Another Silver dome replacement thread.

I've got some Monitor 5's that I bought new back in the early 80's. I've seen where it has been recommended to rplace the stock tweeters with the new silk domes due to the silvers being "harsher". Now, in my case I have lost some upper register hearing from too many nights playing guitar onstage without hearing protection back in the day (stupid, I know-but you don't think about such things when you're young) and I find myself turning the treble tone control on my old SS integrated up to the 3 O'clock position as well as on my old Carver receiver. Curious if it's compensation for my hearing or just the tweets getting old and worn out? I have another thread down below about my M5's and tube amps. The amp I'm looking at doesn't have tone controls on it, no self respecting tube amp would I've been told. Although these won't be my primary speakers for the amp I may like it enough to purchase another tube amp to run the Polks. So would replacement of the tweeters still be the way to go?

The 5dB spike at 12kHz to 13kHz of the SL2000 may, in fact, be adding to your hearing damage. The silk domes are smoother and more detailed without the edge.

You're right, no self respecting pre amp or integrated will have tone controls. Power amps only have a off/on switch.

I don't listen loud enough to really cause a concern anymore. Mainly backgound most of the time. I'll tell you though, a half stack at volume 3 and you're ten feet away is enough to do you some damage I guarantee. That and years of gun shooting when I was young.

I may have to try the new silks.

If you are already using tone controls to boost the high end (most 'treble' controls are centered around 10K cycles), the silk replacements might be too laid back in the top end for YOUR tastes. Some like it hot.

    Where in Texas are you?

My father in law is in the same boat as you are, and he likes the silver domes. At one time I had two pairs of Monitor 7's. One had the silver coils, the other had the silks. We A/B'ed several times. He always liked the silvers and I always liked the silks. My guess is that you will like the silver's better too. However there is really only one way to tell, and that is to listen to both yourself.
    Setup:
    Adcom GFA-545 amp
    Nad 1600 pre
    Dual 704 TT
    Pioneer 707 R2R
    Pioneer DV-578A Multi-format
    Polk SDA-2 Mains

another necro thread boy....what you trying to sell?
  • Nothing to sell. Own three pair of monitors and there keepers. Over time gone over these post but never post. Learn alot from you guys. A friend gave me a set of monitor 5jr+ and I said that there is no way a 6 1/2 driver can sound good. Well I was wrong. Read Mr. Polk story on how he stated the company then read what you guys said about the different speakers, then bought a set of 5b's then 7c early one's from 1984 with the oak veneer cabinets in mint shape. Run the polks with a few vintage receivers that I had since I was young. Own newer gear but never liked it. Gone through alot of gear over the years. I like to read about this kinda stuff. One thing that I all was wonder about was why people spend so much money on stereo stuff and always trying to find that perfect sound, when really all you have to do is open your door and go outside and hear birds sing or the river flowing or perhaps listen to the wind blowing agaist a tree for real clean sound.

So thats my story. If Iam doing something wrong let me know. Please could you tell me what necro means.
