DD OR DTS

G,day all, I am curious as to what preference if any does anyone have to either DD or DTS. I am more partail to DD as on most DVD,s it seems to have better sound seperation to each speaker. I have noticed DTS to be around 4db louder and smoother in sound but does not have the sound seperation of DD. Regards Fabian............Ps To all who have asked my back still sucks with pain hence my lack of posts latley but I am trying to keep my spirits up and deal with it. Aside of the usual daily arguments with the insurance company, MAN DO INSURANCE COMPANYS SUCK, life is going on. Kind Regards Fabian, The not so wonder from downunder

hang in there with your back man. my prayers are with you...
as for the DD/DTS - it really is DVD specific for me, can't say there is one all-the-time favorite...
there was a thread recently on this, probably missed it while you were out, here is the link:
digital or dts? -
You know at first I really liked DTS and preferred it over anything else. I some cases I still do, but I heve to admit there are quite a few DD5.1 DVD's out there that just plain kick ****.
For example "Training Day" will rival any DTS movie out there IMHO. That was one of the sweetest sounding movies I heard in a long time. From the dialogue, to the music, to the overhead choppers. Man that movie was just plain tight when it came down to the nitty gritty. Hell there was one scene where Denzel and Ethan were in a house and you could here the traffic outside, and a distant chopper flying by. I could have sworn it was all outside my windows. -
if you look at the specks dts packs more info so it should have a beter sound but like apple and mirosoft the beter one dont allways win out in the end but there is more dts encoded dvd out there lateley

the digital age old question, which one is better....................why can't we just all get along??Dan

dd/dts...which ever one sounds better. Hard to pick, but most of the time dts wins out.
Sorry to hear about the pain Fabian, my boss ,who had his back surgery 2.5 weeks ago is still in alot of surgery pain, but no pain from before the surgery. Get better soon bro.
Peace Out~:DIf...
Ron dislikes a film = go out and buy it.
Ron loves a film = don't even rent. -
I agree with Ron. My experience has been the DTS overall delivery is noticable better.
Most recently I did a comparison of the two with "Peral Harbor". True most DVD's do not come encoded with both options, but this did and the DTS selection brought me to the brink....................:D ................................Best surround sound-track I have experienced yet with the new HT set-up in the basement room!!

I prefer DTS over DD.
-
DTS......before......DD.......when it's offered on DVD!
dc. -
When you play a DD dvd the player shows a 448 kbps rate. A DTS dvd shows a 754 kbps rate. Now what does this mean concerning this argument of which sounds better? Dammed if I know, but I bet someone can shed some light on this.
joe -
Don't worry about the bit rate, all it means is more info. You deside if it sounds better.
I will tell you this, I like Dolby Digital over DTS.It sounds more natural, they rears and sub aren't as noticable.

I'm just glad there's a format that causes such competition for Dolby. Competition breeds good innovations
go DTS!!! -
Both sound formats are great,
DOLBY DIGITAL and DTS both have pros and cons.
Lot of people like DTS and I know why? 'cause DTS sounds more detailed due to less compression. It sounds good even in the cheapest home theater systems. Whereas, DOLBY DIGITAL is more compressed and sounds less detailed in cheap HT systems.
If you have expensive HT setup the DOLBY DIGITAL will sound more detailed too due to the high quality of decoders.
In reality DOLBY DIGITAL requires high quality HT stuff to sound better.
I'm not against of DTS but really get pissed when people say DOLBY DIGITAL is not good.
DD or DTS?

To say DD sucks would be a pretty irresponsible statement. I don't think HT would be where it is if not for Dolby.
Doesn't mean I can't appreciate the little guy for doing some things up on the empire like netscape/microsoft -
like i said not allways do the beter format win aka apple and the dream cast was way beter than the ps2 but not allways do the beter win. i have no faverites myself but i havent had that many dvd that were in dts and also my recever dont decode dts ex but i will have to watch some ov my movies agin and turn the dts
-
I love my dreamcast...it's a great system!

The fact of the matter is that while DTS is theoretically capable of "better" reproduction of a movie soundtrack, quality vaires from movie to movie. Because the reproduction depends mainly on mastering, along with many other variables such as encoder and decoder quality, you are not necessarily going to get the same answer with every movie you watch.
The Bitrate is the main and most talked about feature, however, other factors such as the compression techniques play a part as well.
I have given two links to sites that detail some of the differences and the difficulty in doing a comparison. The first link is from some guys website and gives a general (somewhat sloppy) comparison of the pros and cons. The second is from a magazine called Sound and Vision which has produced sound and impartial reports in the past. I found the Sound and Vision to be very well written and their blind test to be fairly well thought out and executed.

In the end, it is up to you to decide which is superior. However, like Ken Pohlmann states at the end of his article,
"Anyone with the DD logo on his system should not feel limited by it. Crank up your system and enjoy it! And if you've made the extra investment in DTS, it's pretty darn good, too - just be careful how loudly you brag to your Dolby Digital-only friends."Testing

Ok, I don't know why, but I can't link to that page. What you need to do is go to www.google.com and put in a search for "dolby digital vs DTS". The article should be the second from the top.
gonna try the link one more way, but you'll probably have to do it as above.

can`t DTS and DD just get along?
-
Hi Ted, you do not have to answer but I raised the subject to get an idea of prefrences if any......regards FabianThe Wonder From Downunder

I got into an agrument on some NG about how the compression is the only factor why dts is better than DD. I am glad no one has mentioned only that as their argument.
-
hey Fabian..jost jokes brother...I`m actually new to dvd but I have compared DD and DTS..I think DTS sounds great and so does DD..it`s really hard to tell...Pearl HArbor in DTS was amazing though...
