If you can't tell from the name, I'm a UNC grad and I'm win-win right now:

If Duke wins tonight and Sunday, I've got a lock on the $600 office pool... if they loose, well, I love it when Duke looses (But, yeah, I'd rather have the $600)

I'm rooting for your UNC team to go all the way. I need them to play Illinois in the final and win. If that happens, I win our pool.

Three Big Ten teams still alive... Who da thunk it? Can't remember the last time I saw a "team" play as well together as Illinois is playing.

Yeah, and NC almost got their **** kicked in last night by a crappy seeded team.

What's your point? With the exception of Lousiville, every highly seeded team has had at least one tough game thus far. It's the nature of the tournament!

If you've followed Illinois at all this season (which I'm guessing you haven't), they have a nasty habit of playing down to the level of their competition. It bit them in the **** at Ohio State, but that's really been the only down point.

They play solidly and as a team. They're not flashy and have no real superstars. They're just workmanlike and get the job done.

That's been the real story that I think the commentators and prognosticators have missed all season long with respect to the Big Ten: it's a defensive conference. The games are low-scoring; the teams shut one another down... and teams from the other conferences are getting a rude awakening in the tourney. Michigan State, Wisconsin, and Illinois all have one thing in common -- they are very good defensive teams.

North Carolina *almost* met their Waterloo last night when they met a team that wouldn't let them run roughshod up and down the court. Villanova just didn't have enough horses to get the job done. If NC gets that confused when they're playing Illinois, it's over.

All year the Dick Vitales and Digger Phelps of the world have shown their east coast bias spooging over NC and Duke while the Big Ten has just been laying low and waiting in the weeds. Even after the Illini were 10+ weeks at No. 1, all ESPN could ever talk about was North Carolina.

Another thing that's forgotten in all of this was how early in the season Illinois handed Wake Forest and Gonzaga their asses... the games were not even as close as the 20-point margins showed.

Thus far in the tournament Illinois has had to rely on their defense because the shooters were not clicking -- what you've seen thus far bears no resemblence to their shooting during the regular season. Dee Brown started coming out of a shooting slump last game, and if the shots start falling, look out!

Tonight's game against Arizona could either be a blowout by Illinois, or a very tough battle. It all depends on whether Illinois can shut down Salim Stoudamire. Arizona is a one-trick-pony. If that pony doesn't gallop, it's over. Illinois, on the other hand, spreads things out across all of the starters -- they're routinely all in double figures or close. That's the one advantage to not relying on a single superstar -- if someone's having an off game, others step up and fill the gap (the downside though to not having a superstar is that a superstar *can* carry a team on his back if he's hitting on all cylinders).

Win or lose though, it's been one hell of a season for Illinois, one that most people and experts did not see coming.

Indications thus far are that while Deron Williams will go pro after this year, Dee Brown will most likely return for his senior year. If that's the case, next year could be a continuation of this one.

I went to the final home game against Purdue, an 84-50 blowout. It was the first Illini home game I'd gone to in over 2 years -- it was a COMPLETELY different atmosphere from the last one I attended. The Assembly Hall historically has been a tomb, and there was no real home court advantage. That has radically changed. Rather than having empty seats down by the court for the heavy donors, the student "Orange Crush" now lines courtside. It's loud. It's raucous. The games are all sold out. Sitting in a 20,000 capacity crowd all wearing orange while "the wave" circles the building is a heart-pounding experience.

Add to the that how we lucked into Ron Zook as our new football coach (Illinois football has been abysmal since forever; no one predicted that we'd get a bigtime coach), and it's an exciting time to be an Illinois fan!

P.S. Warm and fuzzy moment of the tourney thus far -- watching Bill Self crash and burn like the overrated putz he is.

    Halftime.

Close game at the half, as has been every Illinois game in the tournament thus far. They've shut down Stoudamire, and the defense is good, but Illinois' shooting accuracy is poor.

We'll see what adjustments are made for the second half...

What amazes me is the quickness of AU. Their first step is so fast they are by the Illini b4 you know it. But good, clutch shooting is keeping Illinois in. Fingers crossed here.

Illinois can't buy a shot, and Arizona seemingly can't miss.

For the record I'm not proud of this but..

I flipped on the Big Lebowski when Illinois was down by 11.

A liitle bit later my wife ( a Illini alum) walked by and asked the score. "They are getting killed" I say and we flipped back and they were down by 9 with a liitle bit of time left. Back to the Big Lebowski.
My daughter then walks by and asks how the game is going. "They are getting killed I say", I flip back and its 80-80

I dropped my beer, shuffled the 4 remotes and spent the next 10 minutes in b-ball heaven.

    Oh My................GO ILLINI

If Illinois makes the final game my wife and I are going to go back to the bar that we met in (in Champaign), watch the game and hopefully celebrate a National Championship.

I was at work and busy selling some Polk's most of the game. ;) When I got done, Illinois was down 8 points with about 1:12 to go. I was talking to a coworker originally from Chicago about how it looked like illinois was done. And then the game was back tied just like that! What an amazing, frantic ending!

that's how it goes whenever you have piss poor execution for last second plays.

man as much as tourney games boil down to this you'd think they would have a plan. sure it's differed whenever your there but i'd be gd'd sure I would atleast throw up a prayer.
