Is there really a lot of cool stuff on the extended versions?
I was really pissed off about the whole "extended versions" scam anyway and refused to buy it. Im sure I taught them a lesson.polkaudio sound quality competitor since 2005

I know this is an old thread but I just wanted to say that this was the first set of movies that I upgraded to the Extended Version. Typically I do not get caught in that endless loop of buying the gold version, plat version, 10th aniversary, etc.
However not only did the EV add almost 3 hours to the movies, but each movie had a huge amount of extras. Sometimes 2 extra DVDs of it! 4 to 5 sets of commentaries from the director down to the animators. Plus to top it off, the sound track went from Dolby Digital to DTS ES 6.1. OMG, what a difference.
This was by far one of my best movie purchases.
A review of just the Fellowship EV is located here:

To sum up that review, I will quote the last few sentences of the review:
"This is a stellar DVD release that is flawless from the first to the last bit. It is a must-buy, becasue this is one of the best DVDs I have ever seen! "Holydoc (Home Theatre Lover)

well since HolyDoc's brought it back to life - after watching these movies again I have to say I like all 3 of them equally; and all 3 of them even more so than I did before.
