ATM Card troubles

This could have been MUCH worse.
Because in short customers rule. And I don't feel 100%.

Sorry not 100% recounted all related withdrawals vs. deposits I'm still short $58 bucks. I'm not crying over it, but that would be a nice dinner.
I still not 100% happy about this, due to the fact it was copied I still have the card. I needed to explain this to 5 people but I admit I got loss after the 3rd one. If other people here as had the same problem then this shouldn't be a new thing to a large bank like Wachovia, so I shouldn't be explaining / explaining / explaining then denying that I / none in my family has used the card to withdraw the cash. Now sitting here without an ATM card, as I havent received a new card and this card is dead. It's a good thing that I have the ability to work around that problem, but it's a pretty poor way to handle a customer.
BTW I used this card only once Saturday at 7:00pm in Home Depot the day before the trouble which happened at 12:36pm Sunday. So I 99% sure it was at HD or someone in line that day. What I don't know is can a card be copied by the face numbers or the face number are different then the back strip. Knowing this fact I know if it was someone in line vs. had to be someone working at the store. So again this whole experience had left a sour taste in my mouth.

Did they provide you with any information on how this happened or if it was a result of the breach in their system about a month or so ago. If I'm not mistaken, Wachovia was one of the major banks that had a lot of their accounts compromised. It seems they were more than willing to refund you. Glad this turned out like it did.>

I had no contact with them given me an update. In fact when I called in they told me they have never heard of this before. In fact she said an ATM card couldn't be copied, but stated also if it was my card would have be de-active when the copied card was used. So I then asked about to grocery store $25 thing if the system show this and she reply yes twice in-fact. So I then stated so if a withdrawal is done and my card couldn't have been used, there must be another card out there. I got no response a warm and fussy feeling for sure.

Hmm. Hate to hear about that, disneyjoe7. Tells ya what kind of condition this world is in. Sure is upsetting to know people can do that, and it doesn't help when Wachovia isn't at all helpful. But, it's certainly nice to know that you got your money back.
So, let me get this straight. Someone can record the data in the magnetic strip on your card with some device and then create a card with the same data in a magnetic strip? Can you use one of these cards without the magnetic strip? Meaning, can you use one of these cards (or 'steal' one) just by seeing/remembering the number on it? Or do you have to have the magnetic strip in conjunction with the number? Man, this makes me wanna just carry cash everywhere. Of course, I've always wanted to do that, anyways.George Grand wrote: »

No I know you dont need to front numbers with the strip in the back. The dummy card I believe with the strip programmed of a blank card, or reprogramming of an old card?
Well I know this can be done at gas station pumps reading the card data and recording your pin if used. So always use as a Credit Card not the ATM way.
I was able to view the last months translations and where I used as an ATM way due to machines reasons. Home Depot was one Saturday BJ's wholesale club was the on Friday. I thinks it was the HD because A.) Where it is. B.) Many people in line. So what I'm thinking can this.....
A.) A card is mark 1234 4567 8901 2345 is the strip the same way? Then someone in line may have seen the card and the pin used??
B.) The card is mark as above but strip is different 8901 1234 2345 4567 or something? If this is the case then it had to be on the card reader at the cashier. Let's face it some people don't make a lot of money and getting some card numbers for a fee is nice pocket change. It's strange to me that the withdrawals where $500 then $100 then again $100 then a (my god this is getting good for someone) inquiry of balance now as the $700 is the most you could get in 1 day.

if I understand correctly, a CC has a magnetic strip with a bar code transfered on it like a casset tape records music....all you need is a PIN # to go with it...easy enough to get....apparently....
that`s why a lot of places want the 3 # code on the back as insurance when you use it on line
I keep all my cash in my savings acct. , and transfer just what I need to use in my checking acct.......just because you never know...
clever little bastages..!!

It's all getting a little scary now a days, this had thought me a lesson. But I look to the bright side of this my wallet is much much lighter as I've removed all cards not needed on a daily bases. One license, one small credit line Visa Card life has gotten simpler.

