Heard from some Panasonic reps that they will be announcing some info on Blue Ray in December. Looks like the equipment most likely won't be arriving until late next year. Both HDDVD and BlueRay are going forward independently, meaning we'll all have to buy two players if we want to get all the movies that will be available. Certain studios are backing one, the rest are backing the other. It's a mess. I also read that the new discs, while being backwards compatible with regular DVD players, will actually have issues with scratching. Apparently, because the hi-def layer is so much closer to the surface, playback will be a lot more sensitive to scratches. No biggie for those of us who take care of our discs, but it will be a real bummer for those of us who mostly rent.

The ironic thing about all this is that it is the "everyday" consumer that determines what survives in the marketplace, not us here an this forum. I guarantee that the common dvd user never heard of hd-dvd, and will not care anyway.

There is already another format available that trounces both these formats- hd and blu-ray. Until the industry recognizes that easy and convenient outsells better and complicated, then all formats they spew forth will never make it. Look at DVD-A and SACD (better and complicated= dead or dying).

Take joe-shmoe consumer and show him a cd-looking item, his answer will be cd or dvd, or computer cd/video game. These answers are generic and expected. The consumer knows where to use each of these items even though they all look alike. If you tell him that here is a "beter" dvd, however you will need to buy a new dvd player and their collection of dvd's must now be replaced, I think they will laugh.

Do not give a consumer an more choices, make them accept the technology and use because they know nothing else. It is the only way. For this next format to even exist.

It does not matter which format wins, they are both doomed as long as the 300 million dvd players in this country will not play them. Only in the long run as these machines are replaced does this format have a chance en mass. By then 10 better formats will come along. I will not spend a dime on either format.

just get a Denon 5910 now and never worry about it. Sure it won't play the newer formats (that will probably be pushed back 2-3 more years) but it will take a reg dvd and make it HD quality. Done and done. ;)

DUDE!!! any person that does not see the obvious superiority of high definition is watching video on a small tv. my 65" hitachi magnifies every single flaw. sure, dvd on my 27" sony trinitron leaves little to be desired. it's near perfect. play that very same dvd on my bigscreen and experience true disappointment. fact is, high def is nothing short of breathtaking and miraculous! i got an oppo up-converting dvd player to experience "near hd" picture quality. i only have it until true hd dvd comes around. i'll keep my up-converting oppo to watch my regular dvd's, as i refuse to just pitch them in the wastebasket. true high def dvd may take long to get here, but the wait will be worth it when it finally emerges!!!!!!!!!!!...........spoken like a true professional!!

you need to see a 5910 on a Pioneer plasma then. I guarantee you cannot see the difference if the 5910 is properly calibrated.

My best advice with new technology......

Buy what you want when you want it. If your in the market for a new Tv, don't wait around for the NEW ONE, get the one you want now. Same with the DVD players. There are many excellent picture quality dvd players on the market.Buy the one that tickles you now.

HD DVD will take time to hit the market and start releasing good titles. Why wait around, next year there will be even better players.

Like computers you can't be completely current al the time. I have learned this and excepted it.

Stop waiting for the future and live for the now.
