Well...it's nothing compared to CD sales, even though the SACD's are priced the same. I don't think there's enough mass interest in high-resolution audio to justify the costs of the labels releasing new formats at a similar price per unit, much less more. I love SACD's, especially jazz releases, but people who are this into this stuff make up a microscopic part of mass consumers. If anything, people want things smaller and easier...hence the popularity of MP3's and the I-Pod. Vinyl still sounds better than CD, but it's a specialy item at best these days.

I really hope SACD stays around. If not, then hopefully I'll be able to get a whole bunch of remaining stock for really cheap.

There's an addage that goes something like : People generally don't like to listen to music....they just like the way it sounds.

Yep I signed.. but think this will actually make a difference? I mean so now the companies know they have 300 or so people willing to buy their product. I'm not sure about petitions but I suppose if it has a chance of saving something awesome it's worth a shot. (although I might be a bit of a hypocrite since I only own 1 sacd and a normal dvd player :( but I'm still workin to get to that quality of a system)

Just got done talking to a Sony rep who says Sony will not be getting rid of SACD anytime soon, even with the release of Blu-Ray. Interesting...

According to the guy I talked to today/yesterday, no. It's only going to be for movies and they WANT to keep SACD alive. :D

Here's an interesting read on Audiophile Audition ...."SACD is Dying....or Not?"

    http://www.audaud.com/audaud/APR05/feature/feature.html

Summary: Sony is not dropping SACD.

The article mentioned 3,500 SACD released worldwide....yet there's only 2,931 (the current count at sa-cd.net) listed . I know of at least 15-20 currently available SACD titles that are not listed at sa-cd.net (such as the stereo only version of Carole King's "Tapestry"), but another 500 unlisted titles?

Good read. I do wish they would release more rock and blues SACD's though.

Ive read that their reasoning is most people dont listen to music at home for long periods anymore. Their either watching TV, movies or playing video games.

Im afraid this is true of me as well. I listen to more music than the average guy but I would say the vast majority of my time is watching the tube or playing games.

I don't want to rain on anyone's parade here but I think I'm the only one who thinks this is like rearranging the deck chairs on the Titanic.

The concept of multi-channel surround music is exciting to me, but SACD and DVD-Audio are both DOA IMO. They aren't selling well and they're overpriced. Again, I dig DTS Audio CDs, but I don't see this stuff going anywhere, petition or not. I can't get half the bands I like in any discrete multi-channel format.

What's worse for me (as far as the notion of saving SACD), is that I prefer the very natural sounding upmix of SRS Circle Surround II decoding in Music Mode to just about anything else. It places lead vocals squarely in my center speaker, and creates a great surround mix on-the-fly. With as good as CSII sounds, I don't lose any sleep over the fact that the music wasn't sent to some overpaid engineer to be re-done from scratch so he can brag about it at a surround show. When they re-mix from the masters for discrete surround, I think many of these discs sound artistically too different from the original material and for me, that can take away from the experience.

Besides all that, I think the consumer masses are generally happy enough with CDs that they have no desire to upgrade their collections. Maybe telling them back in 1985 that CDs sound as good as the original recordings wasn't such a good plan after all? :-)

Good luck with the petition though. As long as it is something you enjoy, you deserve a shot at saving it.
