Apparently ... while I was not around ... both drivers on my 18 yr old 10Bs blew out ... supposedly a "puff of smoke" was seen to come from the cabinet (I know ... ouch!). Has anyone else ever had this happen? If so, where did you find replacements? The driver number is MW 6503

Thanks for any help.

You should order new ones while they are still available.
CTC BBQ Amplifier, Sonic Frontiers Line3 Pre-Amplifier and Wadia 581 SACD player. Speakers? Always changing but for now, Mission Argonauts I picked up for $50 bucks, mint.

Thanks. Of course I started asking before I started looking ... sorry. I see they are available directly from Polk.

Is this common, however ... for both drivers to go south at the same time?

I guess I should backtrack and suggest you swap the drivers from your good speaker, into the "bad" just to make sure they are blown, and it's not your crossover.

I've seen drivers blow out and burn up....and the cause is almost always because they were overdriven and/or abused.

Yep, I've already swapped 'em out, so I know its the drivers.
    Thanks for the advice!

I bought my Monitor 10s a little over 18 years ago (Dec 1986).
I see no reference to them being 10 Bs. The manual states
they are Studio Monitor 10s. The lable on the back of the speaker,
which has a serial number for each speaker, indicates Monitor 10.

What version of Monitor 10 speakers do I own and what is the
correct replacement part number for the 6 1/2" drivers?

For my education what is the frequency response of the 6 1/2"
drivers and the weight of the magnet?

    Please advise.

    Thanks.

Monitor 10B, most likely...the tweeter is typically the dead giveaway for the model number. Pull the tweeter, turn it over and look at what is written on the back...there should be a year, and a model number.

MW6503. The replacements are still available, but order soon.

The actual driver data is not available.

I pulled the tweeters and the model number of the tweeter
is SL2000. The date on the tweeters is 8/26/86. M10 was stamped on the magnet also.

I pulled one of the 6 1/2" drivers and it had a model # of
6503 and a build date of 10/3/86. It also had M10 stamped on the
    magnet.

    That solves that mystery.

    Thanks for your help.

I am glad polk audio started such a forum for audio and home theater enthusiasts!

My monitor 10s have provided my family and very much enjoyment over the past 18 years plus and always get compliments no matter what amplifier I have had them connected to (usually a Yamaha A-720 and soon to be a Yamaha HTR-5890!). I can't wait to pair them with the other Polk speakers I just ordered (Monitor 40s, CS1, and a PSW12)!
