my summer beer experiment

You know I'm a beer snob. (Among the other kinds of snob I is.) Nothing Anheiser Busch shall cross my delicate lips. So, usually I'm drinking serious beers, stouts and porters; beer with taste and heft.

This summer, I'm only drinking Rolling Rock.

Why?

Well, I never have luck when I go into a bar and say, "Gimme a beer." Whatever it is I order -- Negro Modelo, Old Dominion, even lame old Sam Adams, etc -- it never arrives COLD. C-o-l-d. It always arrives sort of not warm, but never COLD. Never thirst quenchingly, satisfyingly cold. Never. I even say to the bartenders, "Gimme a beer, a cold one," and I still get a beer that must have just gone into the fridge about ten minutes before.

Then my friend Emily declared that she never has this problem. She orders a Rolling Rock, green bottle, you know? And the beer ALWAYS arrives satisfyingly, thirst-quenchingly COLD. Rolling Rock is always COLD.

So this summer I have been drinking ONLY Rolling Rock.

And so far, I have never had a non-cold Rolling Rock! Every beer I've had this summer, every Rolling Rock, has been super cold and satisfying! Hooray!

How can this be? Green glass? Rolling Rock's beer chemistry?

Opinions?

Maybe the fact that no one but sissies and women drink that swill so it sits in the fridge longer?

But say what you will, Rolling Rock is always COLDER. It is!

A truly good beer doesn't need to be on the edge of freezing cold.

I can't drink beer that's above 45 degrees without wanting to heave. That being said, I'll send back a beer that's not cold enough, preferably just above freezing. And I would have to say that I'm an "any alcoholic drink" snob.

    Jack Daniels=rotgut
    Bacardi=rotgut
    Cuervo gold=rotgut

as far as bourbon goes, it has to be Wild Turkey 101 or barrell select(110 proof), Maker's Mark, and a few other rarer Kentucky bourbons.

As far as rum goes, anything from Puerto Rico is rotgut, although I should qualify that by saying that there may be some rare one I've never heard of. Rum from Jamaica like Meyer's dark is tasty. Appleton's is very good.

Tequila's, let's start with Sauza Hornitos, the smoothest I've ever drank. There's quite a few lesser known brands that blow Cuervo away.

I can't drink scotch, not even the best single malts out there, it must be an acquired taste that I just can't seem to acquire.

    Same with Irish whiskey.

Then there's the blends like Crown Royal. That's the only one worth mentioning.

Beers, well there's just not enough time in the day for that one.

Vodkas, it's almost a joke now with the vodkas. There's just too many new vodkas that have been imported or just conjured up to keep up with them all.

I used to have the same problem. Even when I'd order a pint, it never failed, I'd get the glass that just came out of the wash and was warm. I solved that problem by ordering everything in a frozen mug. Not everyplace has the option, but I ask anyhow and have enjoyed my COLD beer ever since.

My beer of choice has been Shiner Bock since I moved to Texas. It's a dark beer without an overly rich taste of many other dark beers.

The green glass bottle is specially treated. It's hand blow by tiny artisens in a field populated with big round rocks! I dunno maybe the green glass has some UV filtration chracteristics that allow the beer to stay colder.

If the beer is stored in alphabetical order in the 'fridge that would put RR towards the back....everyone knows it's colder in the back part of the 'fridge.

Specially lined caps???? Super thermal white labeling????

    Hell if I know.....

Pretty good beer if you ask me

Micah, Micah, Micah....man, I know you, you don't drink this stuff, say it ain't so. You've always had good beer taste, now this.

Rolling Rock is in a special class, the class for the gifted, along with Bud, Coors, 2001, MGD, you know, the nasty, bland, boring, tasteless class.

I don't mind Rolling Rock - I had a Rolling Rock summer a few years ago, although not for such a scientific purpose. Just got in a kick.

But regardless, why don't you buy a few of your favorite beers, either singles or six packs, throw em all in the fridge for the same amount of time, and see if any taste "colder" to you?

I wouldn't run this experiment all at once, because the last one probably won't matter... :)

Patron Silver Tequila (expensive as hell!)

    Belvedere Vodka

    Hennessey

    Crown Royal

I drank that Patron Silver when I went to Atlanta in March of this year. One glass gave me the feeling I was looking for without burning the hair off of my chest.

Yes, there are many good vodkas and a few GREAT ones. It's just that everyone from Eastern Europe, Russia, and even France are making some type of vodka now. Did I miss something, or was there some shortage of different vodka brands over the last 5 years?

    Okay, this is good.

Listen, listen, I know that admitting I'm drinking Rolling Rock has upset some folks who know that I would usually never drink anything piss-like. But... This is just an experiment.

Plus, in Baltimore in the summer, you crack crabs. And you can not crack crabs with some serious beer, like Shiner Bock, for instance, which is very good. It's too good for messy summer picnic table eating; too good for spicy Baltimore crabs. You gotta have a water-beer. I have been known to drink MILLER LITE while cracking crabs. Rolling Rock is heads and shoulder above that pee, at least give me that. Nothing is better with crabs than ice cold beer, and so far Rolling Rock is the ice coldest.

My favorite beer this past year -- just to set all your little minds to rest -- has been Brooklyn Brewing's Black Chocolate Stout: rich and malty and thick, like Guiness only really delicious! And fine even if it ain't ice cold, in fact better when it warms up in your hand. Chocolatey!

    But, that's a real non-summer beer.

So, Rolling Rock. The Coldest Beer In The World.

Listen to this: Emily (the friend who proclaimed RR The Coldest Beer In The World) says that if you leave two beers in the freezer and one is a Rolling Rock, the other beer will always freeze first. 'SPLAIN THAT!

Maybe Rolling Rock has a higher alcohol content and therefore takes longer to freeze??

Shiner bock is my favorite beer, in the other thread I said amberbock, but I am a moron, I meant Shiner. However I have long since switched to Bud light. For one reason and one reason alone. When you go to a bar or resteraunt, they ALWAYS have Bud light. I never have to try and figure out what to order just because they don't have Shiner's.

I like the whole, "What kinda beer ya got?" thing.

I make waitresses go thru the whole long list: "Bud, Bud Light, Bud whatever, Anheiser Busch whatever and ever..." That whole list of "beers" (or, really, watery carbonated hop beverages) that are all pee in a bottle. Then I say, "Got Sam Adams, at least, some effing thing I can DRINK?"

Then they probably spit in my food.

phleeze! who considers themselves a serious lover of beer would ever drink a Rolling Rock? Honestly, c'mon.

it's like those lite beers. all of them suck.

I do kind of do like the Budweiser Select. had that a few times.

for good all around party drinking beer.. you gotta go with the Canadian ones. ;)

I'm not a big fan of beer in general. Actually I like the taste but it's just too filling. I much prefer Vodka Martini's. I do like Hacker Pshor (German) not sure of the spelling. Blue Moon is excellent for a hot summer day. Amber Bock is good as well. Killians and Foster's and a local (Wisconsin) favorite New Glarus Spotted Cow. Red Hook is another. Oh and Watne's too.

We have a brewery here in town that has some excellent FRESH brews which are just awesome. Fresh & Cold is the only way to go. I just can't sit down and drink a bunch anymore. To filling and too much gas. 2-3 brews and I need to switch to mixed or a martini. That's just the way it is.
