When I added my DAC I was convinced that the improvement was going to be minor and it would take days of listening to hear the changes, but I was wrong. The difference was instant and it was night and day. And the Nak was a $700 player.

I hear what your saying, but it still goes against my better instincts. I've been wrong before so it's possible I'm wrong now.

    Heiney9,

Just perusing this post, you come off sounding like an elitist snob. Intended or not, that's the impression that you give.

George's gear is anything but low-brow. I've heard both the Euphonic Tech (Magnavox) and the Rat Shack transport / AA combo. None of those were what I'd call 'budget' components. The Rat Shack, if memory serves was a 250 dollar player. To insinuate otherwise, is insulting.

this thread doesn't seem to be going anywhere anymore fast.

I guess i try not to make comments about gear I've never used or am familiar with. I can comment on the toshiba 3960, because i've owned one for a few months now. It's what it is.. a budget, no frills DVD/CD player. take it or leave it.

At $60, it's not going to sound like a Jolida, or Music Hall, Marantz or Denon. It is what it is.

I say.. unless you have one of these in your possesion right now... shut the F*CK UP!

    have a nice day! :p

Well it wasn't intended, and I believe I addressed the "budget" comment already. That word seems to have offended some people. I'm not an audio snob/elitist. My comments were really geared towards the Tosh 3960, which is a budget piece. Sorry if the meaning got lost. George already pointed your comments out to me.

You have to remember that back in the days when the RS came out $250 was pretty low budget for a CD player. The sound was great but much like the Toshiba, the build quality wasn't up to the sound quality which was being output.

Did I hear someone say the toshiba had been talked about in stereophile magazine? Those guys sure know their stuff when it comes right down to it. :)

I don't see the 3960 in the stores anymore. it must have been replaced by another model.

In last Sunday's paper Best Buy is advertising them on sale at $49.99 (reg. $69.99). I'm going to pick one up just so I can confirm my suspicion's about its audio quality.

I have had 3 different $50-$70 DVD players and the build and sound quality are marginal at best.

I run a "stock" 3950 on my patio system as CDP, works alright. Nothing to write home about, but for the 40 bucks I spent, it does the trick.

Just as a side note; I don't like its video quality. At all. My $99 Panny has a much better picture.

run, don't walk. here again.. i'm talking about the sound quality. not the build quailty of this player. Give it a fair test. use good quality IC's, speakers, amp, etc.

Troy, thanks for the words, and Heiney9's okay.

Max, Stereophile might like the 3960 (they like a lot now), but they hated the Rat Shack CD-3400, the RTA11t, and everything Bob Carver ever made. My how things have changed.

cmy330go, I see you live in that "metropolis" called Des Moines. I was out there about three years ago, and stayed in a hotel that's on the national historic register. I think it made it cause Lincoln slept there too. Anyhow, I ordered pancakes for breakfast the day we departed. NOBODY, not one person in that shithole hotel had any idea where to find the pancake syrup (which goes well with pancakes, but Des Moines hasn't broke the code on that yet). Remind me to stop in again. Knuckleheads.

Anonymouse, you'e damn right all this stuff for a grumpy old man who couldn't get the stuff he wanted out of a dvd player. I must've tried for all of 5 minutes. Anyhow, you can bet your **** that if YOU posted what I did, nobody would've responded, no hooplah, no nothing. Don't think too hard about why. It's cause nobody cares.
