2 R50 Fronts
2 R30 Surrounds
CSI30 Center
PSW303 Sub
Can any of you recommend one of the following receivers for this system?
Denon AVR 1705
Denon AVR 1905
Onkyo SR502
Onkyo SR602
THis is going in my basement that is approximately 14 x 12. I know this is not the highest quality polk system on the market but it is very suitable for my needs. This will be my first ever home theater system so I have no clue as to what type of receiver I need.
Thanks in advance for the help!

i am thrilled with my harman kardon avr635 talked circuity city down to 949 for it....it really rocks

If at all possible, try to listen/demo a Denon or Onkyo, to see which sound you like better.
If you decide you like the Onkyo sound, try to stretch your budget to the Onkyo 702 ( http://www.jr.com/ ). It has a little more power, pre-outs, and 5 band equalizers on each channel for room equalization.Win7 Media Center -> Onkyo TXSR702 -> Polk Rti70 -
Pardon my ignorance...but what are the preouts for?

i will recommend none of them as it has been mentioned you could have better choices and better sound with just adding 100 $ more, but if there is a multiple choice between these four, i will go with denon.

I have a RX-V992 tha t bought in 1998 that is stil rockin'. It is rated at 80 watts per channel but has plenty of power and I like it loud. I have it attached to a pair of LSI25's and it works fine.SuperDave
Yamaha RX-V992 (Center,Rears)
Adcom GFA-5500 (Mains)
Denon DVD-1920
Mitsubishi 40" LCD
DirecTV DVR Whole House
Polk LSi25 Mains
Polk LSiC Center
Infinity RS1 Rears
Monster THX Cables -
I'll second the vote here for Yamaha. I've got a Yamaha 5.1 set up with R series speakers and I'm completley satisfied. It sounds great IMO. Not too bright, not too warm, it is just right. Just my $.02 good luck!Audio: Polk S15 * Polk S35 * Polk S10 * SVS SB-1000 Pro

since the Polk R speakers are generally bright sounding- as opposed to the RTI's and LSI's- i say get a Harmon Kardon.
Their amplifiers are the best- they are CONSERVATIVELY rated- which means they're measured through the entire 20HZ-20KHZ spectrum with ALL channels driven- not measured at 1KHZ only with only one channel driven at a time like those crappy Sony's, Onykos, Pioneers and Kenwoods.
Denon is a nice brand- but I think Harmon will sound better for your speakers- the Harmon has a very nice natural warm analog-type sound to it- which should offset the brightness of your R speakers- this will come in handy ESPECIALLY for music listening.
I have a Harmon Kardon avr-235 I bought from J&R- for $350
It's $500 everywhere else- even the big box stores.
Plus- and most importantly- it supports Prologic IIX AND has 7.1 pre outs- so you can upgrade to a separate amp in the future. I did that- My Harmon's now a pre-amp connected to an Adcom 2channel amp and an Adcom 5channel amp.
In my opinion- it's by far the best receiver on the market for the money- whether it be a steal at $350 or MSRP at $500. Period. -

If you don't like any of these brands thats fine. I don't think you need to call them crap though. Sony's ES, Pioneer Elite, and anything Onkyo are FAR from what I (and many others) would consider crap. Doees it make you feel better about what you have by putting down anything else?Audio: Polk S15 * Polk S35 * Polk S10 * SVS SB-1000 Pro

so sorry. next time i'll remember to say "below average"
and i'm wondering why this offends you so much- considering you have a Yamaha- whose integrity isn't even in question.
it's just a discussion blog- jesus christ. -
oh - and more thing-
it has been well documented by many in the industry that these companies as well as others (i.e.- SONY/ES, PIONEER, ONKYO and KENWOOD) measure their wattage ratings using the 1KHZ/1 CHANNEL Driven only Rule.
Do a google search for the Onkyo SR600 receiver. Onkyo advertises 80x5. In independent bench tests, the receiver actually performed at 34x5. Would you buy a new Acura if it was advertised at 300bhp- only to find out that it was performing at only 125bhp?
It's not only misleading the consumer- it's flat out wrong. That's why I call it crap. At least companies like Denon and Harmon have the decency to be upfront with their valued customers.
These companies deserve to be criticized by consumers when they blatently distort their power specs. Only then will they be pressured to improve their product lines in order for them to meet their advertised power specs.
Cheers.

Really?
That's why I call it crap.
Guess not.

I wasn't offended by what you said - it was the WAY you said it. Bad manners IMO.
Harmon Kardon. Their amplifiers are the best
You say this like it was a fact. If you really believe this then why are you using Adcoms?
In my opinion - it's by far the best receiver on the market for the money- whether it be a steal at $350 or MSRP at $500. Period.
Period? This your OPINION? IMO You were RUDE.

This is an open forum for people passionate about the audio hobby. Everyone here is entitled to an opinion but there is no need to be disrespectful. Other brands exist for a reason. Every brand has differences. It is a matter of whether or not you (or anyone else for that matter) prefer those differences. I'm glad you enjoy your HK. Its not for me but you don't see me shoving Yamaha down anybody's throat. Different strokes for different folks, right?
BTW - I think it'd be a good idea for you to re-read the forum rules.
2) The discussion of politics and religion is not allowed on this forum.
6) Do not brand bash. We're all in this together. Discuss what you like and dislike. But don't bash someone or something because you don't like it.
You & I are off topic here anyway. This thread was about trying to help Paul find a receiver. If you'd like to continue this discussion shoot me an e-mail.

that's fine dude.
if you want to analyze, reanalyze, cut and paste my thread into chop liver then that's your business.
I have a life.
Happy trails. -
I happen to agree with peersol.
I have Polk R50s and both an HK AVR630 and Onkyo TXSR702. I prefer the Onkyo 702, it sounds better to me. That doesn't make the HK bad.Win7 Media Center -> Onkyo TXSR702 -> Polk Rti70 -
that's cool man.
if you're ever interested in selling the 630 let me know,. k? -
Peersool - I wouldn't worry about him, he obviously doesn't know much.
Aaharvel - I mean that in the general comments made about the other manufacturers, not so much as an overall not knowing much. I agree that Denon and HK typically have more honest power ratings, but your other information is a little inaccurate.
Enjoy your HK and Polk's, as it's a solid combination for most people.CTC BBQ Amplifier, Sonic Frontiers Line3 Pre-Amplifier and Wadia 581 SACD player. Speakers? Always changing but for now, Mission Argonauts I picked up for $50 bucks, mint. -
Any recommendations on the HK receiver??? $600 or less
-
yeah. the H/K avr-235 is the best deal of any of them in my opinion.
7.1 prologic IIx
7 amplifiers at 50 watts (very conservatively speced)
HD Component Inputs (2)
5.1 and 7.1 Channel In for SACD, DVD AUDIO, etc.
7.1 Pre-Outs for upgrading to separate amps.
adjustable crossover for subwoofer out jack.
thats their cheapest receiver that does all of this. yet sounds absolutely phenomenal.
$500 everywhere else.
$350 at J&R.com- which btw is a factory authorized dealer so the warranty is intact. -
No one suggested Rotel. Their newest one is only $2200, but it sure looks sweet.....:DLarry

I picked up the Sony DA5000ES for around $ 725 from an etailer. Don't regret the decision at all, have had it for about a week.
