My husband hooked our speakers up to a new reciever and now we have to have the volume on 30 or so to hear anything? Is something wrong? How do I trouble shoot this?

Could be lots of things. Obviously the first thing to check is all your connections. Give a little more information about your equipment, like what receiver you're using, which speakers, what source are you trying to listen to, etc.. Someone might be able to point you in the right direction.

    And welcome to the forum!

Does your source (dvd player, cd player, computer etc..) have a variable output? Like does it have it's own volume control.

And, if we're talking about a AV surround receiver, which I assume we are, have you set your individual channel levels?

This is used in the basement. There's a TEAC AG790 receiver, Monitor 40 speakers by Polk, an old Sony CDP291 CD player, and a really old Marantz 6110 Turntable.

I guess the sound isn't as low as I thought, but you don't hear much of anything until around 12. It needs to be around 30 to hear it loud in the basement.

Volume controls vary in how quickly they "ramp-up". Possibly just a new piece of equipment, unfamiliar to you, that requires a higher volume setting than you're used to? As long as it sounds okay at reasonable listening levels, then I doubt that there's anything wrong with the equipment.

I'm not familiar with that receiver, but looking at its specs on Teac's website, it looks like it's rated 100wpc, 8 Ohms, 20-20K, both channels driven. Should be adequate for driving Monitor 40's.
