SVS..which one(s)

Okay, I know there are alot of variables..

Room size..24'w x 14'd x 8'-10'h (vaulted)
50/50 Music / movies

Obviously price also dictates, but does not make the call..

I`m looking at ;
Only SVS...
Cylinder type....
PC-ultra..has built in amp
CS-ultra...outboard amp
CS-ultra x 2...same as above just x dos

Box type...
PB12-ISD/2
PB12-PLUS/2 in cherry

If the wife catches wind before I make a move...I`m a dead man !!

Cylinders will probably be easier to place, but I want the best all around sound for music and movies...so I`m not going to limit myself

If I can pull this off, I will probably be replacing my HT unit with a new Denon (?) for the pre outs..
I have 3 Rotels that need to be used somewhere...

Any thoughts..?!

Thanks guys...

If you can live with a cylinder sub, then that's typically the best bang for your buck. I own the 46-46PCi and love it.

It's not that cylinder are better, they're just more cost effective, and at a given price point should give you more for your money...

I'd go ahead and get the Ultra with the built in amp...

I'd get the 16-46 becuase it has the best low end extension out of the bunch, and you can always add another one down the road if you want greater spl. Most of your bass is above 20 hz and the 21-39 will work for all that, but they'll start making more and more music and movies with bass that trolls below 20 hz, Daredevil is the first thing that comes to mind. For that, you'll want to extra extension the 16-46 offers...

Send SVS an email or call them. They can give you great advice on their products.

Your room is fairly large. I would think that an PB12-PLUS/2 would be a better choice for the money. This unit is an exceptional value for the money.

I believe Polkmaniac meant the PC-Ultra unit. I have two of these. Depending on your listening habits (how loud you listen), you might want the extra output of the PB12-plus/2 over a single PCU. Just my $0.02. Let us know what SVS suggests.

I just got the single fastest response in history..

    Ron from SVS wrote me back and stated;

    Robert,

That’s a pretty big space there.

Unless you really WANT to mess with separates, I would go with a powered sub.

The PC-Ultra is what I’d get if you are OK with a death-defying $1,149.

If you want to live a little longer you can get most the performance of the Ultra at a far easier to swallow $825 with the 20-39PC-Plus. It’s got the guts to blow most $2,000 subs into the weeds.

You seem to have a Cherry wood thing going on so let me toss out two very near-term possibilities:

A PB12-Plus/2 in Cherry. Pre-orders started today and get you a $100 gift certificate good for t-shirts, cables, SPL meters… all the things you need to keep out of the dog house. Considering we’re talking about a sub that’s $1,400 to the DOOR, and still humble most subs in the $3-5K range, well it’s quite a package. When you see one you won’t care if your wife kills you.

Right around the corner is the single driver PB12-Plus in cherry at “only” $999. It’ll have lots of power, probably enough to make you happy, though clearly it’s not going to challenge its big dual woofer brother.

More about these on the News page.

There’s no real advantage in sound in the box or cylinder design. Each has it’s strengths.

    Ron Stimpson

I still would like you opinions though.....
I am sure any of these will be great , but ....

PB12+2 cherry would be my choice. It will give you everything you could need in both music and definately movies. For movies the twin driverrs will amaze you, there is more to movies LFE then most subs can give you and it will do so with ease. Music can be blent-in just as easy and will play well with any type of music you listen too and can be made as aggressive as you like and it will never complain one bit. Just be ready for the size it is large so I would suggest that you take the measurements and try to use something of that simular size and make sure you have a place for it that would be the only draw back but can be quickly overlooked once you fire it up.

    My 2 cents

    Thanks for your input Dave...

I was thinking that the twin drivers would hit much harder, so I e-mailed Ron back and asked if I was correct in thinking this...

These guys don`t mess around in responding, and I should have an answer soon...

They are on the East Coast, so I may have to wait till tomorrow to see what he has to say..

    JM and polkamaniac...
Thank you for your input also..

I was hoping someone with a "tube" type would have some insight on how they like it...

I`m leaning towards the PB12+2....in cherry of course,
but I am interested with the tube types because of placement possibilities...

