Who has an active turntable?

When I started this thread I think I was spinning vinyl maybe 60% to 70% of the time. Shortly afterwards I disconnected the CD player and have been 100% vinyl since. What I learned along the way is that a ton of music exists that I didn't know about. Its easy to find a box of records for nothing and I always find a few real keepers.

I haven't listened to vinyl since around 1980...I had a ton of cassettes until around 1992...then made the switch to cds (about 400)....
now all of my cds are in my 60 gb iPod...
for me, convenience greatly outweighs quality...Pioneer Elite VSX-53, Polk RT800i fronts, Polk CS400i center, FX500i surround, Velodyne sub -

That's 90% of the reason I got into vinyl. I love picking up a box of mystery albums and thumbin' through them. You never know what you are going to find!
I didn't realize this was an ancient thread when I posted earlier. Kinda funny seeing some of the folks post 2 years ago that have now converted into true vinyl luvers (Troy, UNC,...)For rig details, see my profile. Nothing here anymore... -
I miss the art-work of a full size album. Some of those old YES albums were absolutely gorgeous. I just don't get the same feeling from a little CD.

I'm 70-80% normally, but have been 100% for the past few months. Moved, and haven't opened my box of CDs yet. That Sutherland is a religion, I keep hauling out old stuff I haven't listened to for years.
I haven't had much luck finding boxes of LPs anymore. They all seemed to dry up around here about 3-4 years ago. Most of the thrift stores even ditched their record areas or shrunk them to match incoming inventory, usually comprised of old folks cheesy stuff.

I have one album I play with. I use the Herb Alpert "Whipped Cream & Other Delights" to gratify myself.

Currently using an AR-XA with a Shure M91-ED. Looking to upgrade as soon as I can get the bucks together. I'm probably 50/50 vinyl/cd, but the vinyl absolutely smokes the cd's for sound quality.
-
Added a Rega P5/Exact cartridge/TT PSU to my rig. I listen to vinyl about 20% of the time (20% LP; 35% CD; 45% iPod). The vinyl is definitely the better sounding media.[

I agree...
It's just that blasted subsonic rumble which keeps me from spinning records all the time. I can't get rid of it completely and it scares the bejeezus out of me.I never had it like this where I grew up. But I send my kids here because the fact is you go to one of the best schools in the country: Rushmore. Now, for some of you it doesn't matter. You were born rich and you're going to stay rich. But here's my advice to the rest of you: Take dead aim on the rich boys. Get them in the crosshairs and take them down. Just remember, they can buy anything but they can't buy backbone. Don't let them forget it. Thank you.Herman Blume - Rushmore -
Lots of albums but an old Dual TT. Have not hooked it up even after the wife hounding me for years. I would like one of those new ones one day.Michael

i know what you mean.. but some receivers/pre amp's are better at it. i hooked up my TT to a Luxman R-3055 receiver recently before I sold it.. and the subsonic rumble was really bad.. i switched on the rumble filter and it took about 80% of it out.. it was ok after that.
Then I hooked up the TT to my Kenwood/NAD seperates and almost no subsonic rumble without any kind of filter turned on.. so it's weird when it rears it's ugly head.PolkFest 2012, who's going>?

Those getting rumble, are you using a direct drive TT? Belt drives seem to have very little problems with rumble.
-
I have a Technics SL-BD20 belt-drive turntable that I have been meaning to hook up. I was going to buy a phono pre-amp for it when I came across a NOS Sony integrated amp with a MC/MM phono stage build-in. I got the amp but haven't connected the two yet.
Even though the Technics is an expensive TT, it's not "cheap" at all. Planning to get some aftermarket interconnects, power cord, and vibrapods for it. -

you had to rub it in didn't you?
yeah mine is direct drive.PolkFest 2012, who's going>?

