I setup a stereo shop for a Economics project. I think the products I picked were Polk, JM Lab, Dynaudio, Parasound Halo, Krell, Rotel, and I think a few others. I ended up needing a $150k loan to start up that business :D

    Fun thread.

I think really if you were to open up a "STEREO SHOP" there would be only 1 way to survive. That would be to carry high end. Otherwise you're more or less dealing with a large HT segment splashed with bitter 2 channel guys that would complain about selection. The market is saturated with these places now, old 2 channel stores that have gone the way of the home theatre to compete. There is however room for a smaller segment of high end 2 channel.

The brands would have to be those that aren't carried by anybody within 100miles of you, in most cases. I live in the outskirts of the greater Toronto area. My shop would have to be just on the outline of the GTA.

The reality is I'd love to carry more Canadian brands like Reference 3a, SimAudio, Classe, Bryston, Paradigm, Energy...but I can't these brands are already in stereo shops across most of Toronto. I'd have to focus on brands (american in most cases) that are hard to find up here and have a tremendous reputation among audiophiles on the net, audiogon etc...

I think with the brands I've selected I have covered a broad spectrum and haven't cross marketed my products against each other.

It would be fun to have 3 different rooms, the Ultimate being the Von Schweikert VR9's mated with an EMM Labs Pre/DAC and Orcale turntable. All connected with Moray James cables.

I'm surprised nobody mentioned analogue or turntables, you'd be shooting yourselfs in the foot really. 2 channel audio is becoming more and more rare and I think with the right service one could carry any high end equipment as long as their the only dealer in that area, people will come looking. If you're the only guy carrying a $11k CD player in the area chances are you'll draw from people over a 100mile area. When you think about it, if you personally were interested in a CD player that was of that calibre and price you'll drive (or fly) that extra mile or hundred in order to hear it.

I wish I had found this thread before I started business. We were moving into our new house at the time, and I didn't get a lot of chances to visit the forum.

Anyway, it was a good read and many of my premonitions were confirmed. There were several posts that brought new things to light for me, so I'll have to re-evaluate some things for the next couple of years.

The Shunyata PC gear is modestly priced, but their interconnects are ridiculous. The suite at Alexis Park(CES) was insane.
CTC BBQ Amplifier, Sonic Frontiers Line3 Pre-Amplifier and Wadia 581 SACD player. Speakers? Always changing but for now, Mission Argonauts I picked up for $50 bucks, mint.
