...many of you need to invest in some cleaning implements! The dust collections you all have going are astounding! Dust kills electronics man. It hold in heat and can even short out circuit board pathways and other circuits. So I found some stuff that every electronics safe cleaning kit should have.

Ya might wanna thing about getting at least a static free duster and a that CO2 Duster Kit. The static free vac is a good idea and will take the place of the dusters too.

I'm sorry, I'm not sure what you are asking?

If you are asking if you CAN use it or if it is OK, yes is the answer. Just be careful not to knock any parts loose. Computers are much more sensitive to static discharge than any piece of stereo equipment. Cleaning products for computer equipment like what I listed above far exceeds what you need for stereo equipment.

I use canned air all the time.......MUCH less expensive than the mini Co2 cartridges.....

Just don't turn them sideways or upside down so it doesn't freeze the hell out of your internal parts.....

If you just shove the nozzle in your vents, you are going to just blow the dust around. Open the thing up and clean it out so the dust gets blown OUT of teh gear.

Brett, the "canned air" works great but in addition to the extreme temperatures cause by the chemicals leaving the can, it can leave a residue. I gave the CO2 as an option because it is literally chemical free and has no propellant other than pressurization. The kit is expensive and so are the extra containers but the nice thing is that they are refillable. So the benefit there is that you end up saving money in the long run and there are no chemicals to mess up your system. Plus, your body will metabolize CO2 eventhough it isn't good for you in large doses, your body still uses CO2 and you are less likely to be seriously injured when using it as designed than you are with the "canned air". The propellants in the "canned air" and the "canned air" itself are toxic eventhough it says that it is environmentally safe.

I would prefer it if that was NOT done.

I was given the name of "The Cleaner" at work but not because I'm a neat freak or anything silly like that. I just have a habit of helping other departments pick up thier stuff and leave my work areas, voluntarily or not. See, we have a couple departments here that are very poor space managers. They leave horrendous, unprofessional messes everywhere. Since we all have to support the same user base, we try to be cordial to other groups and let them use our server rooms and staging/storage area spaces. The problem lies in that they tend to over-step thier bounds and make a disaster of areas. It then affects how my group can get our work done. So our manager says that an area needs to be cleaned and since I so dearly LOVE to piss in other's Wheaties, I volunteer. Of course I give the offenders ample notice but they rarely heed my warnings until they happen to saunter past the area and see thier equipment wrapped up and stacked on pallets in the hallway destined for warehouse storage. Then they get angry and the wailing and gnashing of teeth ensues. My replies of "You were warned that this would happen." usually don't go over well either.

John - The dust issue bothers me as well....pretty gear, covered in funk......ball scratching funk....wife on rag funk....I have my friends over funk....etc.

The first thing to do when pieces find their way into my home is to de-lame them and try to let them breathe again. I secretly place a piece of me in every piece of gear I resell....so buyer beware.

BTW, BUY THIS TT FROM ME!

I dust my gear regurally once a week, and about every 6-7 months I take my system down and do extensive dusting...

dust gatherings really fast in my room though

it's a good idea to dust on a regular basis that's for sure. but like someone mentioned. dust here collects again fast as I can wipe it away.

I did some dusting this weekend when I swapped amps.. and within 24 hours. i could see dust collecting again.

but your point is well taken. dust could start a fire and then you'd be really screwed.

OK, dust collects quickly on electronics because of EM fields. That is a given and virtually impossible to combat because the EM fields come from not only the power running through system but from the physical movement of motors and such. There will ALWAYS be a thin layer of dust on the components.

The problem arises when dust starts clogging up the vent holes and caking up on printed circuitboards and processors. It gets clogged into connection ports and renders heatsinks inoperative because it covers the heat dissapation surfaces and reduces the efficiency drastically. Not only can it cause fires but it can cause clipping due to overheating.

As far as cleaning your stuff, no, it doesn't have to be done daily but if you are cleaning a room, it doesn't hurt to clean the audio equipment with it. Besides, I have seen the plastics and brushed metal surfaces of the finishes get far more damage from body oils and other gunk that are left to sit and corrode the surfaces for far too long than any soft rag or feather duster.
