My parents called me Tuesday morning to let me know that their house was fine. They rode out the storm in TX and had some friends check on the house for them. They said that overall Thibodaux wasn't that badly damaged. Thibodaux is right in between Baton Rouge and New Orleans, but south. My dad said that they probably won't have power for a month, though, and cell phone service will be limited for a while.

    What!?

    That's pathetic...Hope they get their a$$es fired..

I did see the good cops literally throwing the trash out of the stores.

Foxnews was also showing video of the vermon breaking glass to get into the shops to loot.... One guy was dragging a moveable display shelf. That entire looting scene is a shame.

One guy was waving to the camera like he's a superstar...

Looks like the rats did come out and swim...

About 2 weeks ago my wife and I watched a show on discovery, they were talking about levies in Hollad and how Holland was built using these. They went on to talk about how this now mostly destoyed area was 90% complete with it's own levies. They said all it would take would be a tsunamie in the USA or a bad storm. My wife and I thought well it seems the engineers are all good and everything is under controle. Unfortunatly the TV show was somewhat right and we were wrong. You can rest assured we will do what we can from our end to help out.

Well yeah. However, If I was in the same position as those in New Orleans, It would be very difficult for me to leave my home. I'm not really sure how I would react. My stubborness often supersedes my intelligence.

I agree. With all the looting and the fact I do not own a semi trailer to take everything I own with me I may just send the family with most stuff and stay home with my guns-a-ready.

My neighbor has a boat and we live in a potential flood area. We agree we will stay behind with the boat ready and hope for the best while the family heads to safety. I do not want to incure a fine for protecting my property but I do understand how some people deserve to.

This was true. The mayor and police chief said their police/national guard had the authority to enter any business and take medicine-food-supplies- etc.... They were specifically instructed to take anything they deemed necessary because of the state of emergency. If they were taking other stuff, then yes, they should be dealt with.

Don't forget about that big earthquake that formed those nice lakes on the western side of Tenn. Read your history.
Actually West Tennnessee is practically another state and if it wasn't for The Blues, Barbeque, Peabody Hotel, St Jude's Hospital and Elvis we would probably just let Arkansas or Mississippi have it. And yes there is a fault line that runs down the Tennessee Valley right through Knoxville and we get an occasional rumble but for the most part we have very little in the way of "Severe" conditions in East Tennessee. An occasional tornado like the one that came within a mile of my house and deposited softball size hail stones (I still have one in my freezer) but that was 11 years ago. We rarely have much snow but often have ice because we are at the lattitude that is sort of a transition between the warm south and the cold north. We did have the distiction of being the coldest place in the United States for 1 day (including Alaska) at -24°. Generally nature is very moderate here.

And like MacLeod said, "Tennessee is the best place in the country to live." I tend to agree.

I just talked to my sister and she told me about one cop that was shot in the head by looters when he tried to disperse them. He's going to be ok, but they really should start doing something more serious about it. I heard on the news last night that the cops do have permission to use deadly force on looters, but it's not happening.

The western part of Tennessee is one third of what makes Tennessee such a great place to live. Tennessee has a little of everything, except for a desert and frozen tundra, to offer geographically. I like the west as much as the central and eastern part of the state. I've lived in Memphis, Nashville, and Cookeville and each section has it's strong and weak points, but the strong points outweigh the weak points by a large margin.

Now, if I could only find a job for me and the wife, sell the house, and convince the wife to uproot the kids from their schools, I wouldn't hesitate moving back home. I could get away from the monster-in-law, too. :D

I have no problem with someone making the decision to stay---just do so understanding that you are ON YOUR OWN. Don't endanger resuers when you have the means to evacuate, and you make the decision to stay and protect your "stuff." There were hundreds of calls for help from the very people who had the opportunity to leave and didn't. Now those who couldn't leave (no car, not physically capable, elderly, etc) have to wait to be resued, if at all.

This is really starting to sound like a good idea. Hell, fly me and my munitions down there and I'll make sure at least one block of New Orleans is free of these scumbags.

Wal Mart has a standing agreement with local authorities that in an emergency, police, fireman or rescue worked can break into any Wal Mart they need and take whatever goods they need like medicing, clothes whatever. All they ask is that they leave a list of what was taken.

Apparantly, the New Orleans police did just this in order to take medical supplies and some food and cloting and so people assumed it was ok to loot since the police were.

I also heard from a caller to a radio show today, his daughter is a Sheriffs Deputy in Jefferson Parish and said gangs are looting now and theyre using snipers on rooftops to take out any law enforcement that try to stop them.

This looting crap is almost overwhelming. Now the city has to remove the police force from search and rescue duties to concentrate on keeping order. Jesus Christ, this is like the Wild West. Armed thugs doing as they please. Is this really what a portion of this country's culture is all about? Yes. And people wonder why I feel the need to have a CCL.

Yeah! Let's shoot the rescue choppers! WTF

    Updated: 8:51 a.m. ET Sept. 1, 2005
NEW ORLEANS - National Guard troops in armored vehicles poured into New Orleans on Thursday to curb the growing lawlessness that included shots fired at a helicopter airlifting people out of the Superdome and carjackings of buses helping with evacuations.

The operation to bus more than 20,000 people to the Houston Astrodome was suspended “until they gain control of the Superdome,” said Richard Zeuschlag, head of Acadian Ambulance, which was handling the evacuation of sick and injured people from the Superdome.

He said that military would not fly out of the Superdome either because of the gunfire and that the National Guard told him that it was sending 100 military police officers to gain control.
“That’s not enough,” Zeuschlag. “We need a thousand.”

He said medics were calling him and crying for help because they were so scared of people with guns at the Superdome.

Shots were fired at a military helicopter over the Superdome before daybreak, he said, adding that when another evacuation helicopter tried to land at a hospital in the outlying town of Kenner overnight, the pilot reported that 100 people were on the landing pad, and some of them had guns.

“He was frightened and would not land,” Zeuschlag said.

Saw on the news awhile ago that 1,000+ rescue workers in boats are sitting around doing nothing. The first boats that went out to rescue people were shot at and returned.

Let’s just hope with all these pictures of people looting and such that after things settle down several months from now that the authorities hunt down these scum.

These people are quite lucky. They had several days warning that this was headed their way. Out here in CA we have no such warnings when an earthquake is coming.