For every 100 LPs I listen to I may listen to 1 or 2 CDs or SACDs. I will go through spurts however. About a month ago, I listened to the CD box set of Led Zepplin's "Complete Studio Recordings." The funny thing is that while I was listening, the only LP of those recordings that I had available (demolded) was Led Zepplin III and that LP sounds like ****. It was poorly recorded and I can't listen to it; I have to listen to the CD. When I get to my LPs of Led Zepplin that all need to be demolded, then I will know better if they are bad too.
I've been thinking about just replacing my LZ LP collection with the new 180 gm releases of all the LZ LPs.
Anyhoo, no surprise here, I listen almost exclusively to LPs as a matter of fact since I got my turntable up and running the beginning of February, I've listened to over 180 LPs (not counting how many times I may have repeated listening to particular LPs) that's an average of 36 LPs per month. That doesn't seem like a lot to me. -

Found out a week or so ago that my subsonic filter on my pre amp had been engaged the whole time I've been listening to mine. I meant to tell you before, honest. When I disengaged it those mid drivers started to jump around like Daffy Duck. Only time it's really noticeable is on the lead in grooves. I can hear it, too, but not at levels where I feel like I'm doing damage to anything. I'm going to play around with (what I think is) the loading switch on my pre to see if that helps.Wristwatch--->Crisco -

What a disappointment, huh? It was one of the first albums I cleaned up when I got my record cleaner. That magical place called Bron Y Aur couldn't have been that magical........Wristwatch--->Crisco -
To be honest, the foundation of my house is a bit off... so I may need to just play at leveling the TT out. I'm sure the tiniest of slants could be the main culprit.I never had it like this where I grew up. I remember thinking, back when, that it sounded like **** then too. It's a bummer when really good music is recorded like a deaf person did the engineering & mixing. -

I have some sorbothane pods that you can put under the foundation to help with the subsonic rumble.:D -
I've got 2 good quality Music Hall tables that I use quite regularly. Then an old Technics direct drive automatic for sorting through stuff.
My most recent TT though is a little portable battery operated Numark (only $85)so that I can test out records at places that don't have a listening station. This thing is a must have for the average vinyl hunter.HT

What do you listen for on the Numark? It is very hard to determine ticks, pop, crackling etc. . . I've had my hands on perfectly minty looking records that sounded like a microphone in a bowl of rice krispies. -

Sorry for the delay. Haven't been getting all of my e-mail notices.
Anyway to answer your question.....It's great for finding new stuff I'm unfamiliar with, and also getting an idea of the actual condition of an album.
I too have been fooled by the appearance of an album before. The primary one that comes to mind is a copy of Pink Floyd - The Wall. Both the records and sleeves looked great, but that thing ticks and pops terribly.HT

I just hooked up my tt-Luxman direct drive pd270,with ADC arm and audio-tech cartridge.I bought brand new in late 70-early 80's.I was lucky I saved all 300 at least lp's.It sounds great and makes me feel old:p

I try to keep the old spinner active. I make sure he gets a couple of laps around the park on a daily basis.
Geritol and some gentle laxatives keeps him fit. Too much information?
On a less serious note, I visited a dealer in the nearest city. He really wanted to demo a CD-R he'd made. The source, he told me, was a buddy's high-end turntable. He dropped the CD in the player and pressed "Play." At once, the room filled with whooshing, popping, and crackling noises.
"Yep, that sure sounds like vinyl," I said, as I walked out. -

I can deal with the ticks and pops, at least a reasonable amount, however, when a record sounds like there is a mic in a bowl of rice krispies, that is where I draw the line.
I have a really, really great recording of Wagners, "Ride of the Valkyrie" that is a Sheffield direct to disk that is very crackly but the music and engineering is so good that I can just listen past the rice krispies. -
I'm getting to where I can pretty much ignore most noises not associated with the music. Good gear helped moved those noises off to the side and that made it pretty easy to ignore.

Well now that I have the space and an actual room which is in the formal living room, I'm in the slow process of building a 2ch system. Which will consist of a TT eventually. Maybe with in the next couple weeks...months
