 S VHS
Pioneer Elite pdf-19 cd player
Denon avr3801

Mantis, how do you like the Monster line conditioner. I have a Panamax 1000+, but need to add another. Would you recommend the Monster over Panamax? Nice setup! Thanks, Jeff

Panamax and Monster make teriffic product's.I do perfer the Monster over the Panamax. But the Panamax is what you own now, if you get a Monstercable, you could test them side by side, very cool. You can make a good judgement. If the Panamax is better, trade the Monster,if Monster is better then keep it.I love it.Dan

I started as many others did with Car Audio. Then I went into HT with the RM6500 system. It didn't do so hot for music so I went and added RT1000p's to a JVC receiver and DVD player. That setup wasn't happening so I traded in the RM6500 system and sold the JVC stuff, then started working on a new HT setup. Rt55i's for mains and CS400 center and F/X300's for rears/surrounds with an Onkyo 777 rcvr and Onkyo DVD player. Moved the 1000's to a 2 ch setup with B&K Preamp and amp.

i first sarted long time ago dont rember the year with a rack setup it was prety cheap but it had a cd player and it was portable the cd player then some years later i got my frist doby pro logic recever it was a sony it had 100 wpc on the mains and 25 on the center and souround and i got my forst speakers a few months befor that they are klh they have 12 with a pasave rator 12 then i added klh bookshelf gor surounds and a fender 15 for center i just used the speaker it was awsome when i wanted to listen to rock a few years later i got my jbl sc 305 center a nice center
then in 99 i got my couch and loveseat and could not use my surounds any more so i started my upgrade
i went with polk caues they had the best wall mounted surounds what i realey wanted was these infinity but they droped their line i wanted and i dont like their curent line so i was looking at the polks and i just fell in love with them that when the bug hit next i got my sub ct 120 and my 27 inch tv after that i got my mains and 400 disk cd changer then i got my monster 3500 after that i got my onkyo 787 and my 800i then i re modeled my ht and got my seccond set of 500i -

Hi Warlocks:
Sorry for getting a little off-topic, but just a warning about mixing other line conditioners with Panamax. I have a Panamax 1500+ and I'm happy with it, but I found out from their technical support that they won't honor your warranties if there are interconnections between non-Panamax gear. Depending on how you are connected this may not be a problem, but for example if you use a non-Panamax extension cord to connect equipment to your your Panamax, your warranties won't be honored.
Another thing to keep in mind is that if you have a subwoofer connected on another outlet from you primary HT setup, even if it is on the same circuit and on another Panamax protector, they still won't honor the warranties (at the primary location) unless you totally protect the subwoofer line level audio connection with two audio Panamax surge protectors at each end of the audio circuit. Their reasoning is that without these procautions surges can enter the primary location via outside routes.
In other words if there's any chance of the equipment being protected by the Monster protector providing a "back door" entrance to the area being protected by the Panamax, they won't honor the warranties.
Finally, if you have two Panamax surge protectors on separate outlets, even if they are the same circuit, they may not honor the warranties for the same "back feed surge" reasoning.
Just thought you might want to know.
Larry -
Thanks Larry, I never realized that. I don't know how to proceed now. I have my Panamax plugged straight into the outlet. I have another surge protector plugged into another outlet on the same 20 amp circuit and my sub is plugged, without protection, in the another outlet on the same circuit. I understand their logic, but now I need to call them and figure out how I should have all the gear hooked up. Would someone be better off just going through their homeowners insurance and forget about the Panamax warranty?
-
Hi warlocks:
I understand your dilemma. I can help you by telling you what they told me and pointing you in the right direction. After you do your homework, it would be wise to still talk to techical services.
But first let's talk a minute about the Panamax warranties. Just because they are marketing ploys doesn't mean they aren't better than any insurance policy you can get if you play your cards right. If your warranty is like mine, they will reimburse you for $5,000,000 worth of properly connected equipment. This of course gets back to the marketing ploy I mentioned. I don't own $5 million of anything let alone A/V gear connected to my surge protector. However, I do have probably $30,000 worth of gear that I really don't want to have to take out a special insurance policy rider to cover. In the vast majority of cases we don't even have to worry about the connected equipment warranty, because what comes into place is the lifetime replacement warranty of the Panamax protector. If you get hit with a surge, in all likehood your Panamax will give up its life to save your equipment and after you file your claim, Panamax will replace the protector. No dead equipment and no need for insurance claims, or added insurance premiums.
So how do we properly protect your equipment? You might want to dig out the Panamax literature. If you don't have it you can download it from their web site. They like to talk about "Bubbles of Protection". What this means is all equipment that is connected to the same outlet (you can use both outlets of the same duplex outlet) and is connected to the same Panamax protector with other Panamax equipment. If your equipment doesn't have any interconnections with other equipment (such as subwoofers) which could provide a back door to a surge, then this "Bubble of Protection" (group of equipment) is covered under their warranties. As long as your second non-Panamax protector is isolated and does not feed your Panamax protected equipment, Panamax should cover their protected equipment.
What about your subwoofer? There is two ways to handle this. The technician wanted to convince me to run a 30 foot extension cord (three 10 foo Panamax extension cords) from my primary outlet to my powered subwoofer to extend the "Bubble of Protection" to it. Needless to say I didn't like this approach.
The second option, which I eventually implemented, was to buy two Panamax SubMaxs. They are specially designed to protect both the incoming power and the sub's line level audio connection. You can get them here:
Panamax SubMax
You will need two, one at each end of the audio feed to your sub, i.e., one at the sub and one at your receiver/preamp.
I hope this helps.
Larry -
Why would you need 2? One at both ends?
Just asking, we need 1 outlet receptacle for power, right? then 1 single (or pair) for the lfe rca to run through...., right?
Why 2?
Cheers,

