Having Problems Connecting to PC

I just got back with an iCable that an employee at Best Buy recomended I use to hook up my powermac G4 to my Denon 2803. When I try to listen to music from my PC I have to turn the volume up way louder than normal and there's a humming noise coming from my speakers. What's the deal? Thanks for the help.

The output is to low. Turn the volume all the way up on the computer. The hum doesn't go away then you have a difference in grounding. You may have to use a lift in order to remove the hum.

Actually, don't turn the volume all the way up just yet... Put on a radio station or CD on the Dennon and some similiar music on the computer and flip sources while turning the volume up on the computer until they're about the same. Many computer outputs will send out a volume louder than the line level that the dennon is expecting, so the reciever will clip the signal and distort. While this distortion isn't as bad as what you get from the power section, it still isn't good for your speakers.
About the hum: If it's still there, you should try a ground loop isolator first, then an RF choke- computers make RF noise like you wouldn't believe and it could just be that. If you get a sound card with both optical & coax, that's one case where optical is definitely preferable.
One other thing- does OSX have a volume control for each source? If you were on a PC, I'd tell you to doble click the speaker symbol in the tool bar and bring up the CD and/or WAV volume slider.Gallo Ref 3.1 : Bryston 4b SST : Musical fidelity CD Pre : VPI HW-19

I don't know about PowerMAC but I have my PC connected via Digital Coax out of my sound card to 3803.
On PC in the sound settings there is a Volume Control and Wave where you can adjust the level.
I always keep the Wave to max because sometimes even if the volume is way up and the Wave level is down the volume level does not effect the output.
