Business has been pretty good these past few months and I have a little extra cash to do some upgrades on my ht and I wondered what you guys thought I should upgrade first. I'am looking at upgrading my current reciver an Onkyo TX-SR 600 (6.1 at 80w per channel)to a Denon 3806 ( 7.1 at 120w per channel) or upgrading my sub a Klipsch KSW 15 to a SVS PB12/2. Both upgrades are around $1200 each and I just wanted to see what guys think will give me the most improvment for the money

The Denon. The new avr3806 is awesome as expected.

The Klipsch sub isn't a bad one. I used to Install them.

Mantis, not to get off topic, but about the Klipsh sub, a couple off weeks ago I took the woofer out of the sub box and there where 2 to pieces of yellow foam inside the box and it looked like they had been just thrown inside. I got the sub from a local dealer that was using it for his own ht and I was wondering would the foam have been put in from the factory or maybe added later

Well as far as the most impact to your home theater I would have to say the SVS. The change will be felt on almost every movie that you play.

I would get the SVS, then an amp, then a pre/pro. Get out of the receiver game and go separates. (if your Onk has pre-outs for all channels anyway)

Just a thought in case the next few quarters are good to you as well... :)

Ok, dude here is what you do...
Go to circuit city online and pick up a Onkyo TX-SR 702 on sale for $524.99 (after $275.00 savings). This will give ya 100 watts instead of 80, but more importantly give you line level pre-outputs. The go out and buy a seperate amp for your fronts. You should be able to find a good two channel amp for under $1000. I bought the Niles SI-2125 from crutchfield.com for about $750 and whas happy with it. I also have a SVS, but dont feel it added as much to my system as a seperate amp, especially if you cross over your fronts around 60hz or lower. And if you got enough money left over, go ahead and buy another amp two channel amp for the center channel. Then you can use the Onkyo to power the surrounds.

Going separates, like Michael mentioned above will give you the best sound for your $1,200. If your Onkyo has pre-outs by some amps, if not, sell the Onkyo and then buy a pre/pro and amps. Don't go and waste $1,200 on another receiver when you can get better sound for less by going with separates. I bought my Outlaw 950 7.1 pre/pro for $400 and 5 Adcom 2-channel amps for under $600.

The SVS would be a nice upgrade over your kilpsch, but that would be my second choice.
    If...
Ron dislikes a film = go out and buy it.
Ron loves a film = don't even rent.

Yup, i totally agree. Also if you can buy used, you might be able to find a pre/pro and amps for under $1500.

Separates all the way. What type of speakers are you powering? How large is your room and how far away do you sit from your mains? What dB level do you tend to listen to? Answer these and we can help you out more.

The foam is in there to get the subwoofer to its apropriate internal volume. Don't remove it.

I third, fourth, whatever the seperates.

You might also be able to find a used B&K receiver in the price range you are looking in which would own the Denon and Oinker in every way possible.

If the sub is sealed, by all means take the foam out. That will up the Q which means a less steep rolloff = GOOD. If it's a ported design, I wouldn't touch it as it "might" help obtain the proper tuning.

Don't you have that reversed? the lower the Q the more gradual the roll off. At least that's what my graphs are telling me ;) Unless Q and Qtc are two different things...

And I've always read you want some kind of fill in your subs, it helps with standing waves and absorbs any high frequency info that makes it past the crossover. It also "tightens" the bass.

I' ve been looking for ways to try and go with the separates like many have suggested but I just don't have the room to add any amps right now since my ht is also my living room. About 1 1/2 years ago I replaced my 46'' rptv with a 60'' lcd rptv and had to take out my component rack so all my gear has to fit in the T.V. stand and I don't have any where to move the rack that wouldn't require a major rewiring for the speakers and video cables.Although I'am sure your all right about separates being the way to go, until a can build a media room or the kid moves out i'am afraid i'll have to stick with the just a receiver for now

Yes, I meant to say lower the Q :o

As far as stuffing, if you have a sealed sub using polyfill can increase your theoretical box size by up to 20%. As far as using some type of sound absorbing foam on the sides, most of the threads I've read on the DiY speaker sites say it's a waste of time, and more importantly, it decreases the size of the box. If you're using a woofer (non sub) up to say, 500hz, I could see using some foam. Aside from that, I think it's a waste.

If you know this is going to be your last power upgrade for a while, I would save up and go with a sunfire receiver. There is one for sell here for a $3200...

well, its been a while since I posted this thread and I've just now gotten around to telling you guys what happened with whole upgrade thing, well what happen was I didn't get the denon or the svs because guess what .... the new x-box came out and my son felt like he just might die if he didn't get one, so we had to drop about $600 on that thing ( x-box, extra controller, and a few games) but I haven't lost the fever yet now I'am looking at the Denon 3805 instead of the 3806 as far as I can tell they are the same accept the 3806 has some hdmi inputs and outputs and I've found several on the internet for around $750 shipped so maybe after the holidays I'll be able to puts some more money towards the Denon

HT processing, well, the Denon gets great reviews, but the Onks do an excellent processing job for HT. The most important speaker in the HT is the sub, it has the most work to do. I would buy the best one your budget will allow. I know little about subs beyond that so if the SVS is better than yours I think this is where you should put the dough.