I just don`t think they will hit the way I want..

    Got a response already !!

I asked if the "tube would hit like the box..

    Robert,

No way. The PC-Ultra is a marvel of packaging and can snuff $3,000 subs all day long using up a measly 16” diam space … but it is NOT going to outgun a PB12-Plus/2.

I have a PC-Ultra myself and have never found it wanting in depth or output, but in terms of price (it’s a solid $100 more even in textured black) size, weight (not all advantages of course) and performance the big PB is a step above the tricked out PC (don’t forget the PC-Ultra has PEQ too so it’s got a feature advantage for tweakers out there. I’m not one of them, don’t use it myself ;^).

    Ron

I know this post is about SVS, but if you want to get rid of those RT55's let me know. I think I want a pair of those in cherry.

I would love to hear any of those SVS subs, everyone here loves them and they are really priced right.

I think you'll have a good choice in any of them but for a good beating the box would be the way to go IMO, I still get a thrill from mine and now don't know what I would do if I didn't have it, it really does wonders for me when I'm enjoying a movie it just makes it that much more exciting. I'm 80% movies/ 20% music and for me it does everything I need and then some.

    Jimed1,
These 55i`s are in mint condition...they sound great !
If my wife doesn`t kill me in my sleep, I would like to put some LSI9`s in thier place...
only prob is I own almost the whole line of rti`s, and would have to get some 7`s to go with the 9`s !!!
my 38`s aren`t even broken in yet..!!
The 55`s are almost there, but haven`t been used much, except for HT.
Been using them more now that I have a tube pre though....

    Dave,
Sounds like Ron likes his CS-ultra...makes it hard to choose.
I know the box will be the one that hits hardest , but placement is a factor....
I just don`t want to spend that kind of $$ and not get the right one
either one will be a good choice...
    do you have the PB12 plus/2 ?

Do you want a box or a cylinder, it's pretty simple.

And if you get the gift certificate for SVS stuff, I wear an XL :)
CTC BBQ Amplifier, Sonic Frontiers Line3 Pre-Amplifier and Wadia 581 SACD player. Speakers? Always changing but for now, Mission Argonauts I picked up for $50 bucks, mint.

If you have a large room...

The PB2 + is the big choice.

Why? It will hit harder, hit the lower notes harder and louder...

In other words, when you need it most in movies, its gonna still be there.

I've seen the PC Ultra blow...

If you really wanna kick it up, go for the PB2 Ultra

....I'll go out on a limb here, and say you are close to reaching that point where the front room begins to look like a speaker test area.
    I'm there too.

WAF aside, I can not even imagine an average size room that would need more sub than a 20-39 PC+,
which is what I run in the theater which is 18'x14'x8'.
It will literally knock pictures off the wall.
I usually have it set at 10 o'clock position, (less than half way) and it's more than enough sub action, for any movie.
The PC+ is $825. so even with a good cable it's under $900. And it will take up way less space than a box, which will please the little lady.
But, if money is no object, go ahead and get the PC ultra.

the cylinder subs aren't exactly small either. although weight wise.. they are very light. I think mine weighs about 45 - 50 # is all. compare to what.. about 80 - 100+ for a box sub.

of course weight isn't the only factor. but if you move it around quite a bit.. then it is.

With SVS it just depends which you prefer. both box and cylinder subs are great. You'll be impressed with either one.

And that will work until you decide to upgrade the TV to widescreen.
It's always something, save your cash,
and marriage, the The 20-39 PC+ digs plenty deep, and punches harder for home theater.

As I stated, I have two PC-Ultra's. I have made comments here and here regarding these.

Ron has a PC-Ultra, not a CS-Ultra as you state. The PC and CS series are different beasts. The CS series requires external amps while the PC series are self powered. Make sure you realize the difference between the two series before you order.

You still have not mentioned at what level you listen to music/movies. If you listen at a louder levels, you may need the additional output of the PB12-Plus/2 for your room volume. Have you thought about two 20-39 PC+ subs for your room?

Your final choice will depend on your listening habits and budget.
