IMO, the Polk PSW505 is better than the Velodyne CHT series or the Velo DSP 10" model, and also better than some of the Velo VAI models. If you want infrasonic bass (sub 20Hz), and your budget is $500, the SVS PB10 at $429 plus ship is your best option.

I'd go with the Velo, but if you have a local dealer check out the REL line of subs....suppose to be very musical.

After reading all the opinions on here, I think I would probably pass out if I heard a good sub. I have a Polk PSW350 and I always thougt it sounded pretty good for movies and music as long as I run it about 60% of full volume and don't overdrive the rest of my system. My room is about 25 x 13.Front: RTi70

I'd start with the SVS because I'm sure there has to be some sort of return policy being they only sell online with no way of hearing them without forking out the cash. If you get it home and don't like it, look elsewhere. Hell, there's some sick deals on ebay and audiogon as always. I have the Sunfire Super Junior and absolutely love it. But you're looking around the $800 ('Net pricing) mark. It's extremely small at only 9"x9"x9" and is very musical. My g/f doesn't mind because it's tiny and I love it because it has balls.Never kick a fresh **** on a hot day.
Home Setup: Sony VPL-VW85 Projo, 92" Stewart Firehawk, Pioneer Elite SC-65, PS3, RTi12 fronts, CSi5, FXi6 rears, RTi6 surround backs, RTi4 height, MFW-15 Subwoofer.
Car Setup: OEM Radio, RF 360.2v2, Polk SR6500 quad amped off 4 Xtant 1.1 100w mono amps, Xtant 6.1 to run an eD 13av.2, all Stinger wiring and Raammat deadener. -
SVS has like a 30 or 45 day return policy, no questions asked...
You just gotta pay for the shipping...
The majority of the owners never used this return policy no how...

Your so going in my signature man...- Not Tom ::::::: Any system can play Diana Krall. Only the best can play Limp Bizkit. -
if you don't mind paying 50 - 100 bucks in return shipping, HOwever, "IF" you decide to buy one, and your not stuck on having the "name brand" or audiophile subs, I do not think the first thought will be the return policy. I have heard One person not like the SVS, the rest of the nay sayers never heard one anyways Not the be all end all, i suppose for some... It is for me, though

I've never owned a sub from Polk or Velo, but from what I can gather from those who have, Velodyne makes better subs per dollar than Polk....which is pretty understandable since Velodyne specializes in subwoofers, and Polk has many other speaker types to deal with.
When you look at companies like HSU and SVS, who also specialize in subs, you have to figure that if they were selling through the same dealer chains as Polk and Velodyne, instead of consumer-direct, their products would be considerably more expensive. So aside from making some kick-**** subs, they are kick-**** values for the money.Polk LSi9 Mains, Polk LSIC Center, Polk RT25i Surrounds, Polk M3II Rear Surround, SVS PB10-ISD Sub, Denon AVR 2809 (as digital pre/pro only), Sony BDP-S350, Oppo DV-981HD, Cambridge Audio Azur 540C (CD), Marantz MM9000 5-ch amp, Outlaw ICBM, Panasonic th-42PX85u HDTV, Behringer BFD Pro, Monster Power HTS 2600 Conditioner -

Actaully that's the only name brand sub I've seen that's infrasonic. Guess it shows what I know:rolleyes:.
My best friend and I plan to build a sub so I haven't had to think about this. But sorry guys if I wanted to buy a name brand I think I would have to go with the SVS PB10. I've fallen to the dark side..."Nothing in this world is accomplished without passion."

I dont have the oppertunity to hear lots of brands available to you all but I have always thought quite highly of the PSW650 from polk, stays tight, very musical and can put out enough bass without having a hernia to keep up with most systems. Must be some of these 2nd hand going cheap......

on a practical note- i tried one of the entry level velodyne's, the VRP-1000. this 10 inch sub sounded good, but the auto-on function would not work for me, and there was no "on" setting to leave it always on. so though it sounded good, the sub would not turn on for me when listening to classical, jazz, or anything without a pounding bass line, unless i turned the volume up to 75% and then turned it back down. and velodyne was of no help in solving this problem, as it is a hardware problem. i had heard of this problem before, and had hoped it was not true.
so i got a PSW303, which is an 8 inch, and is rated with 50 less watts, and i am happy with it. and it turns on as soon as the music starts, and i have never had it distort, bottom out, or do anything other than sound good. -

Well I always liked the velodynes and I saw a great deal at jandr music world for a dps-10 , I wanted one of the refurbed units for $199.00 but they ran out and I was a bit angered so there was an open box return and I asked the salesman what was wrong with it and he replies that it was returned because the customer's wife said it was too big I asked how much it was and he said $219.00 and I jumped on it took it home and set it up and I like it alot ,but the placement was a bit tough to find a good spot but when I did I was amazed with the bass this thing puts out. So my advice is take your time and get what you like.:)My gear,

Congratulations Lou. I've always liked Velodyne subs for their musiciality. The ability to go down to 20hz means nothing to me. I live in a Condominium- and I didn't want a 2-note behmoth sub in my den. I only had two requirements- The thing needed to be able to go down to 30hz and play VERY accurately with music. I bought my 10 and never looked back.
