How do you get rid of a woodpecker?

If anyone wants a reason to hate wood siding, I'll give you two..

1) Carpenter Bees
2) Woodpeckers

Carpenter Bees go in the wood...and turn...and hollow it all out...

The Woodpecker peck out their tunnels and eat the lil punks... what does this lead to?

Lil designs in the siding... now, I know your thinking...WHY NOT GET VINYL siding? Well...its expensive, good reason huh? So for the time being, I am just doing constant maintence on the house putting clear caulk in the holes so he has some difficulty...which has worked so far as he is leaving the spots I worked on, but he is going to others...so what are ways to get rid of the lil punk?

Any humane, in-humane ways to get rid of the thing?

Anything is helpful...thanks

Sid, someday when you get a little older, you will find a nice girl and appreciate having a woodpecker.

I'll third that, but if you want to do it a little quieter, get a big ole alleycat and let it loose under the tree. If it doesn't run away, it'll eventually make it's way up the tree and bye bye birdy. Oh and it helps if the cat hasn't eaten in a couple of days.;)

Get rid of the food source. Stop fighting the wood **** and call an exterminator to deal with the carpenter bee/ant problem.

I saw this coyote on t.v. try to do it with a bunch of stuff from ACME.
Maybe you can hire him, he seemed to have a lot of good ideas.

Oh never mind, that was a road runner.
    My bad.

Trust me, we've done this... it is kind of hard to fight an enemy that lives around the entire perimeter of your house... the only way to get rid of carpenter bees is to spray the posion in their hole, then plug the hole...

Kind of hard to do this when they are everywhere... we really need vinyl siding...

From the following website pertaining to N.C. These are federally protected birds! LOL! Better can the shotgun idea :D

    http://www.ces.ncsu.edu/mecklenburg/depts/hort/wild/#WOOD%20PECKERS
"WOODPECKERS BANGING OR MAKING HOLES IN THE HOME REPELLENTS Mostly ineffective

Tanglefoot ( a non-toxic sticky compound available in most hardware and garden stores) can be placed on tar paper which has been tacked on to the structure where they are attacking. OR hardware cloth could also be tacked over it. However, the birds may just move further down.

Flashy objects (aluminum, mirrors), plastic snakes or owls, can be placed as a deterrent but they have to be moved several times per week.

    CONTROL

They are federally protected birds. Lethal methods are illegal. Woodpeckers "attack" a home for several reasons:

they may bang against wood or metal as a sounding board to intimidate other wood peckers

if they are making many small holes (1/4 inch) in wood, they are probably seeking insects.

if they are making large holes (3 inches or greater) they may be making a nest

If they are damaging wood, contact a carpenter to see if the wood is sound. Decayed wood is great for bugs and for nesting. Replace wood.

Refinishing and coating the wood with paint may help. Bird netting or wire mesh could temporarily be placed between the eaves and the wall to keep them out of a certain area."

Notice the "mostly ineffective" qualifier for repellents. I think madmax is correct :D

Their life span is about 10 years. He should be gone by June 25th, 2014.

As a matter of fact the ones attacking my house lasted from about 1994 until 2003. Seem to be gone now...

Well... if he comes within distance of me harming him...he better believe he'll have a much shorter life than 10 years... he could be a bald eagle for all I care..but when he is pecking right outside MY ROOM at 6:30 EVERY MORNING...he is going to get something removed....

He dosnt like having his holes covered up though, which is actually a somewhat good thing he is knocking a hole in the siding..if I could just catch him when he starts it and I could just put caulk all throughout the tunnel in the siding before he breaks it all up...kill two "birds" with one stone...

But I thought the carpenter bees were bad...I guess I hadn't seen anything.

Maybe mix cayanne pepper with vaseline and squish it in the holes.
