I actually liked the late '80s early '90s rap. Naughty by Nature was a really cool group. Of course Run DMC, etc were good too. I also liked "slam" by Onyx, etc.

Today, I can listen to Snoop once in a while but that's about it...

    Rock is my favorite though.

There is a book out called "Yes, Yes Y'all." It carefully details the history of rap. If someone you read this book, or explored the history of rap at all, my guess is that your comments might change with your newfound understanding of the origins of this art.

I like all kinds of music, I listen mostly to rap.. R&B, some rock.. i Think the older rock is much better.. as long as we are bashing current rap.. Current rock all seems to be distortion and loudness.. I listen to the radio alot.. and when i turn to our local rock station 98 rock the quality go'd out the window, you can't crank it up.. its loud and distorted.. However lyrics aside for you non rap people, turn to a R&B/Rap station and alot of it is nice bass, nice highs.. and crisp. grant it cd's sound better than FM radio but if it sounds good on fm it will sound better on cd.. I even get in the mood for country when im drinking :D all music has its stereotype, country its losing your wife, your dog and getting drunk again, Rap is street life and bling.. some rock is kill yourself im a loser life is so tough :D So it all has its points

Having DJed in clubs the last 4 years, I can honestly say this stuff is JUNK!

RAP has no heart, no soul, no creativity, no nothing. Alot of people listen to it just to conform to society and to feel part of the "In Crowd".

Throw a Rhyme together that makes no sense with the customary "Yeah" and "N Word" stuck in every 2-3 sentences combined with an overblown bass "Thump" and obvious rip off of a classic tune, thus you have a RAP song. Let me give it a shot...

    "Yeah, Grand Masta J here.
Me and mah "N word" hittin da Polk thang
uhh uhh yeah, go boyz, hit da Polk thang
Woofuhs, Tweetuhs, we be lovin those power ports
uhh uhh yeah, mah "n word" lovin those power ports
In da lexus and da beemer
uhh uhh yeah, Grand Masta J and his "n word" be lovin to hit it in da beemer"

Thus you have a typical RAP song. The ONLY good thing about it, is watching some hot chick move her a$$ to it in her own special way.

    Let it die!

    Grand Masta J
    No excuses!

    BS

so is that what people who listen to rock do? conform..

It's in the eye of the beholder, does it have to be a musical masterpiece to still listen and like something..

I call it the way I see it and i've been seeing it for years.

How many times have you seen some young dude in his decked out rice burner, bee boppin his head to something that sounds little more than a loud thump with no possibility of understanding the words in an attempt to look cool to the rest of the world? Hey dudes, i'm pumpin my jams so loud that everyone can hear the vulgar language spewing to the rest of the world.

RAP is little more than a social status thing. Be with the in-crowd and do as they do so you appear to be cool and fit in.

Alot of todays modern rock is just as bad (not to be picking on RAP only). System of a Down....TERRIBLE! Let's scream and bang uncontrollably on the drums while our guitarist goes on a wild uncontrolled rage up and down his guitar. I shake my head when people at the club go "System of a Down ROCKS!"

Seeing it from my vantage point. No personal attacks on anyone here.

I like the old school rap. Stuff like the Fat Boys, Run DMC and such. The mixes of this type of music is often wonderful. I also like the Gangsta stuff, mostly older like Dr Dre, NWA and several others which I can't think of for the life of me. I'm aweful with names. Luckily they keep throwing them out while you listen...

The problem with modern rap worth defending, is that no one ever plays in on the radio, or in da club. Thus, you get all these poor generalizations of all that is rap, when only some is being represented.

I'm ok with older or less mainstream rap that simply samples small beats or sounds, and then a good DJ puts it all together to make a melody. And then have some meaningful lyrics over the top. I can see the tallent in that.......But this new mainstream rap, that is nothing more than an entire song, someone else wrote, with some blinged out **** talking over it is for the birds. I really think the major crime in all this is that young uncultured kids grow up actually thinking that the person rapping had something to do with the music in the backround. I hate it when some talentless losser gets all the credit for the work and skills of others!

    Just my 2 cents. :)

Now that is a very understandable outlook on modern rap. I can definetly see some of the new artist getting credit for someone elses music as being kind of foul in some instances. One thing I can say is that regardless of the sampling, I saw a special on VH-1 last night and in one of the shows interviews it stated that rap sales are 22% of total sales in music. That percentage came out to be billions of dollars. I had no idea that it was that high. The interview also stated that the sales were increasing more and more every year. Looks like rap is going to be here for a while.

Jimmy Dean was the first rapper. White guy from Texas. Recorded "Big Bad John" in 1961. Pure Gangsta rap (without the cuttin' and scratchin'). Pretty good sausage too.

Well now, while we are bashing rap i just have a question to ask to the people that probably listen to it alot more than i do. Why does every single rap "artist" insist on yelling out there name several times during all their songs and then most of the time spell it out as well.

??????? makes no freaking sense.... the only reason i can think of is that they know that the majority of their target audience is illiterate and ignorant therefore need to be constantly reminded of who they are listning to and then they have to tell them how to spell there name so when they go to buy there cd's they will be able to find them in that crazy scheme that most record stores like to use called abc order.
