New SvS pb-10 Missing A LOT of bass

I recently got my pb-10 in about a week ago and have been testing ever since. After all the hype i'm not to pleased with it's performance. It performs awesome on SOME thuds for example in finding nemo when the shark hits the ship and explosions like in Hitch hikers guide when the red escape pod lands. But THATS IT. It's completely not present in some explosions and for example the car crash on my old sub produced bass on the same movie. And on the first Xmen on chapter 14 when they are in the train station when cyclops blows a hole in the roof on my old sub there was a big swing in bass it does a hit then dives down. The svs did not come close to picking that up you cannot hear it AT ALL as if there is nothing there is the first place. I have found this missing bass in a lot of other stuff too. Dinosaur growls comes only from my speakers with no bass presence.

hmmm....strange; what equipment are you using with it? How do you have your crossover setting?

Hmm you may have told me my problem. I'm using a yamaha htr-5250. No crossover.

It could be your setup, sounds like maybe you have a gap between the sub and speakers ranges.

It could also be that the old sub had huge spikes in the midbass range that you became accustomed to and the SVS is just flatter. If this is the case, you have to overcome the addiction to "boom". How does it sound when used for music?

Go through your chain and figure out where the low bass is being filtered out at. The SVS is more than capable of producing the lowest lows, especially in a room.

Did you set your speakers to "small" on the AVR, so bass below the crossover point goes to the sub? (I'm guessing this is your problem)

music is very low bass thats it. Yes there is a big gap

Tell us how you have it hooked up. are you using a cable from the subwoofer output or are you running your main speaker lines through the sub.

Edit:There may be a variable setting in your receiver, but I do recall some Yamahas have set points.

Well, I am not familiar with that Yamaha... but if it's a receiver I am sure it should have as part of the speaker configuration a setting for the frequency at which bass should go to the subwoofer...doesn't it?

I don't believe the PB10 has a low pass filter, but allows the receiver to set the crossover. Sounds like a receiver issue, but I would think there is at least a fixed crossover (probably 100 or 90) in the settings menus.

It doesn't; the PB10 only has a line input.

Be sure

You have the subwoofer hooked up to the Yamaha rec. "SUB OUT"
You have set the receiver to subwoofer "yes"

On your Yamaha you can choose for the bass and LFE information to be routed SW/MAIN/BOTH that means bass is routed to your subwoofer or front speakers or both. Depending on your main (front) speakers, this is usually set to SW, directing the bass to your subwoofer.

What are your mains? Do you have satelittes?

Did your old subwoofer have a variable crossover? Where did you set it?

What is the internal crossover in your receiver? Does it have one?

Sounds like the SVS is crossed WAY below what your old subwoofer and isnt picking up NEAR the information it is supposed to.

My sides are satelittes soon to be rti6's i have the sub on the "Sub Out" on my reciever i'm trying to find the crossover on the reciever if it has one what would it be called Freq? I think my old sub (psw202) had a crossover on it. I'm also trying to see if all my speakers are set to small i'm pretty sure they are...kinda hard to do now that my remote just stopped freakin working...jesus

ok my center was, for some reason, set to LRG i reset that to small i think i found the crossover. one says D.D LFE ( I assume means Dolby Digital) and the other DTS LFE. Now the highest it goes is 0 and the lowest is -20 which way fills in more of that missing gap?

higher the number, higher the output. higher to the positive side, anyway. but this is just the output and not a crossover. just turn it up by ear and leave alone when satisfied.

I have the Yamaha 5240 so my receiver is similar. The crossover is fixed at 90hz. Set your receiver up as follows:

Set all speakers to small
set sub to yes/on
direct LFE/bass to Sub only
turn the dynamic range to STD or MAX, your choice.
set the LFE output to -5, the DTS and Dolby Digital LFE levels to 0.
Then adjust the subs volume by ear using the volume dial on the SVS.

I must say changing that center from lrg to small made a difference already. I thought i had messed with all the setting which i did but i didnt even relize it was set to lrg. If i do upgrade my reciever which route should i go?

i like my harman/kardon. you can pick up a lower end model for cheaper and even refurb on ebay with fac. warranty. or go with onkyo. some have gone with outlaw. everyone else can throw in some model numbers if they so choose.

wow....i put music on and it's a HUGE difference still kinda low volume thats what the problem was...center set wrong

what is d-range?

not to sound cheap but the lowest possible....

I would say that it is a setting for reducing the dynamic range (volume variance) for late night listening. Great for DVDs after hours.
