Looking for a low cost PDA. I was wondering which one is better -- Windows-based or Palm-based operating system? I'm specifically looking for the one that's more user friendly for basic functions such as word processing, phone book and calendar.

Thanks.

What do you consider Low Cost? (I have a old Handspring sitting around that uses palm software)
Other things you may want to consider are:

Do you want to link your PDA back to your PC and if so, what apps will you use. For example, if you are using Outlook for e-mail on your PC or laptop, do you want to have the ability to sync with your PC. This way, both databases are identical.

How many contacts would you have? (Personal, business or both)
The PDA should be a mirror image of the PC (IMO)

I have one that I sync to Outlook for personal use. When I go away, I just grab the PDA and all my addresses, phone numbers and e-mails are in my pocket.

Right now I'm merely interested in knowing which operating system is better. My main purpose will be to store Word files. I used to own a Dell Axim and din't treally use most of its features. Just wondering if Palm OS works better, in general.

palm Os works fine for just word/excel... the windows based handhelds are way overpriced if you just plan to use word... my wife started with a tungsten E, and now also has a zire 72 and loves it. has word, real player to play mp3's.. does excel, and a bunch of other stuff.. color screen

Pocket PC gets my vote. I've owned both, and it's more intuitive for me.

I would definitely NOT recommend the Life Drive........

The appeal of the 4GB HD is trumped by the fact that the thing is only running with 64MB of memory and EVERY time you want to open an application, you will be waiting 1-3 seconds for it to populate. If you don't think that's a long time, sit at a store with it for 30 minutes and go through the apps to see how you like it.

Even though the T5 has 55MB of operating memory, it's much faster since it's not hunting for everything on the harddrive and instead from the flash memory.

If Palm upgrades the operating memory to 256, I'll look at the LifeDrive at that point.

I have been very impressed with my PPC (Dell Axim X30). There are tons and tons of great apps available for PPC to make it a must have device.

I've owned both PPC and Palm and I highly prefer PPC.
