The founders did not start out as audio engineers but as men with an audio hobby and a love of music who built their hobby into a career.

Sounds like a good answer. I was going to research the topic, but Klipsch's crappy web server isn't down with the whole "serving" thing right now.

Both were based on improving existing designs. Klipsch by folding in the external horns of very large theater speakers and Polk by combining euro technology of midrange and tweeters giving good mid and highs but no power and American design of the big woofer and and small tweeter with pounding bass but no real mid. Polk took the euro design and used the mid to drive a passive radiator for a full range.

or - and I am really grasping here

They both started as commercial ventures - Klipsch sells his speakers to theaters and Polk setting up soundsystems for concerts etc..

I think this is an evil ploy by Dean to get us to read up on Klipsch and browse their web site. He's trying to seduce us to the bright side.

Aaron, I think you are right. I started to sign on their forum as shack/polkhead and start the I demoed Bose® 201® Direct/Reflecting® vs some Klipsch and the Bose® blew them away thread. My conscience would not allow it!

What do they have in common? Hmmm, what are you looking for?

    MDF enclosures
    two-way designs
    magnetic shielding
    rubber woofer surrounds
    8 Ohm nominal impedance

Many more things like that, I'm sure, but something tells me you're looking for more of a "historical" answer... I give up.

...What do Klipsch and Polk SPEAKERS have in common?

    The answer is UNCOMPROMISING VALUE

Along with Magnepan and Paradigm -- Klipsch and Polk speakers both have high levels of quality for a more than reasonable amount of money.

The money is put where it counts -- into the driver and crossover components.

The quality of sound is passed on to us without taking advantage of us and raping our wallets.

I'm tired of listening to high end speakers that are emotionally un-involving -- and carry a price tag that requires me to mortgage my house or sell off my first born.

Shack's answers were very good and since I learned something I didn't know from virtually every post -- he gets the CD.

Shack -- email me at Sevenwescotts@aol.com with your mailing address. I'll send it out to you tomorrow.

Thanks - two were guesses on my part and may not be correct. Klipsch was born in Indiana and is in the Audio Hall of Fame. I dont know about Polk. All of the others are fact.

Believe it or not I have the original CD of "A Momentary Lapse of Reason". Why don't you have another contest.

I'll do another contest with the CD if you don't want it.

Would you take a $10 gift card from Blockbuster for your efforts?

Where did they build that big 'ol new manufacturing plant?

    Baja California, Mexico.

I believe all the current speakers are manufactured there.... with components from USA, Germany, China... etc., etc.

I know the contest is over but...

Polk speakers look bright (light shining off their glosy cabinets) while Klipsch speakers sound bright.

Sorry that was a pitful attempt at a joke. :D

Hey Shack take the $10 Gift card and send it to me. I love renting P&S movies!

Dean, this was a very good idea. Next contest?

Maybe the winner could get a burned copy of Metallica's Black Album? :)
