His response:
"I am not sure what mildew damage is or looks like but if you don't want the preamp you can return it."
Since he's kind of giving in do I demand shipping costs? I figure from chicago to windsor ontario it cant be too bad shipping. Do I ask him to send me my money back first? How should I go about doing so?
Thanks for the help so far guys,
Raj -
Make sure he understands that it's a mess before sending it back. Usually you return it and he refunds the money after receiving it. As for the shipping, you'll have to work that out with him.
BTW, how much did you pay for it?Political Correctness'.........defined

Make sure he knows? How exactly, I sent him my initial picture and then one of the treo. Do I just say that I'm not normally an **** about stuff like this but I received the package with a ton of gunk all over it and want my money back as a result?

LOL...yeah, that should work.Political Correctness'.........defined

Mildewed metal is a new one on me.
Tell him you're so disraught over this deal that you're thinking of going off your meds.
When you return it, buy signature verified delivery service from your carrier.
More later,

Looks like the bubble wrap imprinted itself somehow. weird.
-
I dont have original pictures, but it definitely doesnt look like it was like that. No way in hell I would've bought it if I saw this sort of imperfection...plus there was visible grime in addition to white markings.
-
I'm glad to see the seller is willing to settle up with you on this.
I'm beging to think maybe he put a light coat of oil on the metal before wrapping it? Or maybe the bubble wrap was contaminated with oil?
As I said about my shotgun barrels, they were lightly oiled (good) and then wrapped in bubble wrap (not so good). The bubble marks were all over the barrels. It took forever to get them to "stay off". I'd re-oil and wipe the metal down really good with pressure and it would look like they were going to tone down but right back they'd come. I played this game for some time before getting rid of them. Drove me nuts.
It looks like at least some metals and some oils mixed with bubble wrap might be bad combinations. -

His second response "A while ago I sprayed the contacts and buttons with an electrical contact cleaner. Likely some pooled inside the unit and some came out during shipping. It is kind of like WD 40 in consistently, and is likely what is on the unit. I am sure it will wipe off, but if you are put off (and I don't blame you), you can return it to the address on the package.
Be sure to make it clear that it is a return. Otherwise customs will think I am buying it and charge duty--in which case I would just send it back.
Did you try it out? What did you think of the sound?
I am sorry if I misrepresented the unit, and I am sorry for the all of the trouble."
Seems like a good guy...what do you think of his idea of what happened?
Raj -
Anything is possible and since I may be wrong about the mildew and he has basically given you permission to clean the item, you may want to try it.
You should delete his address.Political Correctness'.........defined

What should I use at this point? I was wondering what the hell electrical contact cleaner is exactly
I'd be up for going to ace hardware and buying something to at least try on my end considering the guy has been so nice about the whole thing. -
I'd start with Fantastic, cuts oily grease like no tomorrow, just be careful around the lettering as it may affect that.Political Correctness'.........defined

ok, so I was thinking about an old organic chemistry--we were always taught like dissolves like so I put a little bit of WD40 on a towel and wiped, and so far it seems to get rid of the marks on the front facia of this preamp. The ones that seem unaffected by the cleaner and the wd40 at this point seem to be the knobs...hrm

What the heck kind of contact cleaner did he use? The kind with lube built in apparently. That's not for the application he was using it for. The plain contact cleaner he should have been using can pool all it wants to but it will still completely evaporate in a rather short time! (In minutes)
Doro: Actually singing didn't cross my mind. I was preoccupied cursing under my breath. -
At my company we used to make a unit which was black anodized aluminum. The finish held up pretty well but now and then we would get one back for service that looked exactly like that. They normally came from chemical processing plants. It appeared to our experts that the aluminum was corroding through the anodized plating. That is probably why you wipe it down but then it comes right back. The black stuff coming off of yours is different though. Our equipment could always be wiped down without getting any blackness on the cloth. Weird.
I would be firm but wouldn't get too agressive with the seller. He will probably refund your money with no problem unless you make him mad. Most people are fairly moral. He probably wiped it off and it looked nice then packaged it. If it were me I would send you a full refund including shipping once I received the item back and confirmed the condition. I've been in this position before as a buyer and have considered what I would do as a seller. All you can do is trust him... And remember, you can leave feedback for him any time at audiogon.
As a seller he could have the shipping company pick it up for insurance inspection but if they deny the claim he will probably not do anything further for you. Better to let him just refund your money if he is willing to.

How do I do this? Do I write RETURN really big on the box as well as type up a return slip and put it in the box if they open it? Anyone with canadian shipping experience?
Raj -
That's sounds about right, maybe add return for refund or something.Political Correctness'.........defined
