I got the Dodd I picked up off Audiogon (with ND13's help, thanx again!!)
and some 6922 tubes (JAN I think) from unc2701 (Thanx to you too)
It is a significant improvement over the Radii I was using, not that I didnt like that unit, it served me well.
The Dodd is definitly more detailed across the board. The bass responce seems very slightly diminished, and a skosh more warmth would be nice, but I'm assuming these little issues will be rectified with some tube rolling. It can also be my basement, as I said before, I definitly have listening environment issues I will have to address to get to the next level.
Oddly enough, this thing seems to make my amp work harder. more gain perhaps? the power meters on my Carver dance around like hell when I push them, where the Radii seemed to struggle to get higher volumes. Basically, with the Dodd, I have good sound at any volume level I choose, up to, and well beyond, my volume comfort level. its just clean and effortless.
so now, just as I asked with my Jolida, I'm hoping to get tube suggestions from the more learned amongst us, especially Dodd owners.

Lou,
So far, my favorite tubes have been the Amperex Bugle Boys from Holland(6DJ8 w/ white lettering vintage 1961+/-). The perfect tube, so far. Believe it or not, the new 6922 Groove Tubes sound really good right out of the box(got them for $19.80 shipped for a matched pair). They look like a copy of the Amperex to me. The 6DJ8 Amperex Globes that RuSs brought to me sound real nice, too, just not enough hours on them yet to really judge. I've got some Eis and Siemans on the way. The Jan 6922 blue letters I have aren't burned in yet, either."SOME PEOPLE CALL ME MAURICE,
CAUSE I SPEAK OF THE POMPITIOUS OF LOVE" -
60's vintage Amperex and Siemens are both real nice in the ELP.2 channel - Willsenton R8 tube integrated, Holo Audio Spring 3 KTE DAC, audio optimized NUC7i5, Windows 10 Pro/JRiver MC29/Fidelizer Plus 8.7 w/LPS and external SSD drive, PS Audio PerfectWave P3 regenerator, KEF R3 speakers, Rythmik F12SE subwoofer, Audioquest Diamond USB cable, Gabriel Gold IC's, Morrow Audio SP5 speaker cables. There in lies the problem. Finding them cheap, if at all. The cheapest I've been able to find "true" 7308s has been in the $100+ range for each ."SOME PEOPLE CALL ME MAURICE,

Yep, 2nd full week of listening and swapped in the Siemens. I'm leaning heavily on these over the Amperex. -

First of all, congrats on your ELP. Glad to hear you're enjoying it.
So far, you've been given a list of older tubes. IMO the Amperex 7308 is the best I've heard. For current production I like JJ 6922 best.

will look for some of those listed tubes to play with, I know they had bugle boys on sale at polkfest, if only I knew (smacking myself in the head)
orderred some EI elites for kicks and giggles, I remember someone saying they liked them in the Dodd, and I love the 12AX7's in my Jolida.Living Room 2 Channel -

I picked up an Audible Illusions L-1,my FIRST tube pre, I have been switching between fasters para-1200 and my last adcom 555 thru 1'cs,I'm like a kid in a candy store, even hooked up my old laserdisc, put on some hendrix, f-mac,back to dvd,--Santana, Page/Plant,then to CD's,,I think that I'll have to listen to everything again, the smoothness, seamless transition from mids to highs,,everything that I was missing in my system is now there, depth of soundstage, not to mention the warmth and ease of listening(bass also impressed me). Been up since 4am with the headphones,I'm just overwhelmed. Now, on to try a belles 350, I cannot thank the members of this forum enough, for the advice, hook ups, etc,, ThanksJC approves....he told me so. (F-1 nut)

I have heard that the AI pre's and the belles amps are a match "made in heaven", its at least worth a listen, as I have a unit lined up for an audition in my home(local seller),, we'll see
Opps, did not mean to deviate from the original thread,, a thousand pardons,,gonna go tube shoppingJC approves....he told me so. (F-1 nut) -
DAGLJAM6 wrote:Yep, 2nd full week of listening and swapped in the Siemens. I'm leaning heavily on these over the Amperex.
I did a couple of hours of listening with the CBSs(Siemens) and I think they are an excellent tube. I still like the Bugles a tad more, due to a tighter and deeper bass response. The Ei Elite gold pins look to be almost new. I think they need a little more burn-in, but they were definitely a great value. They were better with jazz than with rock. In alot of ways equal to the Siemens, but not quite as detailed, yet.
As far as the Siemens go, when I had them driving the monos, which I've put some very nice Telefunken Diamond 12ax7s in, they were alot more on par with the Bugle Boys, but when switching over to the AMC 2100, the **** end went away. Maybe it was the tube pre/tube amp combo that meshed so well????
Anyway, I hope that gives you a little more insight on the 6DJ8/6922/7308 variants."SOME PEOPLE CALL ME MAURICE,

George,
I'd listen to WCW, on this. I'm sort of in the same situation that you are. From William's suggestion, I will be looking into an Odyssey. I was also looking into a Belles amp. I have never heard or read anything negative about the Belles gear, but have no personal experience with them. I've been away from the hobby since about 1993-94 and just got back into the "ADDICTION" late last year. I have alot of catching up to do when it comes to more modern gear. My last "NICE" rig consisted of Harman Kardon seperates and Advent Maestros(which I still have). When I was active, tubes were only reserved for the very wealthy and the lucky people that either inherited some old Mac stuff or found an estate sale or auction. Now, "quality" tube gear is readily available to the average hobbyist which, in my opinion, has sparked new interest in our hobby/passion for lots of people.
I have to make some sort of decision, soon, as to which type of amp I want to utilize, all-tube, hybrid, or SS."SOME PEOPLE CALL ME MAURICE,

Thanks guys,I too got back into the game, earlier this year, I am just overwhelmed with my newly acquired 1c's and L-1, I have been selling off my adcom gear and other items that are sitting around,so now I have some cash (thanks to the k-horn sale) . I appreciate the quick responces, I believe that I'm going to grab the Belles 350a and relax and enjoy the sound for awhileJC approves....he told me so. (F-1 nut)

Big Daddy to Big Louie, Maurice is leading you the right direction, 7308 and then the JJ, I have been using the JJ and they are liquid in the mids, not harsh on the top and can dig. BTW, my ELP with my 1C's goes very low in the Woodshed so you may be on to something with your listening room.
Of course you can always go to the next level, the MLP!!!
