Also, billbill, what did you mean when you said you iPod acted fussy when you tried connecting it to multiple computers?
Its not that big a deal actually. It prefers one computer to sync with and if you hook it to another one, it will warn you and ask you if you want to sync. Usually you will only want to sync with one computer and manually add files with the other computer. If you aren't careful and read the warnings, etc, you could erase part of your Ipod collection and have to re-upload them which is a pain. This happens because syncing will erase songs that are not on the computer.
About the the service tag, if it isn't under a flip up panel, then it will be on the sides or the back. Its not the same as the Windows COA sticker, that is a much longer code. For rig details, see my profile. Nothing here anymore... -
Well gents,
Thursday I took the iPod home and started playing around with it. I used my PC at home, as I determined that would be easiest. I have since loaded my entire CD collection, no problem.
Then initial upload, which was 1260 songs, took about 1.5 hours, but who cares?!
It has all worked out just peachey...:D
So, once again Polkies, thanks for all the advice.Bob Mayo, on the keyboards. Bob Mayo. -

Glad you like it. What encoding rate did you use when you imported/compressed your CDs? I find 160Kbs to be the best comprimize between sound and file size. With a 20GB player, you don't have to worry about running out of space anytime soon. For rig details, see my profile. Nothing here anymore... -
Yes, I too used 160Kbs. The initial 1260 songs took up ~6.20 Gb, so I'm not worried about ever running out of space.
One interesting thing I noticed about the iPod. My 20 Gig iPod will actually only hold 18.5 Gb worth of music. I can understand why, the OS has to been in there and so forth, but Apple calls this thing a 20 Gig device. That almost borders on false advertisment. But that is grasping at straws, the little thing is the coolest gadget ever.Bob Mayo, on the keyboards. Bob Mayo. -

This is a common problem with storage devices. They advertise a GB as 1,000,000,000 bytes or 1000 megabytes, which is correct in one sense, but the actual number that an OS recognizes as a GB is slightly different (1,073,741,824 bytes), which is 1024 megabytes. Its not really false advertising, but it shows the difference between binary numbering system and base 10.

Congrats on the ipod. From what I've heard they are pretty nice. Hard drives are always rated more than they actually hold but hey 18.5 gb should be enough...
On the topic of apple I started using iTunes a few days ago to boost up my collection of music on my computer. I must say this program completly wastes windows media player. I've been ripping my music at 320 Kbs since I want quality without the burden of exact copies that are full size files. I'm up to 750 songs and have about 150 cds to go . -

Sooooo true....
My next move will be to get a new CD player for my car, and get the iPod interface to plug the iPod into the CD player.
Here is the setup I'm currently looking into:
