A lot of people at audiokarma have nothing but praises for the toshiba 3950/3960 dvd player used as an audio only cd player. Why don't you give it a try ? It's only about $50. If you don't like it you can use it as a dvd player.

Because it sounds like a $50.00 DVD player. I too heard all the hype and bought one at the local BB. I have a 15 year old Sony "entry level CDP" that sounded better. It is no where near any of the players mentioned earlier in this thread.

And for a few dollars more you can get several DVD players that will blow this out of the water for PQ. It was no "giant killer" in either category. I would have given it to one of my kids for their bedroom except they both have a DVD player. BB got this one back.

Given comparable players SACD's have better detail or resolution to my ear than CD's. Much better actually. How could they not given their higher rates? Its better software. A regular CDP machine can add its upsamples apply oversample etc. smoothing out curves, improving interpolation, keep away unwanted harmonics, and so on. So you need excellence in DAC's, chips, capacitors, circuitry etc., sure I believe in machines that can do this. SACD machines need good parts as well and have their own hierarchy. Dont these cost what most here would consider alot of money? Dont alot of us buy them anyway? Why? I will because the machine sounds better. So why would I not buy a disc that by its design is better? SACD discs can be had for 5.99, they can be had for 10.00, or 13.99 or 30.00, depends who, what and where you buy or want. All the SACD at Yourmusic.com are hybrid playing in any old CD player, their 5.99. I suppose this is known here, but sometimes I wonder.

I will continue to buy regular CD since as mentioned not all recordings are SACD available and I have my pre-SACD collection, but given the choice I will get the SACD everytime. If it dies so what, I have the discs/players to last me. I am a long way from being convinced though that they will not be with us.

Sadly, I cannot yet justify (ie really afford) spending 5-10 grand on a player whose reviews indicate it can do both type discs justice. So I will have two players, heck, I just picked up the Parasound 2000 to help my regular discs along. I figure you can get both players/gear, decent sound for me, somewhere around 2 grand or so. Your personal audio evolution is different, I am not really trying to convince anybody or change your mind, these are just my thoughts and what works for me right now.

I have a Denon DVD 2900 Universal Player and it is like night and day when compared to my old Sony CD player. I would highly recommend it. It plays every format I can think of. In terms of SACD and DVD-A, they blow away standard CD's. Anypne who says they are dead is dreamin!!

it is generaly recognised that SACD has the potential to provide better sound than CD this is a given truth. but there is no good reason to abandon the redbook CD format there are thousands of albums on CD that will never make it to the SACD format. who among us is willing to cater what we listen to based on the whims of the large record companys ? and lets face the fact that there are many redbook players that do sound wonderful! long live the CD!.............WCW III

And the winner is! Ok so I went with my gut feelings and got the Jolida JD-100 with Preformance Stage 2 from Sound Odyssey. Seem like nice folks. Now I have to sit tight for a week while they screw it togeather. I hope I made a good choice. It seems to offer all the right stuff and the tubes are sexy!

I know I'm late to the party, but I thought some of you might find this interesting. In regards to SACD and DVD-A; I remembered reading this article months ago in TWICE (This Week in Consumer Electronics) about how poorly the hi-rez formats were selling.

    http://www.twice.com/article/CA514801.html
(You may need to register to see the full article. Don't worry it is free.)

For those that don't feel like reading. It basicaly shows between 2003 and 2004, that DVD-A sales dropped 20% and SACD dropped a stagering 40%. Also "Their COMBINED unit sales fell short of vinyl LP sales."

Didn't give me a whole lot of faith in the formats. Besides, from the compairing that I have done, a good LP and turntable still easily beats both of them.

Man, I don't hate vinyl. I hate people who think vinyl sounds better than SACD, yet haven't listened to SACD on anything better than some entry level player. I also hate people who feel the need to proclaim vinyl as the second coming of JC and the funny thing (at least to me) is that it's only the vinyl heads that feel the need to do that. It's as though they are trying to compensate for something being too small.

As you know, I have tried to like vinyl, have listened to vinyl on TOTL hi-end gear and it just doesn't do it for me, but I have at least tried it on said gear and not a RatShack TT.

I hear you man, I hear you.....

As we've talked about, for me, a LOT of the attraction to vinyl is nostalgia. However, there are some things I vinyl that, IMO, sound better.

Pros and cons to each and to each thier own........but, vinyl is still a higher resolution format. ;)
