But I kind of like the velcro idea. I'm thinking the top may be in the way if it's hinged. I think it'd be best if it were removable. What's another way to do that besides velcro? That may be about it.

The velcro idea I was thinking of would require you to have precision cuts, and absolutely NO over-hang, and you would have to route around the edge of the sides/back/front or run internal boards to run into...

    Why?

If you staple into the wood, you cant staple in the removeable board... (DUH)...

If you use 3/4" stock, and use a board that is flush with the side boards... this would allow you to bring the carpet over the edges and staple on the side/front/back boards - then you could precision cut a piece of carpet unlayed with velcro to set over it...

That is how I would go about it...

Just make the box, leave the top off (sides to correct height) then put 3/4" thick boards (1" in width) around the edges (recessed so top board will be flush) - this will allow you to remove it when need be

You could also do that idea, and put foam tape around the internal boards, and cut a 'handle' out in the removable top and use no screws....

Then use the velcro carpet to cover it

That would be very fast access

Maybe something like this so the sides are taller than the front and back so that the top can rest on the front abd back and be flush with the sides.

    hmmmm...

    SURE??

but that will look a bit weirder and will look like its seperate pieces...

If u make it where the top just slides down within the cabinet, then have velcro carpet completely covering the top....it would look like a solid box...

okay, i'll admit that i'm utterly lost with all these ideas, but i'll throw mine out there:

you have a frame, minus the top, sitting there, with the foam running along the perimeter on the top (so it dampens the top). why not just use the carpet as a hinge? set the top on, carpet away, then cut the sides and back, leaving a hinge of carpet at the front of the box (the viewable bit). stick a latch on the fan-side, and drive away. as long as you tack/glue the carpet tightly, the top should be completely immobile when locked; you unlock it and fold it towards you to access the stuff.

it does have the disadvantage of being not completely removable.

I think I really want it to be completely removable, though. That'll just make things easier, though it will also necessitate seams in the carpet. I'll just have to think about all the ideas we've covered today for a while, and see what comes to the surface.

    Thank you all very much!!!!

Well, this is kind of depressing. I just went outside and took some mearurements. I'm not sure how big the MRV-T420 is, but I'm thinking it may be too big for even this area!

Here's the deal: I don't want the box to come past the end of the wheel well much at all for aesthetics. At floor level I have 19.5" from the back of the back seat to the end of the wheel wells. However, this amp also takes up space vertically. Just pulling numbers out of the air, I guessed I may make this box about 5" tall. Due to the slant of the back seat, at 5" high, I only have 17" from the seat to the end of the wheel wells. I'm not sure that is enough room, as this amp is fairly large; it may be, though. This area is 43" wide, so I might can't mount it that way if it is narrow enough.

Anybody know the dimensions on Alpine's MRV-T420?

    Thanks!

That's not quite as large as I remembered - thank goodness. I don't think it will be so hard to make that fit back there. How much clearance do you think I should have vertically? If it's 2 1/2" tall and I make the 3 1/2" tall, would that be enough? Could I make it 3" tall?

I don't think I want to get into making a box for the whole cargo area.

3" is cutting it a bit close, cause you need airflow over the top of the amp to cool it. will .5" make a big difference? cause 1" of clearance should be okay.

I should be able to go with 1" of clearance. Now, here's a thought: That'd put me at making the enclosure 3 1/2" high. I'm making this box extend all the way across so that I can later put a sub amp in it. Will it be more than 2 1/2" tall? And thus restrict air circulation too much? Or can I build my box 3 1/2" tall with confidence that whatever sub amp I get will work in it?

I'll go out and measure later today and see where 3 1/2" tall puts me. Sounds like it'll work like a charm, though.

    Thanks!

Hmmm. That's good. Encouraging. I'll still measure and see if I can't get 3 1/2" out of it; I'm pretty sure I'll be able to.

    Thanks!

yes, we all know you're 'special'... i'm a big fan of 'better safe than dead', and while this is a bit less extreme than that, it still applies...

the rf t2001bd is a big amp, and it's only 2.6" tall. all of hifonics amps (neglecting their massive 5kW and 10kW beasts) are 2.75" tall.

    3.5" is good.

Yeah, I am, too! So, I'll measure later on today and see how 3 1/2" will work out. Sitting here at my desk, I'm pretty sure it'll work fine. We'll see.

Ok; update. I've been doing a lot of thinking about this box and amp and what all I have coming up in the next few weeks, and (even if this idea passes Mom), I don't think I'll be able to do it. I've figured that I'll just go and get a Memphis 4x75 (if I can afford it) and hopefully that'll go under my back seat. That should really be sufficient for my needs; I'm just tired of worrying with all this.

So, is there any reason why I shouldn't get a Memphis 4x75 amp? With I'll bi-amp my components.

    Thanks.

what year is your jeep? i have a custom finished box out of a 96 grand cherokee that goes on the passenger side that slides in to the pocket and fits real nice that holds a 10" sub (it had a jl10w6 in it) it is a well built sturdy box that when you look in the vehcle you could not tell it was a sub just looked like a cargo box of some sort. my puppy used to like to lay on it until she got to big. the sub fires in the cargo area and has a thick grate in front of the sub so that nothing would hit it when crap was back there. worked real well now it just sits in my garage waiting for a new home paid too much for it to just throw away

Wow, that sounds like a great box. Sounds like that'd work perfectly to slide up under a seat and be concealed. That's a great idea.

Except that I have a '95 Cherokee....lol. Thanks for bringin' it up, though.