RuSsman:
As I understand Panamax's reasoning having interconnected equipment on different outlets, even if they are protected with other Panamax protectors, can permit huge voltage potentials when huge surge currents are flowing. I believe the unprotected end of the audio connection (not the protected incoming power circuit) serves as the path of least resistance and a path to ground. The surge current follows through the audio connection and generates a huge IR voltage which elevates the voltage of everthing, frying even the so-called protected stuff.
Of course, the other more pragmatic answer in my case is, "Because Panamax won't honor my warranties if I don't, and I don't want to risk $30,000 by not buying a $40 protector.
Here's Panamax's Connection Diagram showing two Sub Max protectors.
Larry -
I see how they have it rigged, still doesn't jive with me. And besides, don't you guys have homeoweners insurance?
What is Panamax gonna do if your gear gets ganked?
Anyway, thats off topic, I'm all for better safe than sorry, but I wonder if all the risks involved, are worth having so many in/out connections on your cable (signal loss). Maybe it is not an issue....
Basically, I can see how one would help, but more than that, sounds like the manufacturer is making some extra sales....
Cheers,

It's a good thing this entire forum is called Off Topic, but we shouldn't be too concerned because after all it was warlocks who started the thread and he's getting his money's worth.
With regard to your ins and outs concern, there is an insertion loss of .1 db per device.

