To help a sort of novice out, what do these mean?? I want to better understand what some of the posts here mean (like when someone says the speaker doesn't image very well). After buying a DVD player about a year ago, upgrade fever quickly hit. I moved from 8 year old Polk bookshelfs/ passive sub to 25's to 35's to 800i's, and an old Denon Pro Logic receiver to 1801 to 3802 within about 8 months (yes, lots of sketchy and pseudo-plausible explanations to the wife). I'm 're-listening' to a lot of my music, and I noticed in 2-channel it almost sounds like the center speaker was on, so it made me wonder if this was tied to some of the terms here. (All the Polk material was a big help, too.)
Thanks!
- "Soundstage"
- "Image"
- Which part of the speaker is the voice coil and what does it do?
Thanks!

Dylan,
You've actually got a handle on one of your terms already;I noticed in 2-channel it almost sounds like the center speaker was on...
That's imaging.
Soundstage -The apparent size and shape of the three-dimensional holographic image created by an audio system. Should contain information regarding width, depth and height of images
My definition - The 'perception' of the size of the image. Does the music sound open and airy, not tinny or small or concentrated in one listening area? Better speakers produce a much broader, cleaner soundstage then lesser quality speakers.
For example, imagine listening to a band play in a bathroom, a garage, a small club and a concert hall. Each of these 'venues' would offer a different sound dependent on where they are. The speakers job is to reproduce this 'venue' accordingly to make it sound like it's supposed to.
Some speakers present music as if the band was always in the bathroom. This isn't good (unless they actually played there!).
Voice Coil -A wire coil at the rear of the speaker cone that works with the magnet to drive the speaker.
Item 3 is the visible part of the voice coil.

Yes, excellent, thanks a lot, Troy. This is great. I thought it was interesting when I had to put my ear up to the center to see if it was playing, and thought there must be some kind of term for it. And thought others might benefit, too.
Thanks! -
Troy, I was through Cincy yesterday. Would have enjoyed stopping and listening to the LSi's!Oh, the bottle has been to me, my closes friend, my worse enemy!

Nice job Troy!!
I hope he understood your post.Term's are funny when you get a room full of Audiophile's.At our store, we have guy's that have 100 thousand dollar 2 channel and up system's, and they insist on upgrading it, or really just getting something different.Once you reach the hi end market, there no where else to go.Like owning Krell mono block's,or Audio research Tube Mono block's, they weigh a couple hundred pounds each. 5 thousand dollar speaker wire and interconnect's.20 thousand dollar speaker's,35 thousand dollar speaker's, what the hell do you need to improve???I don't get these guy's, they talk about there amp's sound dark today but yesterday they were airy. Some call them dirty, muddy, tingy, flat, full, the list goes on.
