I recently purchased the SVS PB10-ISD and I am completely amazed at what I was missing. I set up my home theatre in a guest house, approximately 20' feet adjacent to the main house and when I first set up the SVS and threw in U-571, everyone came running over the main house to see what the heck was shaking the walls. It was exactly the kind of experience I was hoping for and it put a huge smile upon my face. I love it!!!

That is the type of response that I expect to get from an SVS. Soon I will join the ranks of the SVS owners.
That PSW505 does seem to cut out on really low scenes in U-571 and The Incredibles. I put the Incredibles on for the scene "This message will self-destruct", and I was not moved by it like I should have been. It got low, but not low enough.Main Set-up: 55" 120 hz Samsung LN55B650, Onkyo TX-SR806, Emotiva XPA-5, Emotiva XPA-2, PS3 Slim, Sony BDP-S560, Apple TV (160g), Panamax M5300-PM, Polk Audio CSi5, RTi10's, FXi3's, RTi4's, and SVS PB12 Plus

That scene is centered at 28 Hz. Waterfall plot courtesy of Illka R at HTF.
Actually, that is one of the higher frequency bass hits in this movie......there are scenes in The Incredibles with strong bass in the 13-18 Hz region.

The scene at the begining where Mr. Incredible sets the tree back down caused mt PSW505 to make a loud "pop" with the woofer set at about 3/4 of the volume and 80Hz on the Onkyo. Front and center were set at "large". I put the woofer at 12 o'clock, and this did not occur again. What gives?

Yes, that scene has pretty deep bass. You are just overdriving the subwoofer and it bottomed out. Your cure was fine - turn it down.
Even with the speakers set to large, the LFE channel is still directed to the subwoofer, and most of the bass in The Incredibles is derived from the LFE channel. So setting the speakers to large won't reduce the load much on the subwoofer in this particular DVD.
In other DVDs (like U-571 dts) it's a different story; that DVD has full range bass in all five speaker channels."What we do in life echoes in eternity"

Yep, what Doc said. Definitely overdriving the sub. I never took my 505's amps beyond 12-1 o'clock.
I'm guessing you probably need to calibrate your system levels. Should be a few threads about that.

I guess I was trying to mash out as much bass as I could. I think my system is calibrated fine, but I may need to work on sub placement for bass response, until I get that SVS.

Sid's dad smoked the woofer in his PC-Ultra by overdriving it. IIRC, the room is large with an open floor plan, and the sub was not corner loaded, which were probably contributing factors to the sub's early demise. That, and the fact that he ignored that tell-tale "clacking" sound which indicates the woofer VC former has struck the backplate.
FWIW, I still think the cylinders still offer the best combination of footprint, enclosure volume, enclosure rigidity/stiffness, light weight, and portability. And they are built like tanks with 1/4" thick cylinder walls and 1.5" thick baltic birch end caps on the Plus and Ultra models. They look exceptionally cool in person and are a very well executed design.
I went with the PB12-Ultra/2 strictly because of the wood finish and drop dead looks, and the dual drivers. Purely from a performance perspective, dual PC-Ultra will outperform a PB12-Ultra/2 in the 20 Hz tune. Simply put, the duals would have more enclosure volume and more port area at the same tune point. In a moderate size room it is unlikely anyone would reach the limits of either option, so the performance advantage of the dualies may be moot to many enthusiasts.
Regardless, Sid is right - the respective single driver boxes and cylinders are virtual performance clones, with the same woofer, amp, vent arrangement, and enclosure volume.
I like the new PB12-ISDv which uses the PB12-Plus enclosure/vents (20 Hz native tune) with an ISD woofer and a variable tune version of the 320 watt BASH amp.
BTW, the BASH technology is licensed by Indigo, but the amps can be made anywhere. I have seen BASH amps made in China, for example. I don't know where Polk's BASH amps are made, but the SVS amps are made by Indigo in Canada."What we do in life echoes in eternity"

Thanks Doc. I am learning a lot about this bass management and several other things with SVS, Polk, etc. This is a good thread, and all the responses are greatly appreciated.

If you mean bottom the woofer - I have once on my SVS 25-31 cs+. It was when I first purchased it and was testing to see how loud it would go (SPL meter in hand) on the Darla tap from "Finding Nemo" (came out to about 112 or 113db as I remeber)
It was way louder than I ever really listen to movies and I have not bottomed it since. I have noticed the woofer starting to strain (distort) on some movies (Star Wars II - when the ship blows up in chapter 3 or 4) and I just make sure to turn it down a little lower on those movies.
I think some movies are just HOT in the LFE department and can cause more distress on my sub than others. Also - I do not have a high-pass filter on my sub so it may be just trying to re-create to low a bass tone at to high a level.
Either way - for even loud movie watching the 25-31 + (currently tuned to 20hz) runs really well. It's the best sub I have ever had in my system. If I get the chance to change it out for a CS-Ultra though - I will. (now that my wife is kind of used to the shape.... )
One question for the Dr. though - since the price is comparable, what would give the best output at 20hz - PB2-plus or a PB-Ultra? Was just wondering that....
MichaelMains.............Polk LSi15 (Cherry)
Center............Polk LSiC (Crossover upgraded)
Surrounds.......Polk LSi7 (Gloss Black - wood sides removed and crossovers upgraded)
Subwoofers.....SVS 25-31 CS+ and PC+ (both 20hz tune)
Pre\Pro...........NAD T163 (Modded with LM4562 opamps)
Amplifier.........Cinepro 3k6 (6-channel, 500wpc@4ohms) -
The PB2 + is louder than the PC Ultra. I believe by 3-4db, according to SVS - as they recomended it to my Dad after he slaughtered the Ultra driver...
One thing to note, I didn't blow any subwoofer except the M&K I had. The PC Ultra was destroyed by one person, and one person only.- Not Tom ::::::: Any system can play Diana Krall. Only the best can play Limp Bizkit. -

When did this come out? I didn't even see mention of this in the "news" portion of SVS's website. This is interesting. Same price as HSU VTF-3, but larger enclosure, lower tuning. Hmmm. For rig details, see my profile. Nothing here anymore... -

Very recently.
It has a native 20 Hz tune with all three ports open, which is a relatively new development for SVS, and now a standard configuration on the PB-12 Plus/Ultra models also. Plug a port, and you've got a 16 Hz tune with dual 3" ports still open.
Yes, I would agree, it's closest competition would be the VTF-3MKII. The VTF-3 is tuned to 22 Hz with dual 3" ports open. Plug a port, and you've got an 18 Hz tune with a single 3" port open.
With the optional turbocharger (essentially an external port extension device), the tune can be dropped to 18 Hz with both ports open. The turbocharger is not for sale yet; I would email Hsu Research for more details on the release date."What we do in life echoes in eternity"

I looked on the SVS site at this subwoofer, and for $100 bucks more you get a lot more features. That thing has three ports and comes with a port plug for even lower bass. If I spend $599 for the PB12-ISD, why not fork out the extra $100 for more features and greater impact.
