HD Direct TV screwed up my vcr,XBox,overair TV

It took me forever to hook up our speakers,sub,tv,vcr,dvd,and receiver.I just had Direct TV install ,HD Tvo, and HD dish. Before they came every thing worked fine. Now my TV has picture - no sound - vcr no picture no sound -xbox picture no sound. Direct Tv works great. The first guy messed up my system. They sent two " qualified " men to fix the problems. They tried for over an hour to fix the problems---- All they did was show me a few things on hd tvo.
PLEASE someone help with my wiring. The best hookup for my system. I'll start over if I have to-- I have Toshiba 36" HD TV. Toshiba progressive scan DVD, Sony VCR,XBOX Panamax 500 surge protector line conditioner, HK 525 receiver -- -- Polk lsi surrund speakers ,SHU Sub

Its way to much to write out without missing a step. You need to get the H/K manual out and follow the steps. I have all the same equipment as you and everything will work just trust that. Start with the receiver, hook all the speakers up, then add one source at a time and check it, remember you have to adjust your H/K menu settings and your Toshiba monitor. You have to set the tv to whatever source is being played to it. Just go along slowly follow the hookup directions and then if you really get stumped ask a question here. We have some In members maybe if your lucky they are not to far from you.

Ok simple.
First off we are going to make the receiver the main switch so everthing is going threw it.
DVD(DVD is a input on receiver, Assign coax 1 to DVD)
Run a component cable to the DVD Component in on receiver
Run a digital coax cable to coax 1
HDTIVO DSS(use video 2 as input and assign optical 2 and component 2 )
Run a component cable to the Component 2 in on receiver
Run a optical to optical 2
XBOX, if you have the HD kit(use Video 1 and assign optical 1)
Run the component cable and audio to the Tv component 2
Run the optical to optical 1
VCR(use video 3 and no assign needed)
Run analog audio and composite video to Video 3 on receiver.
SUBWOOFER
Run a analog RCA design or sub cable to SUB preout.
Now run 2 monitor out cables. One to TV on Component 1 and composite video to video 1 on tv.
There will be no audio at tv except Xbox if you want it. use the receiver all the time for audio and video.
This is the easiest way to wire your system and for it to work perfectly.

Ok, so here are some questions for you. How do you want to watch TV, only with the sound system or just the TV itself? Same goes for everything else. Do you want to have to turn on your entire sound system or just the TV and the individual device? Or do you want a way of doing either/or?
Now your answers were will dictate how you need to have things hooked-up as well as what limits there might be on the gear you have.
So first thing first, lets get that XBox working with your TV. I would assume that you want to use the full sound system with this as well as use a component video connection. First connect a component video cord from the back of the H/K reciever's "component out" one of your TV's "component in". Next connect the component out from the XBox to a "component in" on the H/K reciever. Now connect a optical spdif cable from your XBox to a "optical in" on your H/K reciever. Now using the H/K reciever remote, go into setup and then the "source select" and assign the appropriate optical audio feed to go to the correct component video feed. Make sure you have put your TV on the component in that you connected from the H/K reciever (you need to do this for the setup menu to show up). Now turn on the XBox and you should be able to see it on the TV and hear it on your home theater speakers.
Now you need to do the same thing with your DVD player (unless it has HDMI or DVI output for video).
For the VCR and Satilite, things get a little more tricky. I assume that the satilite uses HDMI or DVI for the video. You need to connect those to your TV. You should also connect a spdif audio cable to your H/K reciever from the satilite box AND connect the L/R RCA cables from your satilite box to the L/R audio inputs on the back of your TV that coorespond to the HDMI/DVI input (this will allow you to simply watch satilite with just using the sound from your TV or listen to surround sound on your home theater). You need to configure your H/K reciever to use that optical or other spdif audio signal with one of the feeds. However, when you want to watch satilite, you put your TV on the HDMI/DVI input and you can plain watch tv in stereo, or turn off the sound on the TV itself, and turn on the H/K reciever and put it on the audio device you just configured for the satilite feed. Now you need to connect your VCR properly to the satilite. There should be a "to VCR" co-axle cable connection on the back of the satilite box. Simply connect that to your VCR and you can record anything from satilite that way (if you want to record XBox game sessions or snipets from a DVD, you have some more wires to string). Now connect the component, or s-video, or RCA video connection to your H/K reciever. If you use s-video or RCA, I highly suggest simply connecting to the "VCR in" on the H/K and also connect the L/R RCA connections to the appropriate audio inputs. Now this assumes that you want to use your home theater speakers when you use your VCR. You could split the RCA video and audio outs and run one set to the reciever and another directly to the TV. Finally you will need to run a s-video or RCA video connection from the H/K reciever that says "to TV" to the TV.
That should just about cover it for connecting the components. You should have video and audio to satilite and the VCR simply by putting the TV on and selecting the corret video input. To play DVD's or the XBox, you need to turn on the H/K reciever, put your TV on the correct component input, select the correct input ont he H/K reciever and off you go with surround sound. You can also get surround sound on your satilite feed by turning on the H/K reciever, muting the audio on the TV itself and selecting the satilite feed on the H/K reciever (but keeping the TV's video input selected to your satilite HDMI/DVI connection).
Again, there are several assumptions in the above, the big one being that your satilite connection has a DVI or HDMI output for video.
