This is best overall for value, build quality, sound clarity, setup, etc.

My experience is quite old as I haven't bought a receiver for a few years but I've had; HK, Marantz, Sony and Onkyo. Here's how I'd rank'em...

    1. Marantz
    2. Onkyo
    3. Sony
    4. HK

In general Denon makes the finest sounding receivers on the market today. They always win the best recevier award year after year for a reason.

Denon isn' t for everyones speakers but they do support great sound quality for just about all speakers rated 6 ohms of more.

Dollar for dollar I don't think they can be touched. Features and connectability are always leading the pack.

Sound quality I feel is another story. Some receivers sound better powering speaker Brand A while Denon may sound better with Speaker Brand B.

So generally Denon is the best but may not be the best choice for the given system.

I'd add Rotel, B&K, Sunfire, and NAD to that list.

While this is certainly subjunctive in nature, I thought it be something interesting to do. I've only owned one receiver (outside of my _alright_ Samsung HTiB :o:confused: ) and that's my HK. I loved the quality and was able to get a great deal online for my 235. For the record Denon was the only receiver brand I liked besides HK but it wasn't exactly what I wanted. I thought its sound quality (while no less phenomenal than HK's) was too mellow and out there. I prefere crisp, powerful sounds (and I don't mean edgy/harsh, either).

Hey its only for my bedroom so... ultra high end would be a waste: I'll stick with one of the moderate models of HK's "really high end" equipment. And I'll love it.

Course I'm sure others' experiances are similar.

    PS
I did not intentially put Harman Kardon as the first poll. Sorry for that little bit of subtle, if accidental, bias.

I'm pretty surprised there have been 32 votes and none for Pioneer and Sony. I like the tone of H/K but not the imaging, and they've consistently proven to be quirky/buggy.

How is Sony going to get votes unless you call it Sony ES??
CTC BBQ Amplifier, Sonic Frontiers Line3 Pre-Amplifier and Wadia 581 SACD player. Speakers? Always changing but for now, Mission Argonauts I picked up for $50 bucks, mint.

Sucinct. Wonderful analysis- I'm sure someone will find help.

HK's can truely be daunting to set up (even with their moderately user friendly "EasySet" systems). Luckily, my best freined owned the previous model year of my receiver:D;)

And yes, I probably should have said "favorites game" when I said "subjunctive".

Denon's currently leading the pack... keep voting

I've been an Onkyo fan my whole life, as are most people I know. I think everyone in my family and circle of friends owns Onkyo for their HT systems. Overall, for sound quality and price, Onkyo is the best mass market consumer product. I've heard Denon, HK and Onkyo on my speakers, and I always preferred Onkyo, expecially given Onks are the cheapesst of the three. I think HK's are overpriced, as are Denons, and HKs are too complicated to set up. Granted, those of us initiated don't have too much trouble, but to a lot of people the HK is too complicated.

That said, now that I've entered the realm of "high end" with my B&K, I'll never go back. Even with the Rti series speakers, music and movies are leagues beyond what any of the brands on the poll can do. My Rti 10's coupled with the PB 10 ISD for music sound wonderful, so much clarity and presence. For movies, there is no comparison. Surround effects are clear and the sheer power of this thing is awesome. Return of the King sounds better than ever. B&K, however, is not geared toward the mass consumer, and to really do it justice, I should probably at least have the LSi series, if not something even better, but I can't afford to step up in speakers right now, and I'm very happy with my current setup.

I've got the better of both worlds. my HK AVR85 is good and my Oink TX-SV727 is good. Take your pick. The HK has the digital inputs.
