Thank god I have a left mind as I disassemble anything and everything. Electronics, speakers, tweeters, watch out...- Not Tom ::::::: Any system can play Diana Krall. Only the best can play Limp Bizkit. -

Time to add it to the website... oh yeah... get stupid...
Left & Right brain failure - do not comply. To think, all of this started when my Polk RT35i had a problem with the xover...been down hill ever since. Sometime it's good to break stuff apart. Now one can see the simplicities of the sub and the possibilities of DIY with higher quality parts and better performance at nearly half the price.HT/2-channel Rig: Sony 50 LCD TV; Toshiba HD-A2 DVD player; Emotiva LMC-1 pre/pro; Rogue Audio M-120 monoblocks (modded); Placette RVC; Emotiva LPA-1 amp; Bada HD-22 tube CDP (modded); VMPS Tower II SE (fronts); DIY Clearwave Dynamic 4CC (center); Wharfedale Opus Tri-Surrounds (rear); and VMPS 215 sub

is that foam surround on the driver ?
-
Yes...
But do not fear, it would take a darn near nuclear explosion to pierce this thing. Everything about this driver is overbuilt. From the post, to the wire, to the cone, and even to the surround. It is about 5 times thicker than most surrounds I have seen!- Not Tom ::::::: Any system can play Diana Krall. Only the best can play Limp Bizkit. -
Yeah, and a paper cone too, so what?Check your lips at the door woman. Shake your hips like battleships. Yeah, all the white girls trip when I sing at Sunday service.

One thing about the SVS that even surprised me...
The end caps are like... 1.25" thick baltic birch end caps. Like holy crap batman! Extremely over-built everywhere. I'm completely and thoroughly impressed. Also would like to mention the sub weighs next to nothing with this driver out...hmm- Not Tom ::::::: Any system can play Diana Krall. Only the best can play Limp Bizkit. -
RuSsMaN wrote:Yeah, and a paper cone too, so what?
It just kind of goes against everything that we have been taught about a high class speaker??????
Wouldnt over time the paper cone as well as the foam surround just start to rot away. I have found so many speakers from way back in the day that as soon as you touch any part of the surround or the cone it just crumbles all to hell. Why would this not be expected for this speaker as well. Does SVS make there own special brand of foam and paper? -
The SVS has an impregnated kevlar pulp cone. And a very thick foam surround. It will outlast you and any other subwoofer, I am sure.
I can't believe you folks are talking about this - SVS has sold COUNTLESS amount of subs, and everyone knows they use foam surrounds and paper cones (PCi series) yet they continue to sell. Give me a break. Cant believe this BS... lol- Not Tom ::::::: Any system can play Diana Krall. Only the best can play Limp Bizkit. -
Paper sounds good, and impregnated with pulp makes it very rigid. Foam surrounds are not what they used to be. Beleive it or not, they are now very durable.
It's not a woofer, it's a bass piston.Check your lips at the door woman. Shake your hips like battleships. Yeah, all the white girls trip when I sing at Sunday service. -
I had never seen the inside and the makes of an SVS I was not sure if it was foam or not.
-
Yeah what Russ said. Paper impregnated with kevlar is very common amoung high buck sub drivers. Foam too, it's UV protected so it wont rot.Graham

HAHA -
Foam surround, cardboard tube cabinet, felt pads to stop the leads slapping against the cone, no finish on the cabinet, and a paper cone. For some reason, I'm not that impressed for $600.
-
My atlas is built a lot like the svs drivers and if you see one in person you will probably be a little more impressed. What's wrong with felt pads stopping the leads from breaking themselves off? Take apart some of your speakers and find out what they are really built out of. I was amazed at the crappy build of some of my stuff but it still sounds fairly decent.
-
The felt pads are not there to stop them from breaking off, it's to stop the noise as they slap the driver. It would be better to design it so they don't hit in the first place. And I have had all my speakers apart. None have foam surrounds, felt pads, or are made of cardboard.
Don't get me wrong, SVS makes good subs, but I don't think they are the bargain everyone makes them out to be. You can get a 300 watt BASH amp from Parts Express for $149, and woofer is only $129 form SVS themselves. So they are charging $300 for a cardboard tube wrapped in cloth. Where's the bargain? -
The bargain is, they wen't to school or learned all about subs, enclosures and business and bass for us.. are they suppose to sell them at actual cost and not make proffit? Alot of people can't build their own subwoofers or design them, for those who can.... don't usually buy retail. its the price you pay, Rti70's sold for 800 bucks, think it cost that much to build em? LOL
I myself think the cylinders look alot cheaper then the box subs from svs.. that's why they are half the price. I have no intention to take apart my pb2, i'll take their word its high qualityMY HT RIG:

Who said they shouldn't make a profit? But if we can buy the parts for $280 plus cardboard, you can be sure they get them for less than half that. Or don't you think they make any profit selling the woofers for $129?
My point was that they don't seem to be the bargain everyone claims they are.
As far as schooling, where do you think they learned about cyclinder subs? There is another company that has been building them much longer. You may have heard of them... -
SVS uses 1/4" cylinders vs. 1/8" Sono tubes you can get else where. (Which is also what HSU used(uses) These are special ordered and cost SVS alot of cash. The port tubes are now solid PVC, unlike mine.
The amps and drivers are top quality. I don't know of ONE OEM subwoofer built better than this... care to share?
SVS puts alot of money into R&D, they didnt steal anything from HSU my friend.
You cant compare DIY to OEM. Completely different area. Compare OEM to OEM.
Oh yeah... don't even show me a box subwoofer and tell me that is better...- Not Tom ::::::: Any system can play Diana Krall. Only the best can play Limp Bizkit. -
You must have missed above, where I stated that SVS makes good subs. All I stated, is that I don't think they are a bargain. Is that OSB on the bottom?
But I forgot that on the internet, you are only allowed to give glowing, positive reviews of SVS products, or you get jumped on. My mistake.
I have seen better built subwoofers, but you would disagree, lets leave it at that. -

No one really cares if you think they are a bargain. They are a stand alone class of subwoofers as an all around performance, built to last and all that. I don't know of any other company that can rightfully stand beside them other than HSU.- Not Tom ::::::: Any system can play Diana Krall. Only the best can play Limp Bizkit. -
When I took apart my PB12-ISD I realized that the build quality was OK, but certainly not high quality by any means, IMO. Not surprising 'cause of the price tag. But I'm glad I took it apart because when I looked inside of it, I realized I could do a lot better if I built my own. That's the value of DIY. SVS and Hsu offer tremendous value for their customers, as well. I typically take my speakers, CD player and amp apart, too, just to see what's in 'em. When shopping for a new car, you guys usually look under the hood, don't ya? As a consumer, I wanna know what I'm buying.HT/2-channel Rig: Sony 50 LCD TV; Toshiba HD-A2 DVD player; Emotiva LMC-1 pre/pro; Rogue Audio M-120 monoblocks (modded); Placette RVC; Emotiva LPA-1 amp; Bada HD-22 tube CDP (modded); VMPS Tower II SE (fronts); DIY Clearwave Dynamic 4CC (center); Wharfedale Opus Tri-Surrounds (rear); and VMPS 215 sub

So SVS and HSU are the only good subwoofer manufacturers?
It's all personal preference. I've only heard a couple of SVS subs, and personally, I don't think they sound that great with music, but are spectacular in HT. Not my idea of "all-around".
