New Truck Poll

Ok here it is again in a better form.
I am looking to buy a Ford or GMC with Gas or Diesel.

Gas is 1/2 ton and diesel is 3/4 ton.

If anyone owns one of these combos please let me know what you think of yours and what mileage you get. If you know someone that owns one ask them what they think.

I have read all the posts in the old thread so no need to repeat unless you want to.
Feel free to cast a new vote here though.

Thanks

While we have been comparing Ford with GMC we have noticed that the GMC comes with a lot of features we like.
Compared to the Ford Lariat or even the Ford Kings ranch the GMC SLT has many creature comforts that are not available on the Ford.
The Ford on the other hand is offering the employee discount on 2006 trucks ordered from the factory. This brings the price of the F250 down to the price of the GMC 1500HD with basicaly the same options.

    Decisions decisions.

We had a GMC work truck (dualie 3500) and now have the new Ford V-10, BIG difference. Of course it's apples/oranges comparison given the Fords HUGE V-10.

With all that said, I prefer my wifes RAM 1500 to both of them, both in terms of handling and HP. Now Torque and hauling capacity, the Ford has it in spades.

I am finding I am more partial to the GMC for overall appearance and features. The Ford has a better price.
We are going to the GMC dealer on Friday to have them build our truck on the computer and see just how much more than the Ford it is.

You can do that yourself on GMC's site you don't need to hit the dealer with all the high pressure sales tactics.

You can use the website, but it won't show the exact invoice. The invoices have dealer incurred charges, that are different in every region, like advertising, gas, owner follow-up, etc, etc... So just remember when you start talking to a dealer, their invoice will be higher than what the internet states.

On the GMC website it will only allow me to build a 2005.
Some of the options have changed like the Duramax now has 350hp/650tq or something like that. They updated it and call it the LBZ now.
besides I need to see how much I can get the dealer to drop the price if we order it.
Does anyone here know if the factory ordered price is negotiable or by how much?

To be fair to the dealer and you, I would offer them 5% above invoice and see how they react. If GMC is like Dodge, where diesels are concerned, they are limited to how many engines they can acquire. Therefore the dealers will want a premium for them. But I don't no too many that wouldn't accept an offer like what suggested. They'll still counter your odffer , just stand firm. If they let you walk, then go to the next dealer.

Thanks ND13, I know they mentioned I will have to wait for alocation if I want a diesel but the 1500HD will be easy to get.
THe wife and I are talking about getting a toy trailer and a few (3 or 4) quads to go camping and playing with so that is why we are still considering the 2500HD.

Good luck with your Truck purchase but I perfer Nissan. they last longer , get better gas milage. I have had now 3 Nissans and none of them spent any time in the dealer for repair.

    Xterra has 55k on it
Maxima had 100K or so on it I forget
My brand new Pathfinder se only has 2800 miles on it so I have no idea if there is any service issues. But with Nissans track record I feel safe.
I also was a Nissan Tech. I learned how they just don't brake down and last for millions of miles.

Again sorry I didn't help with the Gm or Ford purchase but wanted to give you alittle experience that I had with Nissan.

I appreciate the input but I only buy from American companies. :o
I know that the foriegn vehicles rate higher than ours but I am affraid that we will soon not have any produced here and that would be a very bad situation for our country.
Don't take this the wrong way however, I feel that everyone can drive what they want I just prefer to drive American. :D

I wouldn't worry about buying american. Nissans are designed and manufactured in the US (except the sports coupe, 350z I think). So your are still giving US workers jobs by buying Nissan, Toyota, or Honda. Actually if the Big three keep moving plants outside the US you could be hurting the US workers by buying from the big 3.

Besides, the big 3 need a serious kick in the pants to get them back on track and start producing vehicles that last (accross the board, not just a few models)

That is a good point. Nissan and Toyota are made in America and Dodge, Ford and GM are made in Mexico!

Still when it comes to a heavy duty truck that Im gonna use to haul stuff, its gotta be a Dodge, GM or Ford. And those Cummins and Navistar diesels are made in the good ole US of A (those damn Isuzu Duramax may not be).

I'm still going with the GMC Duramax. Like you say, they just look better. Absolutely a beautiful, classy looking truck. And the features are great. They're upping the output on the 2006 Duramax? That's awesome!

    Good luck with the shopping/purchase!

P.S I made a comment about gas mileage in the older thread.

Unfortunately the Duramax is a friggin izuzuzu, that sucks bigtime.
as far as buying an American built foriegn car or truck....I don't think so.
I do not feel for those who work for foriegn car companies her in the US because they received mucho dinero for opening plants here. They were bribed by our government to open plants here and they wanted to anyhow just so they could slap the "Made in the USA" sign on all the money they send back to the motherland. NO THANKS.
This my just honestly be the last vehicle I am able to buy without feeling like I sold out to the same people we were fighting just 60 years ago. The same people who took all knowledge we gave them and all the subsidities we offered and took the lead in the market.

As far as the foreign trucks...remember Frank Z's offroading thread a while back that showed the Nissan Titan's snapped driveshaft? You wouldn't have to worry about that with an American truck since the driveshafts are made of steel, and not aluminum.

    What's wrong with that Isuzu? 310hp @ 3000 and 605lb-ft at 1600. 6.6L Versus the Powerstroke's 325hp @ 3300 and 570lb-ft @ 2000. 6.0L
    Just for comparison's sake, Dodge's Cummins: 325hp @ 2900 and 610lb-ft @ 1600. 5.9L.

I must say it's pretty awesome that the Cummins is outdoing (though barely) the Duramax with quite a few liters missing.

Engine output for Chevy Silverado HD and GMC Sierra HD increased to 360 horsepower and a class-leading 650 lb-ft of torque.

    In case you are interested

Ford Powerstroke. I've never met an unhappy owner of a Powerstroke truck.
But if your only talking about pulling 3-4 quads in a "toy trailer", a heavy duty diesel truck is probably overkill. They are for pulling horse trailers and boats!

It probably is over kill for now but I will have this truck for 10 years or so and do not want to pass up any opportunities to upgrade the toy hauler.
Some of those toy haulers require a 3/4 ton or more 5th wheel and are real sweet.

Don't forget about maintenance cost. The diesel will cost more when it comes to oil changes. I bought a superduty f-250 with v-8, mainly for the crewcab. Could not jusify the diesel option, I don't have anything to tow.
If I had the option I would like to have a superduty with the cummins. Maybe when the gaser dies swap in the cummins.
