Walk the Line

This movie was really good, and I encourage anyone who is a fan on Johnny Cash's music to go check this one out. Joaquin Phoenix did a good job playing the part, and actually did all of the singing himself, which was pulled off very well. If you're going to compare this to Ray I would say that Jamie Fox did a better job of playing Ray Charles than Joaquin did in this movie of playing Johnny Cash. The thing that made this better for me was the overal movie, the narrative, etc. It was just a whole heck of a lot better than Ray was. I'm a fan of Johnny's music, and I'm more than impressed with this movie, so I would assume someone who isn't a fan, per se, will really like this one.

    I want to see this.

Did anyone what that disaster of a show "I Walk the Line: A Night for Johnny Cash," CBS' tribute concert. That was just horrible. Bad performance after bad performance. Alison Krauss sounded great as always, not sure her and Dwight Yoakam in a duet was the best match but compared to the rest of the crap that night, it was the best I saw.

The worst was Kris Kristofferson and the Foo Fighters was just about the worst live performance I have ever seen, Kris was his usual rough single note slurring vocals, but Dave Grohl was singing in the wrong key, I mean he was so far off it was a joke.

Sorry to vent, but I was hoping to see some good performances and it sucked.

    Hope the movie is great.

Im a recent Cash fan, didnt really get into his music until after he passed, unfortunately. i remember "A Boy named Sue" from when i was growing up, but not much else of his. Then I heard the American III I think it was and... wow... he made those songs kick ****, esp Rusty Cage, it sounds waaaay better than the original. I saw the movie on Friday, having never really known his life story, and I was kinda blown away by the first scenes with his brother Jack... I wont spoil it, but do go see it.

Ray sucked ****........watching that movie to me was as draining as it probably was to have lived his life......

I might check this one out, and I agree that tribute was one bit blowfest.

I'm looking forward to this one too, I'm a big Cash fan. I friggin' hate Reese Witherspoon though (not sure why, she just annoys me), so I will have to try to block her out.

I too suffered through that show last week on CBS. Man that was awful. Kris Kristofferson is a very good songwriter, IMO, but he just can't sing a lick. And his performance with Foo Fighters was terrible...and I'm a big FF fan. But that just sucked. I hate to admit it but I think Martina McBride might have been the highlight of the show...and I loathe mainstream country. But her cover was good. Oh god, and how bad was Sheryl Crow's "Ring of Fire"? Ugh.

Caught this movie and it really is good - it's in my "own" category on DVD. I was surprised at first because I didn't think he was doing a great job with Cash's voice, but then I went back and listened to some of my old Johnny - it really is pretty good after all though... well worth the watch!

Watched it last night, loved it. Good flick, Joaquin did a great job, as did Reese Witherspoon.

I thought his childhood was very Ray Charles-like.

what's utterly amazing about Phoenix's vocal performance is that not only does he nail Cash's trademark pipes, but he does a spot-on imitation/emulation/adoration of Cash's vocal evolution
it would have been enough (and still amazing) for him to simply channel Cash's vocals circa Folsom, but to actually be able sing to so similarly to Cash during various stages of his career is unbelievable
I'm reminded of when I was in the theater for this film, surrounded by a bunch of suburbanite Kentuckians, who ironically like to taste culture from time to time by glimpsing and "quasi-appreciating" the other side of the tracks -- "hey Hunter, Buffy look at the Natives!!!", if you will
and you could actually hear a few snickers from the crowd when Phoenix first started to sing, because to those only familiar with Ring of Fire, something seemed a little off -- like a bad Vegas impression, which might only get worse if endured for two hours...
needless to say (though i'll say it anyway), he was doing an unbelievably accurate version of a younger Cash who had yet to find his voice, proper
ladies and gents -- give this man the Oscar

Watched it tonight; Wow, was it amazing. It's nice to see a movie actually live up to all the Hype!!!! They both did outstanding singing. And I forgot on multiple occaisions I was actually watching an actor and not Mr. Cash himself.

Watched it last night and thought it was one of the better movies I've seen in a while. Excellent performances by Joaquin and Reese. It's one of those movies that I didn't want to end and would have been happy if it were much longer, extending later into Johnny's career.

Audio and video quality were top notch too - one of the better DVD transfers I've seen in a while. Did find that the DTS soundtrack was a bit bass heavy at times, with the opening scene at Folsom Prison shaking my room up pretty good.

    Highly recommended!

Mr Grand, No just the movies about **** cowboys and I do understand Hollywood that is why the movie was even considered before "Walk The Line" which was a far better flick.Thank god brokeback didnt win last night it restored some of my faith in the Academy. I was surprised about the crash win.

Still, your comment is inappropriate and believe me I am no kind hearted bleeding soul, however, the world is a diverse place with all people adding something to the pot. Best to use that term to describe a cigarette and that is it.

I liked the movie, would of liked it to have gone on a bit, but the point was made and taken, it was a bit difficult for me to fathom Ms. Witherspoon in a serious role since I have only seen her in comedic ditzy roles, but if the movie is true to life I learned some things about JC.

But did you even see BBM? How can someone dislike a movie they have never seen? This was an incredibly diverse year for the movie industry. I may not like all the movies that came out this year.. but there were some real gems out there. If you choose to not watch a particular movie because of it's content, that's your right. But don't come in here and condem a movie you have never seen.

Yes, this forum is open to everyone.. we are a diverse bunch of people... but using derrogatory words isn't welcome.

Apparently there is something on the CMT that ran a few times this weekend that had some footage of Cash performing in Folsom Prison. I don't watch that channel, nor do I have cable...so I wondered if anyone else had seen it.
