decided to listen to some of you guys and get the Jolida JD 100. I looked on Audiogon and found this listing

http://cls.audiogon.com/cgi-bin/cls.pl?dddgtlplay&1122854986&demo&3&4&

great feedback. called him and placed an order for a silver Jolida. He said it will come straight from the factory, and cost 780.00 shipped. seems like a good deal. Hoping i'm right. seems the company name is Underwood Hifi. anyone heard of them?

Wally is a top notch dealer and will treat you right. I've had several outstanding deals from him.

Congrats on a very nice cd player. I love mine and get ready to roll some tubes in her because the stock chinese tubes do it no justice. I never thought different tubes in a cd player could make such a difference but boy was I wrong!

Awesome deal! I just paid $600 shipped for one on Ebay. Had several extras though but if I'd known about this I would have considered it.
If you want a fine sounding tube for the Jolida check these out:

    http://www.upscaleaudio.com/product.asp?itemid=42&catid=40
They absolutely kill the stock Jolidas and are also way better than the Sylvanias Upscale Audio offers. (The G.E.'s and Sylvanias were part of my 'extras')

BTW, for those interested in the Music Hall CD-25, I was offered one for $465 shipped from Wally. That beats any other price you'll find by a long shot. Definitely a stand up guy.

P.S. Your speaker cables were mailed today USPS. Shipping cost more than I thought though so they're coming snail mail :( You'll like the box though. If you have a dog he'll think it's for him :D

    Lou,

Good deal. In addition to rolling some tubes (I like the Ei Elites best) make sure you Dynamat any bare metal surfaces inside and upgrade the power cord.

    Cool.

Yeah, Wally is a class act. I went to visit him a few months ago. He operates out of his home. He was extremely informative and tells it to you straight. His main setup was pair of gorgeous, reference 100 lb. ea. Onix speakers that had the beauty of golden marble. He's one of the owners of the company that makes Onix gear. After the visit, I purchased my Onix Rocket sub.

Hell, we oughta make us a special topic on the forum for Jolida owners.:p

i figure i'll upgrade step by step. I want to see what she'll do in stock trim. Tube rolling will definitly be in my future. F1, i'll definitly keep that dynamat trick in mind. I forgot that i could upgrade the power cable too. My plan was to keep this player for a while, i guess that isnt going to be much of a challenge :D

thanks for the feedback on underwood as well. Wally seems like a stand up guy worthy of the feedback he has on audiogon. i dont think he has one negative. I'll keep you guys posted when i get it.

The stock Chinese tubes in the Jolida are crap. An inexpensive pair of EH or Sovteks make a world of difference. Ditto re the dynamat and the power cord.

Yeah, definitely upgrade the power cord. No need to spend a fortune on it. Consider Signal Cable. And Troy's right, so change out the tubes immediately. The cost is nominal, but the difference is a significant one.

Looking forward to reading your first impressions on it. When do you expect it to arrive?

Nice grab, I heard the unit at polkfest SC, not likely to forget its sound anytime soon. Its on my "list", and yea, I am a bit envious!!

Anyone get the modded unit from Wally? Seems like a decent deal at 1200.00 or so considering time spent, but wondered if anyone has heard one?

You can save a ton of dough by purchasing the parts yourself and having a competent technician do the mods locally.

I have the Level 1 mod from Underwood Wally on my Jolida cdp. The mod is done by Parts Connextion in Canada. This is the same dude that ran Sonic Frontiers.

I haven't compared the modded Jolida to a stock one but the modded one is one of my favorite cdps. I also have a Cal Audio CL15, Myryad, and Rotel.

I like the Sylvanias that Upscale Audio offers and is what is in my player right now. Close second is the GE 3 mica spacer blackplate 5751 tube which is a little warmer. Next would be the Ei Yugo elite which is a little warmer than the Sovtek LPS. I have also tried the new EHs and the SEDs. Really depends on your amp and speakers I have found through rolling tubes which one sounds best in your system.

I do not know what dynamat is and I can assume what it is or what it is for however I would like to know for certain. Thanks, I prefer clarity in a situation such as this.

Ah ok, here is a link. http://www.dynamat.com/

It is a damping material with multiple applications. I like to use it to line the covers and any other bare metal areas in audio gear. It helps stop vibrations from affecting the electrical components. It's also useful on stamped steel speaker baskets to stop ringing. Basically, any metal surface that when stuck with your fingernail results in a "ringing" sound will benefit from Dynamat, IMO.

I like to use Dynamat Xtreme because it has a thin metal liner that works well in high heat appications. You can get it here, http://www.thezeb.com/p-Dynamat-10435-Xtreme-Door-Kit-101591.htm

I hope that helps, if you have any other questions, just ask.

I got the Jolida yesterday. I got some Groove Tubes gold series to replace the stock ones. I'll order others, but these were what i had available. I'm a little upset at the moment. The player works well, seems to sound fine, but lifeless is the best word i can describe. kind of nasally, not as smooth per say as the Toshiba 3960 it replaced. I currently have it playing on repeat and will do so all night, hoping that this will improve with break in. I cant see not being able to get this thing to sound right on my system.

will this thing loosen up after break in???

No seriously, just let it play like you're doing and let the tubes and player break in a bit. Then if you still don't like it I'll buy it for half price ;)

If you want to pay up the butt, www.triodeelectronics.com has the 12AX7 Ei Gold for $29 for a matched pair. Everyone else seems to be out of them. Must be a very popular tube. I'm also interested in the Svetlana. All the upgrade places seem to be using these in their modded players.

I ordered a pair of these yesterday though. The description sounds pretty cool.
"Tesla/JJ 12AX7/ECC83 These are near exact copies of exotic and rare Telefunken ECC803s.( not the flat-plate ECC83..but the really rare frame-grid style which cost $100's of dollars if you can find any). Get close to real Telefunken sound at a fraction of NOS prices! These are the latest ECC83S variety."

Only $7.95 ea so what the heck.

I ordered a pair of the 6DJ8 Ei Elites for my pre-amp though. We'll see how they work there ;)
I'm pretty impressed with Tube Depot and Triode Electronics so far. Talk about immediate shipping. I got the tracking info from both places within a few hours of ordering.
