I found a open box special at a local store for a Rockford fosgate P3 12 inch sub. Its selling for $115. The reason why its an open box special is because the concealment ring is cracked. This is the metal ring running around the outside edge of the sub. I'd like to know what everyones thoughts are on this. I have a polk DX12 now. Should i buy the RF p3?

If it's at a retail store that will still negotiate a little, offer them $80 for it. They will want to move that sub quicky since its damaged. They may or may not reduce it further, but it's worth the try.

Yea, i'll try that. Is a cracked concealment ring a big deal? will it affect the sound quality?

It'll make it harder to create an airtight seal, but you should be able to fix it with some type of epoxy or the like, I would think anyways. I haven't seen the crack.

sealing a sub to a box with epoxy = mucho bad... good luck getting it back out of the box :). sealing the sub itself is a different matter... perhaps post a high-res photo?

New question - I just came across another great deal for two 10 inch JL w3's with box included. If it came down to it, i was wondering what everyone would choose........one 12 inch rockford fosgate p3 sub or two 10 inch jl w3's (keeping in mind that i have a kenwood amp which when bridged runs 460 x 1 rms or 230 x 2 rms ) Let me know what you guys think

Id take the W3's over the Rockfords but Id take the Momo subs over the W3's. In their price range theyre the best you can get.

While I've never heard the P3's, or listened extensivly to the Momo's, I am currently running to 10" W3's, and not too blown away by them. They sound ok, nothing special, they can get pretty loud though. Judging from polk's reputation, I'd say go with them. The DX sub you have will be hard to beat.

the jl W7 is often considered to be the reference for subwoofers, but you can't really pick a single reference... some subs are designed only to sound really good, some only to get really loud, some are made with a bit of both... i'd say the w7 is a good reference in that last category, but there are definitely better-sounding subs, and most certainly louder ones out there...

i'd also consider diamond, eclipse, and adire, amongst others, to be TOTL

i would personally choose the polk. what i think you should do is hunt down a dealer that has at least two of those three and listen to them all, for a long time, and pick the one you like the best, because your ears aren't the same as mine.

for example, i find many subs to be very annoying - i can hear a buzz in addition to the tone, which most people can't hear, so i demand a sub that has an ultra-smooth suspension... you may prefer a different style

JLs are at the top of the price range, not the top of the line...its 2 very different things. you will not go wrong with polk

well the thing is that someone i know is selling 2 10 inch jlw3's with the box included for a real cheap price. I figured this would be an upgrade from my one 12 inch Polk DX sub. I figured this would be more efficient seeing that i'm currently overpowering my polk dx by about 60 extra watts

well, take a listen to that setup, then listen to the other setups you're looking at (or as close to them as you can get), then make your decision... hearing it is what it all really comes down to

resonant engineering's RE8, their smallest and lowest-end sub, but a remarkable performer nonetheless... i use one for my dorm system, it's quite nice... it even managed to keep up with four bookshelf speakers in a large lounge room when we had a party there, it's good stuff...

Right now, the amp I have on my Jl's is the same one you see for sale in my sig. It was running bridged to the DX in there as well, but i wanted a little more output. The one worked fine in my car, but not what i wanted in my truck.

Id take a Momo sub over most any sub costing under $400.

Youd have to get into the W6, W7, IDMAX territory before you outdo a Momo.

Ive been to Tweeter several times listening and comparing these subs to Alpine, Eclipse, JL, MB Quart, Kicker and the Momo is outstanding. Very smooth sounding. Not the hardest hitting but the best sounding.

Cant argue with that. The IDQ is a pretty sweet sub.

It does have an advantage over the Polks cause it works in a much smaller box which makes installation a little easier. But it cant handle as much power and I trust the Polk's build quality a little more.

Is the momo sub a big improvement from the DX or are they pretty similar sounding? I have a dx now and i don't know if its worth it to buy a momo

it's a personal choice - if you feel that the momo sub sounds better enough to justify the money spent, by all means do it - we can't tell you that.

I didn't mean putting epoxy between the sub and the enclosure:rolleyes: . I meant fixing the crack in the retainer/concealment ring.

Tweeter and Fryes are the only retail stores that sell the Momo line I believe.

Ordering online isnt a problem as long as you stick to an authorized dealer. Crutchfield.com is the more reputable. They are huge with the full backing of the manufacturers and they have an outstanding reputation for honesty and customer service. The downside is theyre not any cheaper than retail.

Sounddomain.com is my favorite. They are almost as big as Crutchfield and have a great reputation as well. Plus theyre a good bit cheaper than retail. Ive ordered from them before and had no problem.

And my personal opinion is the Momo sub is Polks best sub yet.
