I have a problem. I had an old Sony STR-DE 835 receiver that I used with some Polk RT 25 speakers. Used it for several years with no problem. Upon upgrading, I sold it (receiver) to my friend who fried the receiver and had to have it fixed. Now, the receiver has blown each speaker that he put with it, which have all been Polk, and the guy at the shop keeps telling him that the receiver is too powerful for the speakers, which I used with no problems. The receiver is 100 watts as is the speakers. I think this guy didn't fix the amp properly and now it has a recurrent problem. What do you think?

    i think your friend turned up the volume way to loud and that killed the speakers. 100wpc is not to much power for speakers.. it's good.. but not "to much".

    he probably drove the receiver to hard and something fried it.... then the distortion went to the speakers and blew them up.

    A good high quality receiver doesn't have to cost alot.... and it will make a huge difference in not only sound.. but how well your speakers sound.

    Rarely does anyone here at club Polk blow speakers. yes it happens on occasion. but not very often.

    If you are in the market for a new recevier... look at others besides Sony. If you're dead on for Sony... look at their higher end receivers. Denon seems to be a big favorite in here... but there are many more brands to consider. Receivers can only do so much... look into getting an external amp for your receiver.

    Your friend has learned a very expensive lesson: TURN IT DOWN!!!

    His equipment & also his ears will thank him.

    Home audio is just that. It is supposed to be for YOUR home, Not the entire neighborhood!

    Just to clarify, I live in a house and have had it turned up much louder than he ever could in his apartment, so him turning it up too loud isn't an issue.

    I wonder how much the repairs cost? He probably could have replaced it with a quality pre-owned unit for close to the same or less.

    when he said fried.. i wonder if he means just replaced a fuse or something.. i can't imagine how anyone could fry a receiver. not that it's totally impossible to do. but fry as in burned it up. seems far fetched.

    The only way I can think of frying a receiver is to wire the speakers wrong or parallel 2 4ohm speakers together on a receiver that won't handle a 2ohm load. I think that sounds right?
    Anyway you get my drift.

    Not fried in the sense of burned up. I think a capacitor or something had to be replaced. I don't remember exactly what is was.

    the rt25's prob. blew for 2reasons.

    1. the sony's advertised 100wpc is more like 25wpc in reality- thus underdriving the speakers- when the volume is turned up- this can lead to clipping. I'm going to guess that more speakers are blown by being underdriven than overdriven.

    2. The repair tech made a substandard receiver even worse when he "fixed" it. Was he a certified sony tech or not?

    Lesson learned: Stay away from Sony. And Sony ES. I know this from experience.

    Nope, it wasn't a certified Sony tech.

    Damn, I got rid of my Sony Str-de 835 for the 7ES. I guess the ES models are crap too, cause I did have to send the ES in because the DTS 96/24 wasn't working properly. I used a Certified Sony Tech though, not Raul's electronic repair.

    no, the ES isn't crap. It just isn't my cup of tea, that's all. I had both a 333 ES and a de935. The 935 was crap. The Sony ES was ok, but just lacked current and a little bit of warmth compared to my H/K and Adcom amps. I say if you like the sound, then keep your ES, i'm sure you will enjoy it. If you ever do decide to upgrade in the future- may I suggest Harman Kardon, Denon, or Marantz.

    Thanks for the info. I will be upgrading eventually, and I probably wont go with Sony this time. It will either be Denon, Onkyo, or H/K. I'm trying to wait and see what new features will be available in the next year or so.

    I'll look into Marantz. It may be out of my price range, or at least I thought it was. I'm definitely into music.

    I would be suspicious of a faulty amp/repair. Also I definitely agree that, if anything, the receiver has too little power. Hopefully someone with Polk customer service can give some insight here.