The true scammers have machines that do nothing but read the card when it's swiped through it. The strip on the back of the card is encoded with the card number and pin, so when they swipe it on their little machine (no larger than a fist) they have all the information they need (aside from that 3 digit number on the back of the card that beardog mentioned.
The worst thing you can do as a consumer is to let ANY card out of your immediate site. 99% of the time I swipe my own cards, and I don't let the cashiers go anywhere with mine in hand unless I'm out eating at a sit-down (which happens to be one of the most popular places that these scammers pick up accounts).comment comment comment comment. bitchy. -

Brett,
So the copied card needs the current pin and card number to work? My thinking is maybe they could copy card number and make their own pin up.
If what you say is true then I been F'd in a restaurant which I use this card a lot for (Just look at me I love food)
But then again don't you feel that if a Good ATM card was had then it would be use soon after?

madmax wrote:Quite some time ago I heard (on a radio finance show) that you are liable for only $50 on a credit card so long as you put a hold on the account as soon as you find out.
This is the disturbing part and a reason why I do not have a debit cart. They said banks are not liable for money taken out with a debit card. Even worse, if it is tied to another account (like overdraft or whatever) it can also be emptied.
Is this true? I don't know. I heard it, didn't get any debit cards and never looked into it again.
madmax
I absolutely believe that statement, I out $58 bucs and figured that it's the first $50 I responsible for (Reread the rules BullSh!t) with the $8 charge in non W ATM machine use. That they haven't been reimbursed me as of yet, I'll be calling the direct number I have for someone about the $8 bucs, Monday. Its now more of a principal thing then anything.
So with a credit card this $50 thing is not so?

As far as pin numbers I haven't done a Major Banks ATM pin change in away so I not sure the system or method has changed, but at my Credit Union they just swipe card I enter new pin / reenter pin / then they re-swipe card.
So my thinking is if the Pin is say 1234 but is coded on strip as an offset number in this case 8766 so the entered number and the strip number must equal 10000. If that was true I'm don't know just assuming at best here. Then some could just swipe card they don't need see you enter pin.
Or can someone just see a card number and make up their own pin, never swiping card.
If it happened where I think it did, they call this area Crime Hills. Which because of this I will never use a ATM / Check Card again.
I'm thinking it can't be that easy but I wonder.

I'm glad to see you got your money back! BTW, I keep a Discover card, a Visa, a Mastercard, a Sears and an AmEx with no yearly fee. Good to have what you need at the time.
Here is a good thing to keep in mind. If your bank automaticly gives you a debit ATM card you can't just take it home and burn it and still be safe. Here is the key. You must call and set up a pin number. If you do not then anyone can call and set up the initial pin number for you. Found this out with no loss luckily.

FYI
For all that are using ATM cards / or had before.
Per what I'm been reading an ATM card can be made by the numbers in front of card / perhaps a cell phone camera took a picture while I was in line.
Then this person had seen me enter my PIN number in the POS terminal.
That is all the info he or she needs.
Got this info on a New York site explaining ATM crimes. Also read that a bank can take all money refunded back if you can't prove where you where at time of withdrawal or whatever. It just seems they have you by the Balls. I get paid every two weeks so this Friday I'll try to close this account and my relationship with Wachovia.
Since this took place Sunday at 12:36pm and this is also Sunday at 1:12pm and I havent left the house it's like a typical Sunday for me. I think I'm **** out luck proving I was home at this time.

Madmax,
You got me thinking so I checked my Laptop found a file saved about 3pm 8/14/05 so I thinking that won't work. I checked my Desktop for the same thing found a file about 7:19am (said to myself what 7:19am Sunday what I didn't sleep what) then it hit me you IDIOT you worked the weekend Saturday & Sunday 8-4pm DUH. It's been a F'd week, also work is a little strange I work Sat / Sun now not just Sat as we have done in the past 2 years. Been a long F'd week worked 12 days straight, with my $700 out had sent $636 in payments out. So I must have been Freck'd out myself.
Having a drink or 2 just because I must need it.
