new to forum, couple of easy questions
hey guys, i have a few questions...i am currently looking to build a home theater system piece by piece...i am limited with funds due to college...lol..im am looking at an onkyo 503, rti-8s or rti-6s to begin with...them later on get a csi-3 with some type of rears just not sure yet...i havent decided if it was worth the 100 rti6 or the 180 rti8...not sure if the difference between the two is sufficient enough to justify the price difference...im leaning toward the 8's though..i love the look of both of them..any comments on the above setup? any help or advice would be greatly appreciated!

if you're not going to add a sub, I'd get the 8s. If you're going to add a sub, you'll be fine with the 6s

i can attest to this. not much difference without a sub. even less difference with sub. if i could start all over, i'd get rti6's all around and save a few hundred dollars. but if money is not an issue, then obviously the 8's.

i would think the 6's with a sub would sound better than the 8's without, especially driven off of a receiver only, no separate amplifiers. jmo. I don't own the 8's myself, but i have listened to them without a sub, albeit in Circuit City's 'State Of The Art' listening area.

howdy as well.
Don't have too much personal experience on the Rti department but i am in college!
My college system is listed below somewhere...make sure to watch the bass anyway if you live in a dorm /small apt.
Not sure if it's my big heavy concrete block under my sub but no one complains about me....just my suitemates who are using small computer speakers...
if you're looking for a cheap sub a lot have used the one I have and been very please (I am one of them)
Also depending on your room, too small can be bad for certain speakers...so hopefully where you get them will have a return policy (maybe certain spots on ebay)...dorm rooms are small =(

503 eh....i got the 502 from fry's what price are ya looking at....I'm soooo money tight right now....*stupid audio electronics*....just kidding *runs to hug speakers...
seriously, well if you can't afford the csi5 then just go for the csi5...some will say save up until your satisfied with what you can get. Well my advice is don't listen to nicer speakers. RTi's are very fine for movies.
I see your building your system piece by piece. Just make sure not to cheap out on speaker wire. And at least some "decent" (subjective word I know) interconnects.
If your focus is Home theater I would get a sub really soon, and though a lot of people in this polk forum are very polk happy (obviously) a lot of them will support SVS and HSU and think that polks sub aren't that great. I would go with the sub I have or an Advent sub has popped up as an alternative.

A big question you need to ask yourself before buying anything is if you listen to movies more than music. I noticed you said home theater system but just to clarify. You can build a much much better sounding 2 ch system with a certain amount of money than if you had to build a full ht system with that same amount of cash. If you are not so much into movies I suggest you try going without a sub for a while. Pure 2 ch audio with no sub can be quite nice, plus you save money because you didn't have to buy a sub. My advice on getting a psw10 would be to just save your money and do without. The RTi4's, 6's or 8's should do great things if placed properly.
