and it contained a preamp I bought on audiogon. The outside of the box seemed fine, the packing seemed alright there was foam insert and bubble wrap all around, but the preamp looked like this:

forums wont let me attach a file right now AGH

Well anyways the preamp has a bunch of circle marks that are like some white residue. When wiped with a damp towel it makes the towel black. The marks come off but reappear. in addition the Knobs lost paint or something. I think the bubble wrap the guy used had something on it!

WTF do I do?! (will post picture when I can)

It seems obvious by the pic, maybe he applied something tp cover marks/scratches and now you are removeing it.. shoe polish? sorta like the sharpie for edge knicks only in a terrible manor and unknown to you.. I would e-mail asap and ask what the heck is on it.

Oh man, that just ain't right. Thats exactly what happened, or there was some sort of reaction to the bubble wrap--but not likely.

I have yet to see a chemical reaction caused by bubble wrap....c'mon now.

That looks like prior damage....better get things started.

Link the original ad from Audiogon, so that we may see.

I would guess that he put it up for sale, cleaned it with a nice shiny oil to make it look all nice and clean, wrapped it in bubble wrap and then shipped it out as soon as it was paid for.......

Yup, kinda looks like a well oiled machine. To help cover up severe corrosion that is. The bubble wrap marks will be around for a long time on that surface.

Another interest of mine is collecting antique, hammer, double barrel shotguns. I had one shipped to me once that came with the (non-corroded) barrels well oiled (a good thing) and wrapped in bubble wrap. Could've done without that part I guess. It took repeated oiling and rubbing with a cloth over a couple of months time to get rid of the bubble imprints on the steel.

I'll bet you don't ship 4.5 to 6.5 million dollars in computer/network/tools/test equipment per year...it can and does react to some surfaces; rare, yes, but it does happen. That's why I said "but not likely" above.

well I sent him the pic and asked him what we're going to do about this ****. I'm rather pissed off...those of you that responded to my ebay add that local pickup went without a hitch. The guy won the auction for 103.50 but paid me 125 for allowing quick pickup.

Actually Steve, I ship at least that much in Telecom equipment every 6 months at least....and my observation was simply based on MY experience.

Sorry that you've had ruined equipment Mr. Computer.

Okay, so everything but the knobs seems like its okay. (btw those who asked, the listing has been removed from audiogon because this transaction started long ago, but his user name is chryslerjay) Whats the best way to clean this off. After I wipe it, the white-ish **** seems to come back! I tried a simple all purpose cleaner, that pulls off the **** better but the smear comes back!

If it was me, I'd try a small amount of Meguiars Cleaner Wax. Its good at getting oily things off car paint. Just work a dab in, let it dry, then buff off.

    Or maybe Goo Gone.

It's hard for me to tell from your pic, but it looks like mildew damage that he has tried to cover up. Can you post a better pic? If you get no response from the seller, contact Audiogon. They will actually do something to help you unlike ePay.

Yep, sure looks like mildew. There is no way to remove mildew damage from anodized aluminum and in fact you shouldn't try to clean it anymore than you have. Instead, you should return it for a full refund including shipping charges both ways.

if the seller doesnt respond and you end up getting stuck with it, take off a knob and try some metal polish on it....that way if it doesnt work or makes things worse its only one knob...and i dont think it can get much worse then that

Nope, you can not polish it off as the mildew has caused a chemical reaction with the metal. Do not mess with the piece and DO NOT tell the seller or Audiogon that you tried to clean it. The seller could then say that YOU caused the damage.

If it's oil based marks they'll come off eventually. Mildew is another deal. I can't tell by the pics.