Well, after getting warlocks original thread off topic with Panamax discussions, I feel out of courtesy I should at least try to resume the original How many receivers/ preamps have you gone through? topic. The only problem is that I dont have the memory to go back to my Carver Receiver and quadraphonic days.
So if you wouldn't mind too much, Id like to provide my response to a very similar question posted in another forum, How often do you all make a receiver upgrade?
At the risk of boring all the audiophiles here goes:
I discovered serious home theater (and began my upgrade addiction) when my trusty old rear projection TV died, and I was forced to make the decision whether to replace it with a standard TV or one of the HDTV's that had just hit the market at more than twice the price. I guess I turned out to be an early adopter since I ended up buying a first generation HDTV with all the pains that that entails.
As Arthur so astutely remarked, buying an expensive TV helped keep the audio quest quite for a while. However, it unfortunately rekindled my interest in A/V gear. After buying the TV I realized that my cable TV reception was totally inadequate and I had to upgrade to HD digital satellite. However, there wasn't a lot of HD content, so to get the most out of my set I had to buy a DVD player. That's when the digitally challenged nature of my system finally became all too apparent for me to ignore. I just had bought three digital devices and I didn't even own a digital receiver!
My problem was my old Pioneer receiver was just too damn reliable! I had no good excuse to replace it like I did for the TV.
To deal with this I ended up going down an upgrade path that greatly extended the useable life of my receiver. To this day I still don't know if it made any sense from an economic point of view, but it certainly deferred several receiver iterations. What I did was I brought a Vantas digital surround adapter and amplifier. This gadget turned my Dolby Prologic receiver into a Dolby Digital receiver, and it furnished three 100 watt amplifiers to power the front center and side surrounds. I could connect all of my digital sources to it. The effect was wonderful. Ahh life was good!
Until Surround EX came along, that is. So, I continued my ADD-ON approach and instead of upgrading my receiver, which was still going strong, I bought a Circle Surround processor to extract that rear center channel. Initially this didn't work out so well. I won't bore you (more than I already have) with the details, but suffice it to say I needed to get to the AMP IN connections of the digital adapter, and it didn't have any!
So that lead me down the path to separates and the used amplifier market. At the advice of the folks over at the Technical Setup forum, I started buying some really nice Parasound amplifiers. I started with an HCA-1501A, for the side surround channels and now all the surround channels sounded wonderful! Ahh life was good!
But...I unfortunately discovered separates and eBay. Now my surrounds were sounding so good, I just had to upgrade the amplifiers powering my more important front speakers, Polk SDA 1-Cs and CS400i. So I bought another three-channel Parasound amp, an HCA-2003. Now the fronts sounded wonderful. Ahh life was good!
But.. then I heard about processors that could magically create 7.1 discrete channels on playback even though the soundtracks werent even recorded with 7.1 discrete channels. They could even do this with sources with as few as two channels. I just had to have this.
So A DECADE OR SO LATER I FINALLY REPLACED MY LAST RECEIVER, with a Lexicon MC-1 (and bought another Parasound HCA-1501A amp). Now everything sounds wonderful. Ahh life is good.
But, then I heard about...
Hopelessly addicted to upgrading,
Larry -
Larry, thanks again for all the input. I will be looking into the extra protection. I don't know anything about the Vantas processor, but I just saw one on some used gear sight for about $200.00 and it sounded like a really good deal for all the features and amps it provided.
-
Larry, what part of DC are you in. I live in Burke. I don't know anyone in the area into HT. All my friends and WIFE, think I am crazy. They just don't understand!
-
Hi warlocks:
I'm pretty sure that Vantas went out of business, but that gadget is a quality built product. There were two versions, one that converted standard stereo to Dolby Digital and one that converted Dolby Prologic to Dolby Digital. I bought the first because it was more versitile, it could do both. It cost about $650. Here's a review for the Prologic version, it went for $600.
Vantas DPA-P87 Digital Surround Processor/Amplifier
There's no question that if its in good working order that $200 is a great deal. Remember in addition to providing Dolby Digital, this thing is providing three 100 watt channels of amplification.
I've attached the Owner's Manual of mine.
Larry
EDIT: FOR SOME REASON I THE ATTACHMENT DIDN'T WORK AND THE EDIT FEATURE DOESN'T SEEM TO PROVIDE FOR ATTACHMENTS. I'LL SEND ANOTHER MESSAGE AND SEE IF I HAVE BETTER LUCK. -
Dear warlocks:
First let me say that while it's true that your wife and friends don't understand, they nevertheless are correct, you are crazy. Who in their right mind would buy all that stuff and then look for more ways to upgrade? And just because your fellow inmates posting here at the Polk web site have that same aberation, including me, doesn't make you any less crazy.
In answer to your question, I'm just a few miles from you in Fairfax Station.
For your information there's a HT Club that meets periodically in the DC area. Here's a thread at the AV Science forum that kicked it off:
HT Club in Maryland?
Here's Alan Cohen's email address. He's the club's organizer.

PS I'VE ATTEMPTED TO ADD THAT ATTACHMENT OF THE VANTAS OWNER'S MANUAL. I THINK THE FIRST ATTACHMENT DIDN'T TAKE BECAUSE I WAS TRYING TO ATTACH A PDF FILE WHICH WAS NOT ONE OF THE RECOGNIZED FORMATS. I CONVERTED IT TO A ZIP FILE AND HOPEFULLY IT WILL WORK. IF NOT, AND YOU ARE STILL INTERESTED IN READING THE MANUAL, I'D BE HAPPY TO EMAIL IT TO YOU. -
Thanks Larry, maybe I'll see at one of these get together's. BTW, I was searching google for something, don't remember what, and found your web site by accident. Nice set up!

Hi warlocks:
Thanks for the compliment about the web site. One of these days I'll have to make it "prettier", but I set it up so that I could more easily exchange information with various forum members.
It's nice that Yahoo provides free web hosting. However, they monitor their free sites on an hourly basis. If the traffic exceeds what would average out to 3 GB per month, they temporarily shut your site down and send you a message suggesting you buy one of their premimum web sites. It's happened to me just a couple of times after posting on one of the higher traffic forums.
Hope to meet you at one of the Home Theater gatherings.
